Supreme Verdict Promo Reaction

New 07 Jun 2024 Asked by ricardolongo 151 Comments

Is there a place (or perhaps a survey) where I can express my insactisfaction with the announced Supreme Verdict promo for the next qualifier season? I'm sure there's a public for this sort of card treatment, but surely tournament players largely prefer promos that look more like traditional cards, no?

I think we’re trying different things to see what players enjoy most. How do the rest of you feel about the Supreme Verdict promo?

Overload Design Choices

New 19 Aug 2023 Asked by uhhuh-waitwhat 35 Comments

Looking at cards like Supreme Verdict in the same set, why did Cyclonic Rift (and maybe some other Overload spells in RTR) not have an overload with two colors? Maybe (4)(R)(U)(U)? Was Commander in mind? Did the color pie trump flavor? Limited? Maybe something else?

We were just trying to execute the simplest version for the mechanic’s first outing.

Current Availability of 4 Mana Wraths

New 01 Nov 2021 Asked by junts26 38 Comments

There are definitely formats that want 4 mana wraths, but those formats already have them - Supreme Verdict is in Historic. Most standard formats don't have aggro decks fast enough to handle 4 mana Wraths, and you don't really want most standard formats to have aggro decks that fast. Really, people. You don't!

A good point that the formats that need it, already have it.

Division on Wraths Costs

About wraths why cant white wraps go back to 4 Mana. More supreme verdict and less end hostilities

Four mana’s a little too strong.

To the person asking about Supreme Verdict, Counterflux also costs 3 colored mana

Good point.

Supreme Verdict Costing

New 03 Jan 2015 Asked by carloszero 23 Comments

Why is Supreme Verdict the only card of its cycle that costed more than 2 colored mana?

Cards are costed to make sure they are fair. That card needed more colored mana for that to be true.

Abilities and Colors

New 04 Oct 2014 Asked by deetsposts 16 Comments

In your podcast you mentioned there's always a little bleed. Would you consider the "cannot be countered" ability from Blue on Supreme Verdict to be part of that?

Blue is tertiary in “can’t be countered”. Supreme Verdict was not the first time it was used. I believe it was first used on Last Word from Darksteel.

Protection Mechanic Confusions

New 12 Aug 2014 Asked by wsrwdc 25 Comments

In my experience, its what protection doesn't do that confuses players more than what it does do. For example, my Supreme Verdict will kill something with Protection from White or Protection from Blue.

I think both are problematic.

Uncounterable Magic Insight

New 01 Aug 2014 Asked by adarkconfidant-deactivated20190 15 Comments

You've said that red gets uncounterable instants and socieries, and that green gets uncounterable creatures. This makes sense, as those are both of their focuses, and they both want to hate on blue, as their enemy. So why do blue and white get uncounterable in Supreme Verdict?

Blue is tertiary in “can’t be countered”. It got the “can’t be countered” counterspell a few years ago, for instance.

Keyword Concept Challenge

New 04 Jul 2014 Asked by canna12 51 Comments

Has R&D ever considered a keyword that's kind of the inverse of hexproof, i.e., the permanent with the keyword isn't affected by sweeping effects? For example, a 1/1 green creature with this keyword would die to Doom Blade or Mizzium Mortars, but not Supreme Verdict, Drown in Sorrow, or an overloaded Mizzium Mortars. Sort of like "protection from board wipe" (though "protection" doesn't quite describe it). Is this interesting or too clunky to work?

The rules don’t work for it. We’ve tried to make that card for years.

Black Wrath Effects

New 26 Apr 2014 Asked by hexblade-warlock 12 Comments

I see my question about black wrath effects caused some stir. Good. Anyway, what I meant was, are unconditional wrath effects in black? Other than Damnation, black wrath effects tend to be conditional (extinguish all hope) or profit off of the death of creatures (decree of pain). So, my question is: Are equalizing wrath effects such as wrath of god or supreme verdict really in black?

We don’t do many vanilla wraths because we like mixing it up and there is always great flavor in black mass kill.

Countering the Uncounterable

New 27 Mar 2014 Asked by theredvader 19 Comments

So I was thinking about the idea of a counterspell that can only counter a card that was considered "can't be countered." It would only work for cards like supreme verdict but not normal spells like lightning strike. What do you think about this?

A trace buster buster buster? : ) Pretty narrow. Maybe in a set with a lot of “can’t be countered”.

Blue/Black Removal

New 21 Feb 2014 Asked by orlouge82 18 Comments

Why does blue/white get a "destroy all creatures" spell like Supreme Verdict, but there isn't any kind of mass removal spell in blue/black? It seems like blue/black would be much more likely to destroy things than blue/white.

Blue/black could have a mass removal spell because monoblack can. Black is secondary in mass removal while white is primary and multicolor spells tend to go to the primary color more often.

Supreme Verdict's Color

What's blue about Supreme Verdict? I thought can't be countered was Green/Red.

Blue gets it tertiary.

Control Strategies Appreciation

New 19 May 2013 Asked by mediocreman5-blog-blog 8 Comments

Despite all the complaints about the power level of creatures compared to spells, and the weakening of counterspells over the years, I have to tell you that I really appreciate Return to Ravnica block for all the awesome control tools it brought. AEtherling and Plasm Capture feel like a love letter to old-school control, and Supreme Verdict brings some of Wrath of God's finality back to board sweepers. We control types may whine a lot, but I like to think we're not completely ungrateful. Thanks!

You hit upon a point I keep trying to make which is control isn’t just about spells. There are creatures that also work well in a deck with a control strategy.

Supreme Verdict Query

New 24 Sep 2012 Asked by dukkhasatva 1 Comments

In your article about moving abilities to a secondary or tertiary color, you said tertiary means the color couldn't use it on a multicolor card. Then why was Supreme Verdict okay from this perspective?

Strictly, it’s not. Erik wanted a splashy cycle and asked to stretch color pie and break the rules. We don’t do this often, but we do it every once in a while. I’m not a huge fan of the practice but then I also wish we didn’t print Hornet Sting.
