Favorite Guild Mechanics

What are your favourite guild mechanics for each guild of Ravnica? Do you think they're also the ones most likely to be brought back?

Bloodthirst Storm Scale

New 27 Jun 2023 Asked by ferrous-pluton 22 Comments

Hey quick question but is Bloodthirst still a 3 on the storm scale? It just feels odd that it has such a low score despite the last time it was used was back in Magic 2012. I remember really liking it back in the day and I wish it got used more.

Being low on the Storm Scale means there are few obstacles to it getting reused in a premier set, but someone still has to choose to do it.

Absence of Bloodthirst in VOW

New 31 Oct 2021 Asked by a-deg 32 Comments

Was bloodthirst ever discussed as a returning mechanic in VOW?

We talked about it during the Vampire brainstorming meeting, but Blood tokens were the Vampire mechanic pretty early, so it never really had a slot.

Preference of Lifegain for Colors

New 07 Oct 2020 Asked by thesoundofdrumming-blog-blog 83 Comments

Why are nearly all lifegain payoffs in white or black, and never green? Isn't green the color of life? Why should the color of death get things like Bloodthirsty Aerialist and not green?

Maybe we’re just saving something cool for green to do in the future.

Guilds and Mechanics

Could a guild get a different guilds mechanic in a return? Like how bloodthirst was put into black.

Possible, but unlikely.

Riot and Spectacle Origins

New 30 Dec 2018 Asked by deg99 46 Comments

Was there any point where Riot was considered for Rackdos and Spectacle was considered for Gruel? That combination would have felt reminiscent of their previous mechanics Bloodthirst and Unleash.

The precursor to Spectacle started as a Gruul mechanic. I’ll tell the whole tale in my preview columns.

Ravnica Mechanics Approach

New 21 Dec 2018 Asked by jhoald 48 Comments

We've now seen all 5 mechanics and none of them are entirely new. A Bloodthirst, Monstrous, and Unleash variant. Keywording the text on cards like doomed traveller and careful consideration (and many other cards for each of them). Ravnica had always been the plane where crazy mechanics were tried out: Cipher, Extort, Detain, Haunt, and Transmute just to name a few. What caused such a safe and familiar approach this time? It makes the set feel more like a core set than a new and exciting one.

Ravnica is more about the innovations of the guilds than of the guild mechanics. A set with five mechanics forces us to keep the mechanics simple.

Mechanic Naming Rules

New 12 Nov 2018 Asked by bcrossfire 24 Comments

"You can’t do Mechanic X because X has to be defined. You have to do Mechanic [number]." Well, Fumiko, the Lowblood has an effect that grants Bushido X, Petrified Wood-Kin has Bloodthirst X, and Thromok the Insatiable has Devour X.

My answer was talking about keywords nameable by Unstable’s Modular Monstrosity.

Guild Mechanics Recycled

New 07 Oct 2018 Asked by flyonadog 50 Comments

Mark I know we’ve seen bloodthirst move away from the Gruul and have some vampires get it, and convoke was a core set mechanic, so how likely are we generally to see guild mechanics recycled in other places, spreading to other colors, and how often is it tied to flavor?

Any guild mechanic can return in a non-Ravnica set and expand to new colors.

Core Sets' Mechanics

New 22 Jun 2018 Asked by elmdormesdoram 37 Comments

My favorite things about Core Sets 20XX were the returning mechanics and I'm super sad to see that they're not coming back. It was a great way to print cards that were out of theme on the first appearance of a mechanic (like exalted outside of Bant, for example, or bloodthirst outside of Gruul).

The choice to lean towards new players in core sets made us decide we didn’t want extra vocabulary.

Bloodthirst's Future

New 25 Jun 2017 Asked by alexandru-pop 34 Comments

Hi Mark! I started really getting into Magic around the time Ravnica came out in 2005. Gruul was my favorite guild because I liked big creatures and dealing a lot of damage (I was a typical timmy). I really liked bloodthirst, and I was happy to see it return in M12. Do you think it's a deep-enough (and well liked enough) mechanic that we'll see it again?

I do. Blood thirst is a solid and popular mechanic. I have no doubt it will be back.

Bloodthirst vs Unleash

New 03 May 2016 Asked by csick3108-deactivated20201213 37 Comments

In your Storm Scale article, you said bloodthirst has large design space, while unleash only has medium design space, but both designs, you said, can go on any creature. Why the difference?

Bloodthirst is usable on more creatures. Unleash works best on small creatures because the delta of a +1/+1 counter matters more.

Reusing Guild Mechanics

New 07 Jan 2015 Asked by zanmor 25 Comments

Can guild (or clan or shard) mechanics show up again in absence of the guild if it makes sense? Like Evolve (sub in a more appropriate one if you prefer) in mono green or even green/red if the creative made it work?

Bloodthirst is a guild mechanic that already came back as not a guild mechanic. It’s something that will happen more and more.

Simplifying Mechanics

New 31 Aug 2014 Asked by love-ashually 28 Comments

I notice Outlast and Prowess are both always +1/+1, while they could have been variable like Bushido or Bloodthirst. Was this a deliberate choice to rein in complexity?

When +1/+1 gets the job done, there’s no need to add unnecessary complexity.

Mechanic Reintroduction

New 27 Aug 2014 Asked by liampk 32 Comments

When the idea of eliminating the core set came up, did anyone bring up that Wizards was losing the only mechanical and flavor neutral product to reintroduce old mechanics? It seems unlikely that mechanics like Bloodthirst, Exalted or Convoke (all of which were faction specific on their first printing) would be brought back to standard in a block set on a particular plane, due to conflicting flavor or mechanics of that block

Each of your examples is something flavor neutral enough that I could easily see it come back in another block. There are more flavor-specific ones, like ninjutsu, but we could choose to rename it and bring it back.

Core Set Mechanic Coincidence

New 30 May 2014 Asked by bluelotus0-blog 15 Comments

Is it coincidence or intentional that so far every core set returning mechanic has been in black? (M11 and scry with Viscera Seer, M12 and bloodthirst with Bloodrage Vampire and friends, M13 and exalted with Knight of Infamy and friends, and M14 and slivers with Syphon Sliver.)

It’s not some master conspiracy. : )
