Animal Appearance in Duos

New 17 Jul 2024 Asked by pvonvil 5 Comments

From what I can gather all the duos, like Bakersbane Duo are in shards: Bakersbane duo is green but fits in a squirrel (bg) or raccoon deck (rg), making it a basically a Jund card. The black cards are an exception: Glivedive duo is in a wedge, Mardu (bat wb and lizard rb). Presumably the other black one will be squirrel (bg) and rat (ub)My question is: why? Is the pattern of shards intentional? Is the deviation to one color having wedges intentional?

The only guideline was each animal appeared in just two duos.

Bloomburrow Thematic Construction

New 15 Jul 2024 Asked by shitstormwastaken 0 Comments

You've said you've been seeding the Bloomburrow creature types for a few sets now. Was the decision to make Aclazotz a Bat God, and thus introduce bats and bat themes to the white/black Ixalan vampires, at all influenced by the Bloomburrow bats? There are a lot of pretty obvious similarities (colors, animal type, religion) between the two archetypes across the sets.

If you see any relevant animals in the last Magic “year”, we were very aware of their Bloomburrow needs when we added them to files.

Bats in Bloomburrow Lore

New 14 Jul 2024 Asked by weevil-mastermind 20 Comments

I’d like to say thank you for not making the bats in Bloomburrow vampires. Or at least not making vampirism their main thing in the lore. Vampire bats are cool but overdone considering only 3 out of over 1,400 bat species drink blood (and those 3 species of vampire bay are only found in Central America and South America.)

In Bloomburrow, the Bats are the clergy.

Deciding Bat Card’s Color

Bats are the white/black archetype.

Unpacking Bat Card Lifegain Mechanic

Do Bats have something more interesting going on than lifegain?

Their play pattern is intermixed with gaining and spending life, but there’s a lot more nuance to it.

Possible A+B Exile Mechanic

New 08 Jul 2024 Asked by kuldothaphoenix 1 Comments

could we see an A+B mechanic designed around A exiling cards and B getting cards exiled with mechanic A back? Kinda like an inverted version of the processor setup from BFZ where you do it for your own benefit?

We need to be careful that a mechanic can’t get back cards that were exiled by a card where the intent was it wasn’t to return.

Impact of Negative Player Feedback

New 05 Jun 2024 Asked by boymeetsanime 3 Comments

Hi Mark! When you track the metrics of how well, or poorly, something is received, does the nature of the metric affect its likelihood of returning? e.g. with the Processors from BFZ, would "players didn't think they had a strong enough pay off" be more likely to risk another try compared to "players found ability confusing" or "players found there wasn't enough exiling in sealed/standard"?

We do take into account why we think players didn’t like something, but player disapproval of something in its first outing does lessen the chance of a second outing.

Consensus on Eldrazi Processors

New 01 Jun 2024 Asked by rapicho 71 Comments

Hi mark I saw you respond to a request for future eldrazi sets so i wanted to make one too, if possible please bring back eldrazi processors they were awesome! we so rarely see cards that interact with exile and as more cast from exile etc mechanics get created id just love to see a viable effect like that again. Shout out to wasteland strangler in particular!

Processors weren’t super popular. What did you all think of them (from Battle for Zendikar).

Considering Two Set Blocks

New 23 May 2024 Asked by roborabbitart 0 Comments

So I understand that three set blocks tend to wear people out, but has there been any consideration for two set blocks? I've been feeling more and more over the years that a lot of recent mechanics just don't get enough support because they're often one-and-done, and it'll be a miracle to ever see them again. It also feels like recent settings don't get fleshed out and don't get time to breathe, save Eldraine which got revisited surprisingly quickly.

Battle for Zendikar, Shadows over Innistrad, Kaladesh, Amonkhet, and Ixalan were all two set blocks.

