Emrakul and Brisela Decision

New 03 Jun 2024 Asked by violet-returned 9 Comments

Why wasn't there a Meld Emrakul in Eldritch Moon, though?

There was only one rare/mythic rare Meld pair and the story strongly wanted it to be Brisela. (It was two known creatures that literally melded together to make a new creature.)

DFC Presentation Preferences

For future sets with double sided cards, have you considered going back to the Eldritch Moon Checklist style token? It seems very clean compared to the blank ones to write on

Emrakul Design Discussion

New 01 Feb 2024 Asked by sarroth 22 Comments

During Eldritch Moon design, was there ever any discussion of having Emrakul have a 5-color emerge cost to have a 5-color identity for Commander?

Not that I remember.

UB Product Similarity

New 12 Oct 2023 Asked by cassiesuccubus 28 Comments

Hi Mark. I was curious - would the fact that Magic already has a very similar setting or product help or hinder a UB product? For example, would the existence of Shadows of Innistrad and Eldritch Moon be a factor when evaluating a potential UB product based on a certain literary cosmic horror IP that pioneered the genre?

We’d do a Universes Beyond property even if Magic already did our take on the genre. At least, that won’t be the thing that stops us.

Werewolves Mechanics Caution

New 12 Sep 2023 Asked by theothin 24 Comments

Is the reluctance to make werewolves with other mechanics in non-Innistrad sets a reaction to backlash against their implementation in EMN? I get the impression there may be confounding factors there.

Let’s just say it didn’t help.

Support for Werewolf Decks

New 27 Aug 2023 Asked by b4ym4n 76 Comments

In my last post, a lot of people were confused about the intent of my post. I apologize for being redundant but here goes...If one builds a werewolf deck, they are forced to play with the same cards (that aren't very good) for three years. Meanwhile, vampires get cards in every set. Some are even legendary. 6 legendary in VOW, werewolves got zero btw. There have been multiple sets the past two years where wolves and werewolves exists on that plane. Dominaria. Eldraine. MOM. Yet, they get nothing. What is the point of making Midnight Hunt/Vow if the tribe would not be supported even by an extra card or two during standard rotation? (Especially after the blunders in dark ascension and eldritch moon, you would think treating them better would be a priority). Wicked Wolf, Nightpack ambusher, werewolf packleader...these cards exist...outside of innistrad. There is literally no excuse to not throw in a single card for this tribe every once in a while. So again, if someone builds a werewolf deck and receives no new cards that help them, what do you say to them playing the same weak cards for three years straight?

I understand when you are focused on a single theme that it’s frustrating because there are many potential opportunities for us to make cards. From our perspective though, there are a lot of themes in Standard. We try to hit upon as many as we can, but it’s just hard to hit them all. Werewolves are particularly tricky as we usually make them double-faced.

Theme vs Plane Origin

New 22 Jun 2023 Asked by chairborne33 53 Comments

In your podcast you mentioned Eldritch Moon WotC had an idea for a theme (cosmic horror) and chose Innistrad as a plane with horror theme to execute it in. As a lesson learned you said that may not have been a good idea to drift from Innistrad's core gothic horror theme because players had an attachment to Innistrad's flavor. We are returning to Ixalan and Eldraine this year and I was wondering if the theme was chosen first and WotC found planes to fit them or were the planes chosen first?

Wilds of Eldraine - started with return to Eldraine.Lost Caverns of Ixalan - started with underground world (original plan was new world).

Phyrexian Transformers Speed

New 28 May 2023 Asked by jimharbor 38 Comments

What led you to making the Phyrexian Transformers in MOM sorcery speed as opposed to instant speed like adapt, monstrous and the EMN werewolves.

Playtesting the cards. Note that incubate filled the instant transmutation space.

Eldritch Moon Werewolves

New 10 May 2023 Asked by katzenwiege 33 Comments

"We did something similar in Eldritch Moon (Werewolf on front and mutated version on back) and it didn’t go over well." They were a bit awkward to play with Immerwolf, but still surprised to hear they weren't popular. Was it just the synergies, or some other issue?

The market research more measure what they think than why. My best guess is that Werewolves had a tight mechanical identity and these didn’t fit with it.

Phyrexian Werewolf Consideration

New 10 May 2023 Asked by void-locket 65 Comments

Was there ever any consideration for making a Phyrexian werewolf in March of the Machine?

We did something similar in Eldritch Moon (Werewolf on front and mutated version on back) and it didn’t go over well.

Unique Creature Type

New 13 Apr 2023 Asked by majoraatio 56 Comments

Why was the EMN card Cryptolith Fragment // Aurora of Emrakul deemed special enough to receive a unique creature type in Reflection, with it still being the only card with the type? Wouldn't Illusion or Spirit have served the same purpose?

You made Spirit Mirror cry.

Meld Mechanic in Draft

New 30 Sep 2022 Asked by 4blackout 35 Comments

I was incredibly excited for Meld to return, as I felt it wasn't given a proper chance to shine back in Eldritch Moon. But hearing there are only three pairs again is very disappointing. What made it not work in draft? Couldn't the as-fan be solved by seeding each pack with one side of a Meld pair?

