If a WBRG instant read "counter target spell" would that be a bend, a break, or in pie?

A break.

Cyber Conversion Mechanics

New 26 Jul 2024 Asked by mgmegadog 0 Comments

Is Cyber Conversion a break, a bend, or in pie? Flickering the creature removes the effect, as does turning it face-up if it has morph or disguise, but it's otherwise a much more permanent effect than an aura.

It’s a bend, but I could see is doing it in a set with morph/disguise.

Black's Game Dynamics

Can Black still turn creatures into 0/2s like Sudden Spoiling or Sorceress Queen?

It’s not in black’s slice of color pie, but more bend than break.

Black Spell Control Mechanisms

New 25 Jul 2024 Asked by irlnautica 5 Comments

Would a black spell or effect that lets you take control of a permanent be an acceptable bend? I know taking control is usually blue or red, but it doesn't feel like a break because black can already cast other players' spells.

We let black mess with other people’s stuff, but more often from the graveyard or their library.

Color Abilities Evolution

New 24 Jul 2024 Asked by ge-hi 8 Comments

Are there any examples of things that were once considered bends for colors that are now just something those colors can do?

The color pie evolves over time, so yes. For example, vigilance in blue was once a bend and is now a regular ability.

Understanding a Decent Bend

New 24 Jul 2024 Asked by szwanger 3 Comments

Is a "pretty decent bend" decent in the "good" sense because it's almost in pie, or decent in the "very" sense because it's almost a break?

It’s the kind of thing we allow to happen, but very infrequently.

It’s a pretty decent bend.

Approach to Color-breaking Cards

New 21 Jul 2024 Asked by alwaysatoad 4 Comments

Hey Mark! I'm wondering, why do you allow yourself to reprint color-breaking cards? It gives players, especially newer players, the wrong idea about the color pie. Instead of reprinting Chaos Warp, why not either (A) print a different, non-breaking card that achieves whatever it is Chaos Warp achieves for red, or (B) change the color pie so Chaos Warp isn't a break?

The problem is players want access to the cards. The compromise was to not add them to formats that they aren’t legal in. That’s why color pie breaks won’t get reprinted in premier sets (not counting bonus sheets that don’t change card legality).

Color Pie Break/Bend

New 19 Jul 2024 Asked by quantext 3 Comments

Would Finest Hour be considered a color pie break/bend today?

I think white is secondary in extra combat steps, but we do the effect so infrequently that’s it’s tough for secondary to get many cards.

Color Pie and Rate Philosophy

New 16 Jul 2024 Asked by bobbymcbobbo 1 Comments

"The rate is probably too good, but that’s not a color pie issue" Is this a change from your prior philosophy about the colour pie? You used to consider Swords to Plowshares a break simply due to its rate.

Extreme rate can cause color pie breaks, but only in areas where multiple colors do the same thing and one color is supposed to be weaker at it.

Question on Concordant Crossroads

New 16 Jul 2024 Asked by deathworld12 5 Comments

is concordant crossroads a bend break or neither?

Green is secondary in haste. Usually granting the ability is more for the primary color than the secondary, but we do allow the secondary color to do it a little. The rate is probably too good, but that’s not a color pie issue.

Syphon Mind: a Break?

I consider it a break.

Reprinting Choices in Commander Products

New 10 Jul 2024 Asked by zombsidian 23 Comments

Why do we get cards reprinted in Commander products, like Chaos Warp, that are breaks but get reprinted, while cards like Cabal Ritual don't get reprints in these types of products even though they're less of a break?

Reprint products are allowed to reprint color pie breaks as long as they don’t add them to a new format. I assume they reprint Chaos Warp more than Cabal Ritual because it’s more in demand.

Color Pie and Category Pricing

New 07 Jul 2024 Asked by shadowman2099 26 Comments

Color Pie Question. Can a card’s base rate (mana value, power, toughness, etc.) cause color Pie bends or breaks? I say yes, but others have said no since card balance and the color pie are different topics according to them. For instance, targeted creature removal is generally more restrictive/less efficient in White compared to Black. If you take the card Quicksand Whirlpool and reduce the Mana cost from 5W to 1W, would this be 1. only a card balance issue, 2. a bend, or 3. a break?

There are places where rate matters in the color pie, but usually it’s does this color do this effect or not?

Hybrid Card Design Possibilities

New 27 Jun 2024 Asked by painfully-bisexual 10 Comments

Hi Mark! Back again with another question. Regardless of likelihood, do you feel it would ever be possible to design a card that cost {w/u}{b/r} without it being a break? Fiend Artisan, for example, is in pie whether you cast it for BB, BG, or GG. Do you think a card could work in pie that could be cast for WB, WR, UB, or UR?

You just design a card with one ability that’s hybrid w/u and a second ability that’s hybrid b/r. Very doable. The bigger issue is multiple hybrid symbols, especially ones that don’t overlap, confuse a significant amount of players.

Blue Creature's Reach

New 26 Jun 2024 Asked by khaoskrtr 16 Comments

Modern Horizons includes a 4U common creature with reach. I understand blue doesn't have problems blocking flyers but it's so weird to see reach on a blue card.

Reach is an aesthetic bend (aka the color doesn’t usually do this to help the colors feel distinct) not a mechanical one. That is why it feels weird.

Green's Casting Spells Ability

"Stopping players from casting spells is not a green thing" - Is Dosan the Falling Leaf a break?

We used to let green stop casting spells on other turns, but stopped a while back.

Transforming Card Colors

New 25 Jun 2024 Asked by fanfactorpodcast 2 Comments

Can a blue battle with U in it's mana cost transform into a card that's not U color identity and do an effect not in blue?

Not something that’s a break in blue. If the back is another color, we treat it like a hybrid design.

Darkness from Legends Category

New 21 Jun 2024 Asked by deathworld12 3 Comments

is darkness from legends a bend break or neither?

Black can technically get “all attacking creatures get -N/-0”, so it’s more bend than break, but not something we want to be doing in black.

Thoughts on Fists of Flame

New 11 Jun 2024 Asked by hedgeiii 9 Comments

Hey, Mark-Fists of Flame feels like a severe bend or a break to me. Caring about drawn cards does not feel remotely red.I'm curious what your thoughts are?Thanks- E3

Red is allowed to care about cards drawn. It’s not undermining red’s weakness in any way.
