Energy Mechanic Turnaround

New 29 Jun 2024 Asked by gridnack 7 Comments

When Energy debuted, I didn’t see any cards that interested me and I didn’t get the appeal of the mechanic. Now in Modern Horizons 3, I’m coming around to it. I think MH3 just had more of the designs I’m familiar with and enjoy, so thanks for changing my mind. (It was the white green energy cards oddly enough #aluren)

I’m glad energy finally won you over.

Forced Blocking Mechanic

New 22 Jan 2023 Asked by spadesslick 20 Comments

It’s currently a green ability, but could blue and red share “This creature must be blocked if able”? They both have forced attack, and red is already secondary in both forced block and limited lure (single turn, only one creature must block). It also plays into blue evasion in a way that I believe can shoulder some of the burden currently managed by blue Jump effects.

Red already has access to that ability. We’ve really moved away from forced blocking in blue.

Plane Agnostic Cards Request

New 28 Dec 2022 Asked by strix-soven 60 Comments

Can we please have more plane agnostic cards with unique game-changer effects and simple yet iconic, unique names like Aluren? In case you couldn't tell, I'm a fan of Aluren lol. Everything about the card is [chef's kiss]. It really plays into the mystical fantasy of discovering powerful or ancient magics. Necropotence is another good example. I don't feel the same when spells are specific to characters or events.

We still make those. Probably in higher numbers than the time frame you’re referencing, although admittedly probably smaller in percentage.

Birthday Combo Trivia

New 09 Dec 2022 Asked by dancingindecay138 41 Comments

Hi Mark. I was sick during my birthday a week ago and forgot to message you. As a Spike limited player I was reminiscing earlier about simpler times. I started in Revised, and still love MTG after all these years. When I first started playing as a kid, I was in love with the combo of Bog Wraith and Evil Presence (so much flavor). Can you give me fun trivia about a combo that YOU enjoy?

The first combo that fascinated me was Lure and Thicket Basilisk. The first deck I made was monogreen as my first Starter deck had a Craw Wurm.Happy Belated Birthday!

Birthday Trivia Turntimber Basilisk

New 22 Jul 2022 Asked by gaiaix555 34 Comments

Hey Mark! Can I invoke birthday trivia on one of my favorite cards?
Turntimber Basilisk is the top, but Vault Skirge and Mourning Thrull are my backups :)

Turntimber Baslisk was a nod to an old combo from Alpha - Thicket Basilisk and Lure. We had to weaken it a little as luring all the creatures was too much.Happy Birthday!

Digital vs Paper Legacy Decks

New 01 May 2022 Asked by charble 47 Comments

To answer a previous user's question about Paper Magic doing things digital cannot: There are a number of examples of decks that involve very long sequences that a computer cannot handle easily (or sometimes at all) that often involve long loops. These Paper Legacy decks are quite powerful, but because it is very hard to say "I want to this a million times" on digital, they tend to be played less because it is annoying to play through on a digital client (e.g. Aluren, Food Chain, Bomberman).

Possibility of Colorshifted White Aluren

Power 2 or less, costed correctly, is most likely possible.

Trivia About Aluren

New 26 Dec 2021 Asked by jimmycomments 26 Comments

Merry Christmas Mark! It is also my birthday, so I would like to request some trivia you have on Aluren, please!

Aluren was designed by Mike Elliott. At the time, green was the sole “creature color” and Mike made a card to encourage a green weenie deck. (For green, “weenie” is 3 power or less.) We later upgraded white to being more creature focused and let white excel at small creatures and green at big creatures.Happy Birthday!

Courtly Provocateur's Blue Blocking

New 11 Dec 2020 Asked by brotein-manganiello 29 Comments

Is Courtly Provocateur having forced blocking in blue a break? Could blue get lure effects?

It’s an ability that’s tertiary in blue, so it does it, just infrequently. It’s not a bend or break, just not something we do often.

Blue Discard Cards Examples

New 01 Sep 2020 Asked by tbjanowski 43 Comments

Dear Mark Note Blue has Amnesia, Dismal Failure, Forget Minamos Meddling, Piracy Charm, (my favorite)Probe with Kicker, Riptide Pilferer. Venarian Glimmer potentially Apathy, Coral Net, Mind Bomb and Trapfinder's Trick are all examples of Blue Discard so, no Black does not have a monopoly on Discard.

You can do the same with non-blue counterspells. Note both lists lean pretty heavily on early Magic.

Mono White Card Design

New 28 Dec 2019 Asked by ilgwa 36 Comments

Could today's spoiled card "Allure of the Unknown" be possible as a mono White card? Drawing cards whilst giving the best card to your opponent seems both humble and social (and thus very White) to me :D

White shouldn’t get “Do Thing X. Draw 5 cards.”

Aluren Templating Update

New 23 Sep 2019 Asked by hyrosen-blog 34 Comments

Printed Aluren refers to creature "cards", Oracle to creature "spells". Given Adventures, is this a functional change?

Early magic used “cards” lazily. The intent was always spells, we just didn’t have tight enough templating.

Aluren's Design Origins

Hey mark it's my birthday and I'd like to request some background from design or lore about my favorite magic card of all time Aluren.

Aluren was designed by Mike Elliott as a way to encourage a weenie green deck.Happy Birthday!

Green Enchantments

New 22 Dec 2015 Asked by slimonz 28 Comments

Has green gone away from having powerful, interesting enchantments? Like Sylvan Library (out of colour pie, I know), Survival of the Fittest, Aluren, Pattern of Rebirth, etc? Seems like a space green used to play in that it doesn't any more...

Green is still allowed access to powerful, in color pie, enchantments.

Aluren's Text Origins

New 31 Jul 2015 Asked by turnonethoughtseize 12 Comments

Does Aluren's oracle text say "Any player may PLAY creature CARDS" rather than "CAST creature SPELLS" solely because of Dryad Arbor?

No, it just has to do with different vocabulary being used at the time. There was a period were all spells were “played” rather than “cast”.

Aluren Flavor Text Impact

New 12 Oct 2014 Asked by mendycant-deactivated20160215 9 Comments

This is a way back question, but did the flavor text on Aluren influence the converted mana costs of Mirri, and later Squee?

Not that I know of.

Aluren Card Background

New 05 Apr 2014 Asked by clyspe 7 Comments

Hey maro it's my birthday today, I was wondering if I could have some trivia on Aluren

Aluren was designed by Mike Elliot during Tempest design. It was meant to encourage a weenie strategy, something green did more of back in the day. Happy birthday!

Werewolves Design Choice

New 28 Mar 2014 Asked by bass-borot 11 Comments

Finished the podcast on Innistrad today, and you don't mention it at all. Were flip cards ever considered for werewolves? I know they weren't a success or anything, but they fulfill a similar purpose in-game, although the psychological effect is obviously much smaller.

Flip cards were a dismal failure so no I never considered them as a choice for werewolves. The only thing flip cards did do was make me doubt a little if double-faced cards would work. But they avoided a lot of the problems with flip cards (muddy image, confusion on tapped state, etc.) so we gave them a try.

Commons with Different Arts

New 24 Aug 2012 Asked by alphasquid 0 Comments

Do you think it would be too daunting for commons in a set to have 2 different arts per card?

We tried it in Fallen Empires (where every common on the sheet had its own unique picture) and it was a dismal failure. Players need a single art that they can learn so they know what card is on the table without having to read it.
