Card Templating

New 29 Mar 2023 Asked by dospunk 31 Comments

Why did y'all settle on the "exile up to one..." templating (like on Guardian of Ghirapur) instead of "you may exile a..."? The latter seems much more readable to me.

Whenever we use “up to one” in a template, it’s to stop unintuitive things from happening.

Colorless Legendaries' Costing Issue

New 09 Mar 2020 Asked by rosebuncat 37 Comments

Regarding colorless legendaries, the thing I most want with them is interesting effects that aren't about artifacts, with the legendary themselves costing a maximum of 6 mana. While Hope of Ghirapur is interesting, I don't think it's particularly fun as a commander, as in order to use it's effect, you must lose it-and pay 3 or 5 or 7 mana to get it back.

Not expensive but not undercutting any of the colors is narrow space.

Expanding Kaladesh

Can I formally request that a return to Kaladesh expand its scope beyond the city of Ghirapur?

You may.

Brawl Format Concerns

New 24 Mar 2018 Asked by mrmoustachemm 59 Comments

Currently there are only 18 lands in Standard with a colourless colour identity (ie no colour mana symbols), excluding Evolving Wilds (no Wastes to fetch) and transformed lands (which don't really contribute to a deck's land count). I'd suggest that if Brawl has any colourless commanders legal (like Hope of Ghirapur or Karn), there should be at least 25 unique colourless lands available, or Wastes should be always be printed in Standard (maybe in Deckbuilder Toolkits).

It’s an issue that has been raised and I know R&D is going to talk about it. Brawl is a new format so it will have some early growing as we figure out issues. Input from all of you with concerns will have us figure out these issues.

Colorless Brawl Deck

New 24 Mar 2018 Asked by gallivantcanary 57 Comments

In Brawl, would basic Wastes be legal if you were playing a colorless deck such as Karn or Hope of Ghirapur or is a colorless Brawl Deck just not currently possible/efficient?

Not currently, but it’s a new format and I’m curious to hear suggestions for improvement.

Daunt Mechanic's Future

New 06 May 2017 Asked by wanderingrootwalla-blog 27 Comments

Another question: After putting "Daunt" in Kaladesh with Elegant Edgecrafters and Ghirapur Guide, you have put it in Amonkhet as well with Greater Sandwurm. Is that a mechanic we can expect to see more of in the future? Does it play well enough to evergreen potential?

We like it enough that we’re using it at a low level. I’m not sure of its future.

Podcast Content Diversity

New 25 Mar 2017 Asked by gophilipbowles 14 Comments

Regarding the podcasts, they're an interesting idea and evidently many people like them, but their content wasn't varied enough to sustain an unbroken six-week stretch. Given that the Kaladesh block story focused much more exclusively on the Gatewatch narrative than previous ones stories about side characters, or a planeswalkers' guide that actually added new detail (the one we got was just a collation of previously-published material), would have fleshed out the setting outside Ghirapur.

How do others feel about the creative team podcasts?

New Areas in Returns

New 30 Dec 2016 Asked by sultaiascendancy-blog 64 Comments

Could we see more return blocks that explore new areas of the plane (like how Dominaria had many blocks on different continents)? In my opinion, it's more interesting than seeing the same thing again with a new threat, and it would be a good way to introduce things that people wanted but didn't make sense in the previously visited sections (ex. Rakhasa, Naga, and Atogs on Kaladesh, but not in Ghirapur). Also, there are supposed to be other types of lycanthropes across the sea on Innistrad.

Properties with a lot of worlds (“Star Wars” and “Star Trek” are good examples) need to give each world a very clear identity to set them apart from one another. Tatooine is a desert planet, for instance, and not a multi-faceted ecosystem.Early Magic staying in one place for so long was a mistake. Jamuraa should have been an African-inspired plane and not a separate continent. One of the things that has kept us from returning to Dominaria is trying to wrestle with a world that doesn’t have a cohesive identity. My point is that worlds having a strong, recognizable identity is a big plus especially as we add more and more planes to the game, so I don’t think we want to return to Innistrad and visit a continent that looks and feels completely different.

Color Pie Bends

New 04 Jul 2015 Asked by neitherjakenoramir 23 Comments

Regarding "Origin of Synergy", this week's Limited Information article on the red-blue artifact theme in Magic Origins: Reclusive Artificer is red-blue but feels mono-red to me (haste and dealing damage). Ghirapur Gearcrafter is red but feels white or blue to me. (I can't even think of a red card that makes artifact tokens that aren't land mines.) Would you call these color pie bends?

The gold card is designed to encourage you in draft, to play the Blue/Red theme. You are correct the card could have been made in monoRed by the abilities but then it wouldn’t communicate the draft combination. As for the second card, Red is allowed to make tokens, it even makes flying tokens on occasion but those tend to be Dragon tokens. Small flying tokens is a tiny bend. The being artifacts is not inherently out of flavor.
