Fixing Beast Within and Chaos Warp

How would you fix Beast Within and Chaos Warp?

Not print them.

Reprinting Certain Cards

New 25 Apr 2024 Asked by jjustin1379 37 Comments

Do you think cards like beast within, pongify, rapid hybridization and harmonize should get reprinted in commander precons? Beast within is a staple and the blue removal spells are very strong and actually are not that cheap for nonrares. Should they continue to appear in commander decks since they are already in the format or would you prefer other cards?

If a card is already in the format and there is demand for it, we’ll include it in Commander decks. I personally don’t enjoy color pie breaks being major players, but that ship has long since sailed.

Battles Mechanics Explained

New 22 Apr 2023 Asked by pyrogaynia 61 Comments

The wording of defeating a battle vs destroying caused some confusion at prerelease weekend. If I cast Atraxa's Fall or Beast Within targeting a siege, does the battle transform or does it go to the graveyard?

The last counter has to be removed from a battle for you to cast the back face, so destroying a battle won’t get you the spell.

Beast Within Analysis

Would you classify "Beast Within" a color break? It's ubiquitous in Commander and I'd like to hear what you think about this.

It is a color pie break.

Beast Whisperer Attribute

New 20 Feb 2023 Asked by honor-basquiat 22 Comments

"So, I did misread this as Beast Within. Beast Whisperer would now be green/blue. It’s no longer in one color, but is now a multicolor effect." Why can't mono blue do Beast Whisperer (might need different flavor but mechanically it seems like it's very mono blue)?

Caring specifically about creatures isn’t very blue.

Beast Whisperer Color Change

New 20 Feb 2023 Asked by forestd3w 34 Comments

I remember you saying that green's draw is tied to it's creature, so how does Beast Wisperer makes it a color break? And why is it white, when it doesn't have a cap of the creature's power and cards drawn per turn?

I mistakenly read the question as asking about Beast Within. Beast Whisperer is no longer monogreen (it’s now green/blue) as we’ve been cutting back how easy it is for green to draw cards. We want it to be doing things more in green’s strategy, so it’s more about playing one big creature than a lot of little ones.

Beast Whisperer Colors

New 19 Feb 2023 Asked by honor-basquiat 73 Comments

Is Beast Whisper out of color pie for green now? If so and the card was designed today, which color would get it? Blue?

It was out of pie when it was printed, and continues to this day. It’s mostly a white effect.EDIT: So, I did misread this as Beast Within. Beast Whisperer would now be green/blue. It’s no longer in one color, but is now a multicolor effect.

Secret Lair Card Texts Issue

New 16 Oct 2021 Asked by boymeetsanime 22 Comments

Hi Mark! Not so much a question but an observation. The new Secret Lair Beast Within card feels a little off as the first line of rules text now reads "Its controller creates a 3/3 green Beast creature token" before the text that names a target. I'm aware that 99.99% of the time it won't be an issue as its an aesthetic upgrade aimed towards enfranchised players but it feels a little anti-magic considering how text order/syntax can sometimes make the difference between a card resolves or not.

Not my area, but my guess is it was updated to the current version of the template.

Banning Colour Pie Breaks

New 02 Jun 2021 Asked by shadesofpink 63 Comments

Is it possible to ban colour pie breaks (such as Beast Within and Song of the Dryads) in eternal formats? You've said that your mistakes will live forever, but you could always just ban the cards and end these issues.

I believe I would be getting a lot of angry letters if we did that.

Green's Removal Capabilities

New 31 May 2021 Asked by growingthreat 86 Comments

You seem to be under the impression that green has some kind of issue with non-creature based removal, but you printed Beast Within, Lignify, and Song of the Dryads in monogreen, and 2 of those are some of the best commander removal in the game for difficult-to-handle Commanders.

All three of those cards are color pie breaks that never should have been printed in green. That’s one of the biggest challenges of eternal formats - mistakes live forever.

