Bitterblossom Reprint Potential

New 04 Jan 2024 Asked by forgotten1vy 25 Comments

Hey Mark, Is there any possibility of a Bitterblossom reprint in standard later down the line now that we have switched to the kindred type? Its my favorite card and I’d love to be able to use it again in standard and pioneer

While there are potentials for reprints, I’m highly skeptical it will happen in Standard, both because of the power level of the card and that we don’t plan to do much new with Kindred.

Tribal vs Typal

New 13 Jul 2023 Asked by you-are-talking-about-this 46 Comments

If something like Bitterblossom was to be reprinted would it still say “tribal” or be updated to say “typal”?

The word “typal” isn’t being used to replace the card type Tribal but the use of the word “tribal” to mean “cares about one or more creature types”. And again, this an internal vocabulary change for R&D. It’s not being reflected on cards, as we don’t use that vocabulary in rules text. It will appear only in articles, podcasts, and blog posts by Wizards employees (mostly me).

Since Skrelv's Hive is monowhite, could Bitterblossom have been monowhite?

In the right set that justifies the life loss.

Podcast Feedback Request

DTW #988 Designing for an Eternal World (Belated Feedback)Hi Mark,I have been listening somewhat regularly since the pandemic, but I'm not all the way through your back catalog yet. Episode #988 was one of my favorites in recent memory, and I would love to hear more like this.It was interesting to hear about big-picture challenges across eternal formats. I particularly enjoyed the short discussion on R&D power-level mistakes. Your thoughts on mistakes put a lot of things into perspective for me as someone that was pulled back into the game from my earlier casual high school days to get hooked for life and play pretty seriously for several years because of a design mistake (Bitterblossom). It must be difficult to be on the design side of things regretting putting out a mistakenly overpowered card that suddenly has legions of loving fans because of its power level. I can see why you would not have any desire to further support strategies built around such problematic cards.Although, as someone who has cherished memories of using such a card, I wanted to say that my experience with that deck has kept me hooked on Magic. Not only that, but my whole group of friends has been hooked due to this period years back where we all enjoyed the game so much that we lived and breathed Magic as we played competitive standard religiously. Also, even though I certainly had the advantage with u/b faeries in standard, some of the most fun I had with that deck was actually playing at a disadvantage in Modern because scraping together any wins was always that much more rewarding.(P.S. I really enjoyed #988, but may I request you throughout an ask for people's top ten favorite DTWs )Thank you

Okay, two questions: 1) What are people’s favorite “Drive to Work” episodes? Why?2) What topics have I not done would you like me to do an episode of the podcast on?

Storm Scale Rating

New 10 Jul 2022 Asked by fancysaucefaerie 35 Comments

On the storm scale: With the wide scale access to efficient enchantment removal in standard/pioneer where would you rate the reprint of bitterblossom and spellstutter sprite?

Good removal is not a justification to print broken cards.

Lorwynand/Shadowmoor Return Likelihood

New 03 Mar 2020 Asked by aztyn-games 47 Comments

What is the likely hood of returning to lorwyn/shadowmoor? Also the possibility of bitterblossom in standard?

The former is more likely than the latter, although both have an uphill battle.

Token Value in Premium Products

New 26 Nov 2019 Asked by patjamma 67 Comments

Why do tokens count as real magic cards in terms of card count for a premium product? I'm very disappointed in Bitterblossom Dreams. One real card for a premium price. I get that the tokens were also drawn by the guest artist, but why 4 tokens? Why are tokens what WotC expects players to pay for in this premium product?

The reason we’re spelling everything out is so the players can decide if the product is right for them. If no one buys that Secret Lair box, it will inform future decisions.

Planeswalkers Artwork

New 24 Jul 2019 Asked by jspencer91 31 Comments

Just a thought - but if Planeswalkers are only going to have regular and borderless versions, then one of the examples of extended art cards shouldn’t have been a Planeswalker

The only one I showed at the panel was Bitterblossom.

Bitterblossom Frame Return

New 22 Jul 2019 Asked by aaronlovesmtg 40 Comments

With Bitterblossom getting a new frame does that mean the return of Tribal?

