Thornling Artwork Update

New 21 Jul 2020 Asked by ravenjoybower 42 Comments

Will we ever see a new art for Thornling that matches the other -lings? (Brightling, Endling, Aetherling, Torchling)

It’s on a list of things to do when we get a chance. It’s a long list.

'Ling' Cycle Future

New 27 May 2017 Asked by chazashley175 55 Comments

Hi Mark! I love the "ling" cycle - Morphling, Thornling, Torchling. And yes even Aetherling. Any chance that we can see the Black and white versions in future sets?

Maybe. : )

Human Sacrifice Theme

New 12 Jun 2015 Asked by tattoos-lingerie-and-power-deac 22 Comments

It is my birthday! Could I have some trivia on a creature I owe many wins to, Falkenrath Aristocrat? Or if you don't have any, Aetherling.

Dark Ascension was trying to show the humans in terrible peril so we made a little theme out if sacrificing humans. Happy Birthday!

Blue Creature Power

New 02 Nov 2014 Asked by ricardolongo 31 Comments

The problem with blue's supposed creature weakness is that it doesn't need to have the most creatures for this to matter in constructed; it just needs to have a few high-end ones, which routinely happens. Stuff like Thassa, Master of the Waves, or Aetherling are insanely efficient cards for a color that's supposed to be weak in that space - and see how none of them requires you to play instants/sorceries.

Blue is allowed to have playable creatures. Creatures are half of the available cards. Blue’s issue is volume and the type of creatures it gets. Blue’s creatures tend to need more support than other colors. You can’t just throw one in any deck. You have to build around it. In contrast Green often gets powerful creatures that can just go in any deck that can play green.

Dwarves in Blue

New 17 May 2014 Asked by red--mask 24 Comments

In your recent statement about Dwarves not being "smart" enough to be Blue, does that mean that Aquus Stead, Air Servant, Aetherling, Armored Cancrix, Bane Alley Broker, Benthic Giant, Breaching Hippocamp, Chorus of the Tides, etc. are all smart? In the past you've noted that just because something is blue doesn't necessarily make it smart. Dwarves are artificers, which fits into Blue pretty well, and can be closely associated with Equipment (just like Blue).

I was making a joke. I do not think dwarves are particularly blue as they do not traditionally seek out knowledge nor tend to play up any of blue’s key attributes. Without a major reworking of what dwarves represent, I feel they are mostly red and white.

Creature-Centric Decks Wish

New 25 Apr 2014 Asked by idesama 35 Comments

I, personally, want to see Magic return to a time of creaturemore decks...or even creatureall decks. Do you think we can see a return to a time when we didn't have to worry about all these pesky instants and sorceries or am I doomed to continue to have to face the barrage of blue/white decks that only run a single Aetherling as its creature...if that, sometimes... Not that U/W control has been popular at all during the standard GP or Pro Tours of this past season...?

Aetherling Type Explanation

New 27 May 2013 Asked by placid-laughter-blog 16 Comments

I'm curious as to why Aetherling has the creature type Shapeshifter. I normally would expect shapeshifters to clone other things. Not fade into the aether. Same with Morphling and other "-ling" like creatures. I guess the flavor is just evading me... there's a pun in there somewhere.

Shapeshifters can change their own shape. Not all of them can copy others. In Marvel comics, terms, Mystique is a Shapehsifter but so too is Mr. Fantastic.

Control Strategies Appreciation

New 19 May 2013 Asked by mediocreman5-blog-blog 8 Comments

Despite all the complaints about the power level of creatures compared to spells, and the weakening of counterspells over the years, I have to tell you that I really appreciate Return to Ravnica block for all the awesome control tools it brought. AEtherling and Plasm Capture feel like a love letter to old-school control, and Supreme Verdict brings some of Wrath of God's finality back to board sweepers. We control types may whine a lot, but I like to think we're not completely ungrateful. Thanks!

You hit upon a point I keep trying to make which is control isn’t just about spells. There are creatures that also work well in a deck with a control strategy.