Blue's Transformation Ability

New 03 Dec 2020 Asked by evscfa1 44 Comments

Could Beast Within/Generous Gift be in blue? It technically fills blue's ability to destroy something and give the controller a creature in place of it

Blue can transform creatures into other creatures.

Generous Gift Exception

New 17 Jan 2020 Asked by presidentark 27 Comments

"No, white doesn’t get “destroy target land”." White got a colorshifted Beast Within in Modern Horizons, Generous Gift, which is single-target land destruction.

That was a bend for that very reason. It was a color-shifter card that very rarely gets used for land destruction, so the Council of Colors allowed the bend for that particular card.

Beast Within Discussion

New 16 Nov 2019 Asked by connor-beyond 39 Comments

"Beast Within" is monocolor and has Destroy target permanent (in green, no less). Were you meaning an ability that exclusively says just "Destroy target permanent" without other effects?

I meant within the color pie. Beast Within is a color pie break meaning we shouldn’t have made it. Also, I mean just the ability “destroy target permanent” with no additional text.

Green's Limitations

New 31 Oct 2019 Asked by astralmyth 28 Comments

Let's say beast within was exactly the same, but gave the opponent a 5/5 instead. Would that be okay?

No. The issue isn’t what you’re giving your opponent. It’s what green should and shouldn’t be able to do

Beast Within Discussion

New 31 Oct 2019 Asked by centurosplaneswalker 44 Comments

Technically Beast Within can be undone, by Black, Green, and sometimes White, without even removing your 3/3. "It's an aura" is a weird justification when the alternative is a graveyard with more holes than the one on Theros.

Yeah, I’m leaning towards the Transfornation being a break in green.

Creature Removal Debate

New 31 Oct 2019 Asked by centurosplaneswalker 46 Comments

What makes Beast Within Not Okay for dealing with creatures, but Kenrith's Transformation Just Fine?

There was much argument about whether it was okay. The fact is could be undone was what let us allow it as a severe bend but not a break.

Rule Bends

New 20 Sep 2019 Asked by adamjford 40 Comments

Why is Beast Within a break but Kenrith's Transformation only a bend?

It can’t be undone. Note that Kenrith’s Transfornation is a pretty big bend.

Card Selection Criteria

New 08 Aug 2019 Asked by dornith2 46 Comments

Earlier you said if there's a choice between two similar cards, you choose the one that's in color pie. So why does the Naya Populate deck have Beast Within instead of Generous Gift? They're identical cards, both in-color for the deck, and the later was specifically made because the former was out of pie.

I said we “usually”. There are exceptions.

Color Pie Bends

New 25 May 2019 Asked by gridnack 34 Comments

Green has deathtouch but can’t kill creatures in color pie? If Beast Within is a break, and Generous Gift is the solution, why make any one color have to bend or break? Isn’t a neater solution to resolve bends/breaks by creating a multicolored card?

Bends are acceptable. We have to be careful with how many bends we’re making and how we’re using the bend, but it’s a tool available to us. A break is never supposed to happen. Whenever we accidentally do it, it’s a mistake.

Generous Gift Discussion

New 25 May 2019 Asked by gophilipbowles 81 Comments

At least to me, Generous Gift feels less natural than Beast Within. Targeted land destruction may not be a break in white in the sense that it doesn't undercut a core white weakness, but green killing creatures directly has more precedent even if it's considered a break in the modern colour pie; nor is gifting creatures very white. The flavour, fun as it is, of white getting land destruction because an elephant squashes it flat seems a case of stretching flavour to justify an off-colour ability.

Green was never supposed to be able to kill creatures in the color pie. I had a drag out fight over Dessert Twister in Fifth Edition twenty plus years ago (which I lost because there wasn’t a good replacement, but they claimed wasn’t a precedent). And white giving people things in exchange for destroying something has been in White’s color pie since the beginning. So yes, Generous Gift is and has always been more in color pie than it’s green version .