Block Sales Trends

New 16 Mar 2024 Asked by izzipurrito 40 Comments

"Introduce mechanics, then expand upon them *is* how blocks worked."In a nutshell, this kind of design sense should work. After looking at the reason why blocks were retired, the second sets selling less, I think that blocks existing wasn't the problem. The power level was.I would say the culprit is actually the power level. You can have the most beautifully flavourful world you ever made, but Modern Horizons has shown that power level is what sells. Battle For Zendikar is a good example here. I *LOVE* the flavor of this set. Standard aside though, there isn't really any reason to look at any of the mechanics here. Consume is an interesting mechanic, but there aren't any viable strategies that can utilize it. Devoid gives colored decks the ability to play colorless spells, but there aren't really any payoffs to using colorless spells over the colored spells, especially when the colored spells are more mana eficient. This idea is backed up by War of the Spark. That set, to my knowledge, sold very well. It had a very strong flavor and it took the idea of planeswalkers to a brand new level. But unlike Battle for Zendikar, players had a solid reason to play these cards. This is just my two cents, and I can definitely be wrong here. I'm sure the person who works for Wotc most definitely has a better idea on why blocks were retired than the person who doesn't work for Wotc.

The 100%/80%/60% trend of block sales was consistent regardless of set power level. Mirrodin, for example, definitely wasn’t too weak, yet had the same trend line.

Battle for Zendikar Feedback

New 12 Feb 2024 Asked by 80sreckless 47 Comments

Hi Mark, I wanted to ask you about Battle for Zendikar and how you have said that the concept of the set was a mistake because it wasn't about what the fans loved about Zendikar, and your thoughts about the relationship to current sets and how for example Murders at Karlov Manor isn't about what the fans loved about Ravncia (the guilds) does this make you rethink your feelings about BFZ in any way? Is it actually a set ahead of its time, or was something else wrong about it?

Backdrop sets are a newer thing, and we’re still working how best to make them. The problem with Battle of Zendikar wasn’t just that we deviated from what we had done last time, but what we offered wasn’t something the majority wanted. I do think we could use Zendikar as a backdrop for another theme.

I assume when, but probably not as high an as-fan as Battle for Zendikar.

Popularity vs. Design

New 19 Nov 2023 Asked by szwanger 47 Comments

What set best exemplifies the combination of popular success and highly flawed design?

Battle for Zendikar. I was unhappy with the design (not development, the part of the process I oversaw), but the set sold very well. I don’t know if that exactly meets the criteria of “popular”, but it’s the set that did well despite what I felt was a poor design on my part.

DFCs Frequency Insight

New 31 Oct 2023 Asked by jtb123 45 Comments

Hi! I'm curious about your thoughts on the frequency of DFCs in recent sets. I believe 8/11 standard-legal expansions in the last three years have had DFCs in them. Is this a temporary multi-year arc, or do you think they will stay this integral to the game going forward? (I personally like DFCs occasionally, but it is a lot to read and adds a lot of board complexity IMO). fwiw I really liked the execution in BFZ

The pendulum swings and we’re at the higher end of the spectrum. DFCs have prove to be a useful and popular tool, so we use it more than we once did.

Defending Wilds of Eldraine

New 08 Sep 2023 Asked by dungeonmasterryan 74 Comments

You seem much more defensive of WOE than other recent sets. This reminds me very much of BFZ, While I understand that you need to defend the product, are qe going to get a scathing DtW and Article in 6 months time about WOE?

The response to Wilds of Eldraine has been primarily positive. I’d call it well above average. Any negativity is me trying to talk with players here that want to express what they don’t like. There’s only so many “I love it” posts before it just gets repetitive. I’m personally very happy with Wilds of Eldraine’s design.

Design Template Views

New 11 Jul 2023 Asked by nightfiremelody 29 Comments

What is your opinion on the design template of cards costing a certain color to cast, but only having a meaningful impact if other colors are spent as part of their cost? For example, in original Ravnica, when a card would say, "if [color] was spent to cast ~, [do this]." Or, in a similar vein, Converge in BFZ.

It’s useful in certain types of design.

Zendikar Design Success

New 19 Jun 2023 Asked by flakmaniak 52 Comments

I'm surprised by the section of today's article about Battle for Zendikar; wasn't it the bestselling set of all time, shortly after it came out? Was it not hugely successful?

It sold very well. That doesn’t mean the design couldn’t have been flawed.
