Green's Removal Capabilities

New 31 May 2021 Asked by growingthreat 86 Comments

You seem to be under the impression that green has some kind of issue with non-creature based removal, but you printed Beast Within, Lignify, and Song of the Dryads in monogreen, and 2 of those are some of the best commander removal in the game for difficult-to-handle Commanders.

All three of those cards are color pie breaks that never should have been printed in green. That’s one of the biggest challenges of eternal formats - mistakes live forever.

Kenrith's Transformation Controversy

New 10 Oct 2020 Asked by anonleoleo 30 Comments

I'm personally unconvinced that Kenrith's Transformation is a severe bend. Does that mean Lignify is just a severe bend now?

No, turning something into a 3/3 is different than making it a 0/4. Also, Kenrith’s Transfirnation was only allowed for its importance to the story. It was just enough to barely get it across the line. It’s possible it was a break. It’s really close,

Lignify's Status in Green

Does Kenrith's Transformation mean that Lignify is back in green's color pie?

No. That was a very major bend for story reasons.

Green's Pacifism Break

New 04 Mar 2019 Asked by enker-x 30 Comments

Hey Mark, you said earlier that Lignify is a break in green, does this extend to Utopia Vow also, since it can act somewhat like a pacify? (I'm not sure if this card is a result of it being from planar chaos or not)

Green does not get Pacifism.

Green's Creature Handling

New 01 Mar 2019 Asked by ultwarrior 28 Comments

In your Lorwyn podcasts recently you've called Lignify a break in green. Would it still be a break if it made the creature something bigger than a 0/4, so you still gave your opponent a threat you had to use your own creatures to deal with? I guess like a Beast Within but only affecting creatures--is that okay in mono-green?

Green can change the stats of its own creatures but not the opponent’s. Lignify ubdermines green’s weakness. A good shorthand is “green should have trouble dealing with creatures in a deck without creatures”.

Color Pie Adjustments

I’d beast within is a break, does that make lignify a bend, or does the flavor make up for what is effectively creature removal?

Both breaks.

Color Weakness Philosophy

New 17 Apr 2017 Asked by bolas-our-lord-and-savior-deact 68 Comments

In my opinion lignify and song of the dryads are a green way to solve greens weaknesses. I'm personally an advocate for letting colors shore up their weaknesses if they do it in a way that is flavorful to their color.

Letting colors “shore up their weaknesses” is removing their weaknesses. It’s bad for the game for colors not to have weaknesses.

Color Identity Discussion

New 05 Mar 2017 Asked by gophilipbowles 42 Comments

Imprisoned in the moon actually is a colour-shifted version of a green card, Song of the Dryads from a recent Commander product. How is it that this card is considered in-colour if Lignify (which I presume inspired it) is now a break?

Green likes things as they are.Blue likes to transform things into what it wants them to be.Thus, artificial transformation is blue not green.Red, as part of its flavor of chaos, changes either temporarily or “randomly” (aka in a means it can’t control).

Lignify's Color Pie Status

New 05 Mar 2017 Asked by umlautsurstromming 43 Comments

You said, "One of green’s biggest weakness is being unable to kill creatures without using its own creatures to do so. A creatureless green deck should be unable to answer troublesome creatures. Arachnid Web does exactly that and thus is a pretty major break." — What about Lignify, which turns a troublesome creature into a harmless one? If that's okay, could Imprisoned in the Moon be color-shifted into green?

Regular readers know I also consider Lignify a color pie break for green.

Green's Removal Limits

New 29 Jul 2015 Asked by overflowchute 28 Comments

so on the topic of green not getting pacifism: stuff like lignify (turns them into a 0/4 treefolk) and utopia vow and that commander one that turns them into a forest are out of color pie too, right? what about snakeform?

Yes, those are all out of color pie. If Green doesn’t have creatures in play, it is not suppose to have answers to creatures (okay, save fliers and artifact creatures).

Could I ask you to sign Lignify, Hornet Sting, Beast Within, Chaos Warp, and Song of the Dryads... AND write little snide comments on them? : )

I’m always happy to write snide comments. You have to remember to remind me to do so.

If I sent you a Chaos Warp, Beast Within, Song of the Dryads, Lignify, and Hornet Sting, would you sign them? How would you react?

I’ll sign any Magic cards. And yes, I’ve signed many copies of the ones you’ve listed.

Flavor vs Philosophy

New 19 Nov 2014 Asked by jstaal 34 Comments

Since so many arguments seem to revolve around people not understanding the distinction, I think you should do an article or podcast on the difference between flavor and philosophy of the color pie. (such as how Lignify is flavorfully Green but contrary to Green's philosophical identity)

I’ll stick in in the short list. : )

Lignify vs. Color Identity

New 07 Nov 2014 Asked by smash10101 15 Comments

We know you don't like Song of the Dryads, but how do you feel about lignify? Flavorwise, it feels very green, but the ability seems to be more white to me.

I don’t like Lignify for the exact same reason.

Lignify and Gigantiform

New 03 Nov 2014 Asked by thomeyis 14 Comments

Since you don't like Lignify, does that also mean you don't like Gigantiform because it sets a creature's power/toughness rather than increases it?

Gigantiform in much mores like a giant growth effect so it feels within bounds.

Color Pie Discussion

New 03 Nov 2014 Asked by mononoke86-deactivated20180425 47 Comments

I was discussing Song of the Dryads and the color pie with some friends. They brought up Lignify and Beast Within. Are these acceptable alternatives and are they still in green's slice of the pie?

See, what happens when you make out of color-pie cards. They’re used to justify even more of the same. That’s why I try so hard to stop them, they’re like weeds that replicate.

Color Matching

New 31 Oct 2014 Asked by profoundstatement-buffering-blog 14 Comments

What colour would Song of the Dryads, Lignify and Beast Within belong to, then?

Most of the cards are multicolor.

Design Consistency

New 31 Oct 2014 Asked by deetsposts 42 Comments

Why does Song of Dryads make you sad? Isn't it like Lignify, Beast Within, etc.? Also, if Green can turn forests into creatures (Nissa) why can't it change them back?

Isn’t this card that makes you sad just like other cards that make you sad? The problem when one out-of-color-pie card gets printed it leads to other cards getting printed down the road that use it as precedent. I get sad when I see them because I know it just means more work for me later. (“But we made Card X that you fought with us not to make way back when…”) There is a big difference, by the way, between animating lands and deanimating creatures.

Lignify's Color Pie

New 17 Jul 2014 Asked by waxingnostalgicforthe90s 14 Comments

Why isn't Lignify in green's colour pie? I admit it leans more towards white but "turn-into-tree-with-big-toughness" makes some sense.

Granting defender is white. Permanently changing stats is blue.

Lignify Color Violation

New 16 Jul 2014 Asked by wallycaine 13 Comments

Given that Beast Within is considered a color pie violation, would Lignify also count as a color pie violation for today's color pie?

I consider it one.
