Child of Alara

Acorn Ruling

Hey Mark I had an Acorn ruling question for you. For Vorthos, Steward of Myth, what qualifies as a "named character"? Do things like Sliver Hivelord, Child of Alara, and Fusion Elemental count since they are only known as that moniker, even if those aren't "names" in the traditional sense?

If that’s how they’re referred to, that’s fine.

Death Triggers in Commander

New 24 Dec 2019 Asked by petruscaex 44 Comments

About Commander and death triggers, Mark, Gerrard and Child of Alara are two examples of really strong legends with death triggers that do see play in Commander. We're really used to play around the limitations of our commanders, so don't be afraid and trust our creativity : ) the colors that want those legends with death triggers will be capable of dealing with their commanders on the graveyard.

I’m telling you the rules are impacting what we’ll design. Gerard uses a wordy death trigger wording that we’re willing to use in a Commander specific product. Child of Alara probably would not have been made under the current rule set. As Head Designer, that restriction makes me sad as it keeps us from making some cool designs.

RE: Avacyn being the only character who is not a planeswalker and have her name on a set. Does Child of Alara count?

No, that’s not a proper name.

Alara and Grixis

Mark, today is my birthday, so could I get some trivia on Child of Alara or the shard of Grixis?

Shards of Alara had five mini design teams dedicated to each shard. I led the Esper team and was on the Bant and Naya teams. Which mechanic did I create? Unearth, the Grixis one. Happy Birthday!

Legendary Creatures' Consciousness

Was isamaru sentient? What about lot celestial Kirin, pheldagrif, polukranos, child of alara, gahaji, the sliver legends, thromok, etc?

Sentience means having sensation or consciousness. Sapience means having wisdom or judgment. All living creatures have sentience. Only intelligent creatures have sapience. Thus, all legendary creatures have sentience but not all have sapience.

Commander Rules Modification

New 06 Mar 2015 Asked by chibinyanta 29 Comments

Couldn't you modify the rules of Commander to just add a "White List" of acceptable nonlegendary commanders with the Nephilim on it? I think most casual groups would allow it anyway, and people who hate fun already have Child of Alara.

Wizards is not in charge of the Commander format. The committee that does it is external.

Child Characters in Magic

New 07 Oct 2012 Asked by smoortoss 14 Comments

there are 2 child-related cards in mtg history(that I can think of): little girl and child of alara. are the people in R&D afraid of having children?

The game is about combat. Not a lot of people, especially parents, want to send little kids to fight for them. (Note that one of those cards, Little Girl, was a parody from Unhinged.)
