Cyclonic Rift

Overload Design Choices

New 19 Aug 2023 Asked by uhhuh-waitwhat 35 Comments

Looking at cards like Supreme Verdict in the same set, why did Cyclonic Rift (and maybe some other Overload spells in RTR) not have an overload with two colors? Maybe (4)(R)(U)(U)? Was Commander in mind? Did the color pie trump flavor? Limited? Maybe something else?

We were just trying to execute the simplest version for the mechanic’s first outing.

Anti-Bounce in Commander

New 05 Mar 2023 Asked by sjtsquid 43 Comments

I'm guessing that a lot of the anti-bounce questions are commander players looking for counterplay to Cyclonic Rift.

White gets anti-bounce in phasing, for what it's worth.

Blue also gets phasing.

Attractions and Bounce Effects

New 10 Oct 2022 Asked by morjoko-blog 18 Comments

Was there any consideration given to attractions returning to the bottom or shuffled into the attraction deck when they would be returned to hand? Its a little disheartening to think about my attractions EDH deck getting wrecked super hard by Cyclonic Rift or other bounce effects

There are play design concerns for doing that. Also, if you play all of the Attractions, you should seldom run out of Attractions to draw.

Cyclonic Rift Counter Strategies

New 09 Nov 2020 Asked by myfavoriteflavorisblue 64 Comments

FYI to the people asking for non blue answers to cyclonic rift. Teferi's Protection will let you dodge it and Ashaya, Soul of the Wild turns your guys into lands that cyc rift won't see. Hope it helps!

Card Preventing Battlefield Return

New 07 Nov 2020 Asked by k0olmini 42 Comments

Mark if or when a card that says “cards and effects your opponents control cannot cause permanents to return from the battlefield to your hand”? (I hate Cyclonic Rift)

It’s a big if. It’s a very hard rule to write that works properly, but doesn’t cause other problems.

Red-Green Bounce Resistance

New 13 Jun 2020 Asked by exclusionmage 55 Comments

Can red or green get some creatures that prevent themselves from being bounced by enemy effects? It gets really annoying when even the hate cards with pro-blue can be hit by cyclonic rift.

Untargeted bounce is hard to protect against. There’s not easy words to use, templatewise.

Blue's Board Wipe

New 04 Nov 2019 Asked by animatedscreenshots 28 Comments

Do you think Blue gettting mass bounce (such as Cyclonic Rift and Awoken Horror) might be a bit too efficient of a board-wipe for blue?

Individual cards might be too aggressively costed, but the ability is fine for blue.

Comparing Removal Efficacy

New 27 Oct 2019 Asked by rekian 49 Comments

In a world where ETB habilities are all over the place, counterspells are much better than spot removal. In addition, blue has arguably the best boardwipe in multiplayer (Cyclonic Rift) and black has probably better creature removal: demon or non-demon one, Decree or Pain, Black Sun's Zenith... There's little white can do to stop Necropotence giving a full new hand etc. You can't be consistent if you deal with threats but don't have the means to refill your hand and put some of your own.

Your example is the best enchantment and one of the best cards of all time? Yeah, it’s hard for most colors to deal with Necropotence. It’s why we had the broken Necro Summer. Note that counterspells are reactive meaning you need the card and mana at the exact moment Necro is cast. That’s a big limitation.

White vs Blue Abilities

New 03 Feb 2019 Asked by lastnobody 59 Comments

To the white vs blue debate: I can understand your point (or I try at least), but there are just a few things I'd point out: White can't deal with instants or sorceries except for silence or nevermore effects so it cant deal with everything. Blue on the on the other hand can deal with any spell and even abilities if it meets the timing (Counterspells) and even deal with it later by bouncing or stealing it. Cyclonic rift is even considered one of the best wipes in commander.

Ways white can deal with spells:- proactively stop them from being cast- fizzle the spell by making the target illegal (with things like protection)- prevent damage from a spell- bring back things destroyed by the spell It’s fine to say blue is better at it than white (and it is as counterspell it is one of blue’s greatest strengths), but blanket dismissals don’t help your argument. Also, it’s odd to say white can’t do something except a few examples that do it well and then say blue can do mass removal when it’s also just a handful of spells in blue that actually do that.

Utilizing Phasing Mechanic

New 22 Jul 2018 Asked by cadito-7 30 Comments

What stops the ubiquity of phasing in supplemental sets like a commander product? If enfranchised players can get it, why not have it? It stops things like cyclonic rift and board wipes if you could a targeted phase out spell like Reality Ripple for a target permanent.

I would use end of turn flickering before phasing.

Promises in Gameplay

New 24 Jan 2017 Asked by piogre 32 Comments

What happens if a player can't abide by a Frankie Peanuts answer? For example, if I ask a player if he will attack with a least one creature this turn, he says yes, and I then resolve Cyclonic Rift so he has no creatures that can attack?

You do the best you can to live up to the promises you’ve made. If something stops you from meeting a promise then you are free from having to meet it.

Color Weakness Discussion

New 22 Nov 2016 Asked by kianhorn 51 Comments

As a commander player, I sometimes feel like certain spells are unfair since there is hardly any way to respond to them in my combination of colours. An example is Cyclonic Rift and other "bounce" spells. Would it be outside of non-blue's realm nowadays to have ways to counteract these effects?

Colors are supposed to have weaknesses they have trouble addressing.

Alternate Costs with Garfield

New 15 Jun 2015 Asked by animar37-blog-blog 10 Comments

Can I pay alternate costs while casting spells as another spell with Richard Garfield, Ph.D. in play, for example exiling a Mise an paying 1 life to cast another Richard Garfield, Ph.D. as Force of will or paying 6U to cast Disperse as overloaded Cyclonic Rift?

You can as long as the card’s mana cost exactly matches the card you’re using.

Mana Leak Overload

New 23 May 2015 Asked by pjweisberg 13 Comments

The real question is: if I use Richard Garfield, Ph.D to play Mana Leak as Cyclonic Rift, does that count as paying an alternate cost? If it does, then you can't pay Cyclonic Rift's alternate cost. If it doesn't, you should be able to overload.

You can cast it but if you want to overload it you have to pay the overload cost.

Overload Costs Debate

New 23 May 2015 Asked by reiversmusings 26 Comments

I'm disputing your un ruling! Intent to pay alternate casting costs is after the spell is announced. You announce the mana leak naming cyclonic rift, and then declare your intention to pay the overload cost since rift has an overload cost!

Richard Garfield Ph.D. Is turning cards into cards that share the base mana cost. That is what it does.EDIT: I’m catching my mistake. I thought the mana costs matched only after you paid the overload cost. If the base mana are the same, you can cast a spell as that and then pay whatever additional costs you like just as if it was that spell.

Un-rules Clarification

New 23 May 2015 Asked by wurtwurtwut 13 Comments

I was wondering I could play my Mana Leak as an overloaded Cyclonic Rift with Richard Garfield, Ph.D. in play, so I went to the Gather Page. Can you get Un-rules added/errata added there? (and also help with my un-question?)

No, you have to play spells with Richard Garfield, Ph.D. as cards that share the original mana cost.

Protection Mechanic Quirk

New 30 Aug 2013 Asked by lostalone87 11 Comments

Do you think it's fair that 'Protection from' only stops red sweepers from working? It won't stop guys from dying to White sweepers or Black sweepers, getting bounced by Upheaval or Cyclonic Rift and even murdered by Whirlwind type effects. But Protection will stop every red sweeper going. Why is that the case?

It’s just how protection works.