I swear we did try. It’s just a lot harder to make work than it might appear.

Cosmic Horror Themes

New 08 Aug 2022 Asked by jellobrand 40 Comments

Hello Mark, I was looking through all the ravnica blocks and just wanted to comend you (especially on original ravnica) for the wonderful design work! Totally irrelevant to my question though, which is: Is cosmic horror something that would be revisited, or was Eldritch Moon a more one time visit to the genre?

Thank you for the kind words.I don’t expect Innistrad to do cosmic horror again, but I never say never. I do expect us to do other sets with horror themes that aren’t on Innistrad (it’s a deep genre), and one of those might touch upon cosmic horror.

Monowhite Sac Outlet

New 04 Aug 2022 Asked by spaismanspif 45 Comments

Can I request a repeatable sac outlet that can be played in a monowhite deck? We don't have one on arena and the last one to be in Standard is Lunarch Mantle from Eldritch Moon. Obviously it's not a common effect for white, but is it still in color? White often is part of Aristocrat strategies.

White is willing to sacrifice itself to help the group, but it’s not big on sacrificing others.

Kamigawa Neon Dynasty Appreciation

New 28 Jan 2022 Asked by northernweird 82 Comments

Mark, I am delighted to notice increase in the main story quality with Kamigawa Neon Dynasty. While there is some parts I am lukewarm on, it warms my heart the effort made to connect the story to original Kamigawa and more recent Magic fiction, from the Agent of Artifice, to web fiction from Eldritch Moon and Kaladesh interlude! The effort made in keeping character's stories and tones consistent made them feel distinct and memorable, and was absolutely vital for the final reveal to sting as much as it did. I was worried I was growing numb to Magic story, but the creative team and Bowman have proven me wrong. Please, pass out my hight fives to the team!

Will do.

SOI and EMN References

New 11 Nov 2021 Asked by lowclasshifi-deactivated2022042 92 Comments

It seems the only direct reference to SOI/EMN in the new Innistrad sets is Ulvenwald Oddity. Given the narrative severity of that block, why isn't this aspect of the plane given more space on the cards themselves? To me, it feels a little like disregarding the past or sweeping it under the rug.

The whole story in Midnight Hunt hinges on the effects of Emrakul being in the moon.

Day/Night Effect Disparity

New 09 Nov 2021 Asked by zennithgp 37 Comments

Hey, Mark! Just to respond to some previous asks about why Day/Night doesn't affect older werewolves - while Innistrad and Dark Ascension's werewolves could work with a modified Day/Night token affecting human and nonhuman werewolves, Eldritch Moon's Eldrazi Werewolves have no human side and aren't meant to repeatedly switch between forms. Not saying you couldn't have made a Day/Night token that works for them all, but it'd have likely been super wordy.

The backward compatibility issues were never meant for the Eldritch Moon Werewolves.

Confusing Sun/Moon Symbol

New 01 Oct 2021 Asked by alienitems 51 Comments

I do think it's confusing that separate mechanics involving two-sided cards all have the sun/moon symbol in MID. These symbols seem intuitively tied to daybound/nightbound, but they don't seem have a good logical association with Disturb or the other transform cards. It's not intuitive that you could have two cards on the battlefield with the same day/night symbol and one transforms with day/night, the other doesn't. Was it looked at to use different symbols for Disturb and Transform?

All TDFCs in previous Innistrad sets (barring Eldritch Moon) used the sun and moon symbols, so I believe we just continued what we had done before. I agree, in retrospect, that daybound/nightbound should have made us reconsider that.

Werewolves in Midnight Hunt

New 16 Sep 2021 Asked by leoninoftheignoredpride 86 Comments

Expectations due to the initial name of "Innistrad Werewolves" aside, a lot of disappointment is also due to MTG's werewolf history. Of Innistrad's 5 tribes WWs are the ONLY one absent from other planes, absent from Avacyn Restored, & not getting a commander deck. Their mechanic was abandoned as they became Eldrazi in Eldritch Moon, & day/nightbound is a soft reset, etc... Given all this I was hoping MID would go above and beyond w/WWs. Not just be a normal Innistrad set w/minor theming.

Obviously, we could always do more than we did, but I do want to stress that we did more with Werewolves than we ever have in any set before. • The set has more Werewolves than any other set. Yes, I get it’s only 7 more, but when the previous record was 12, that’s a big jump up. • We did Werewolves as a vertical cycle in a third color. • We did Werewolves as one-of’s in a fourth and fifth color.• We brought back our Werewolf planeswalker• We designed what we think will be the definitive Werewolf Commander, something players have been begging for years.• The set’s main mechanic is a tweak on the “Werewolf mechanic”. • The set’s story revolves around the Werewolves. I think calling Midnight Hunt “a normal Innistrad set w/ minor theming” is unfair characterization of the set. It’s clearly a Werewolf-focused Innistrad set. I get maybe not Werewolf enough for some players, but it’s not like Scourge where we sold it as “a dragon set” and it had four Dragons (and a bunch of Dragon-themed cards) in it.