I was just using Bitterblosdom as an example as the boxtoppers from Ultimate Masters were extended art. It’s not appearing in Throne of Eldraine.

Pop Culture References

New 13 Sep 2018 Asked by sukusuku-hakutaku 67 Comments

MtG pop culture reference. Someone already told you about the anime/light novel Accel World having references, but it goes further than that. One of the official manga, Accel World / Dural Magisa Garden, has chapters blatantly named after cards, like Bitterblossom; Ach! Hans, Run!; and Absolutely Removed from the Freaking Game Forever.

Interesting.

Bitterblossom Trivia

Hi Mark! It's my birthday today! (and I remembered to ask something!) I was wondering if you had any trivia about my favourite card: Bitterblossom?

My inspiration for Bitterblosfom was Phyrexian Arena. Happy Birthday!

Tribal Cards Return

New 12 Nov 2017 Asked by boom-de-yaadaa 25 Comments

Can I request the return of Tribal cards, but more in a way of "Bitterblossom" (a unique card where the tribal-ness is an occasional boon) rather than "Tarfire" (where the whole point of the card is the tribal-ness, as otherwise it's just a worse version of an existing card). I think the way it was done in Rise of the Eldrazi is one of the best ways to handle Tribal cards.

The problem is you have to be all-in. If spells have a Goblin-ness to them, you can’t pick and choose, all spells that clearly show Goblin flavor have to get marked otherwise you create dissatisfaction that some cards have the marker and some don’t. That was the biggest problem.

Tribal Creature Dynamics

New 05 Mar 2017 Asked by grubbycrookedquestion 52 Comments

If a Tribal becomes a Creature (in addition to its other types, e.g. using Opalescence) will it still have the same creature types, and will it still be a Tribal?

If a Bitterblossom gets turned into a creature, I am pretty sure it’s still a Faerie.

Tribal's Reprints

New 25 Jun 2016 Asked by spartann30 26 Comments

So since tribal as a super type is now abandoned, does that mean we will only see cards like bogart shenanigans and bitterblossom is suplemental sets like modern masters, commander, FTV, Ect.?

Basically yes. We’re not reprinting cards in Standard-legal sets with the Tribal card type. We could make near equivalents with new names.

Goblin Assault Trivia

Wow! I wasn't expecting a reply that fast. Thanks for the prompt response. Also, my birthday question got missed two days ago. Could I get some trivia on Goblin Assault?

Goblin Assault was my take on a Red version of Bitterblossom.Happy Belated Birthday!

Favorite Cards Trivia

New 02 Aug 2015 Asked by twi-wtf 24 Comments

Hey Maro, can I have some birthday trivia on either of my favorite two cards, Bitterblossom or Avacyn, Angel of Hope?

When I made Bitterblossom, I was inspired by the card Phyrexian Arena. The Tribal - Faerie was an afterthought when I realized it made Faerie tokens. Happy Birthday!

Faeries Without Flash

New 27 Jul 2015 Asked by tsabotavoc 31 Comments

Hey mark, it was my birthday at the weekend, thanks for putting a bitterblossom and foil cryptic command in that modern masters booster I opened! To celebrate, could I have some trivia on bitterblossom or lorwyns faeries in general?

You’re welcome for the cool cards. : ) Originally all faeries in Lorwyn block were going to have flash, even the Black ones, but it proved to be poor gameplay, so we took it off the Black ones and some of the Blue ones. Happy Birthday!

Bitterblossom Standard Chances

Is there a possibility Bitterblossom could be in standard again?

For numerous different reasons, I am doubtful. Still not a developer.

Card Design Credits

Did you design Bitterblossom and/or Deathrite Shaman?

Bitterblossom: Yes Deathrite Shaman: I had a hand in its design but was not the sole designer.

Tribal Keyword Use

New 22 Jun 2014 Asked by snowmancer 17 Comments

Since Magic isn't likely going to have Tribal keyword from now on, I feel a bit bad that I probably wouldn't see any more noncreature cards with creature types as well. I think noncreature permanents having "creature type" (such as Bitterblossom) with some interactions here and there through formats they belong in was pretty neat.

The problem is it leads to a slippery slope where lots of cards are marked with extra words and they don’t matter the vast majority of the time.
