Wrenn and Six

Wrenn's Narrative Inclusion

New 24 Mar 2023 Asked by zombiedinosaurtoken-deactivated 63 Comments

Did you know that Wrenn would be an important character in the Phyrexian story when we got Wrenn and Six in Modern Horizons?

We liked the character, so we put her into Modern Horizons to see what the audience thought of her. Once we knew the fans liked her, we found an opportunity to use her in the story.

Name Changing

New 22 Sep 2022 Asked by lemonfont 31 Comments

Can I use Truss, Chief Engineer to turn Wrenn and Six into Wrenn and Seven? Does that change the properties of what the card can do?

You can do it. It changes its name, but that has minimal mechanical meaning other than it lets you cast a second one and avoids things like Pithing Needle.

Wrenn's Creation Timeline

New 05 Sep 2021 Asked by gus-goose 74 Comments

You’ve mentioned in the past that Will and Rowan were created for Eldraine, then seeded in battlebond. Can I ask if the same thing happened to Wrenn and Six/Seven in modern horizons 1?

The Midnight Hunt story did not yet exist when Wrenn was first designed in Modern Horizons.

Wrenn in Modern Horizons

New 13 Aug 2021 Asked by emracoolio 50 Comments

Was Wrenn and Six in Modern Horizons a throw-forward like Kaya was in Conspiracy? Or was the decision to include Wrenn in Midnight Hunt made later?

I think we tested the waters with Wrenn in Modern Horizons and the audience liking her convinced us to use her in the main story.

Wrenn and Thirteen Concept

I know that Wrenn and Six was the last incarnation seen, but since we're on Innistrad, why not Wrenn and 13?

How much time do you think has passed? Wrenn lost seven treefolk?

Inconsistency in Change of Rules

New 08 Aug 2021 Asked by mgmegadog 37 Comments

"Just as Sleight of Mind can’t turn a Black Knight into a Blue Knight, More or Less can’t turn Wrenn and Seven into Wrenn and Six. It only affects rules text." More or Less doesn't say "change the text" though, and this directly disagrees with one of the rulings which states "You can change power or toughness. If you change a toughness of 1 to 0, the creature will probably die." despite P/T not being part of a cards rules text.

One of my guidelines of being the Un-Rules Manager is I try very hard not to contradict black border rules when things line up. I want as much consistency between the Un and non-Un rules as possible. Sleight of Mind and Magical Hack clearly established that they can only affect rules text and not names (why you can’t Sleight a Black Knight into a Blue Knight). When changing power/toughness came up, it didn’t have a straight parallel, so I allowed it as it had a big rules application.

Use of More or Less Card

New 07 Aug 2021 Asked by presidentark 43 Comments

Un-rules question: Can I use More or Less on Wrenn and Six/seven to change that number? And if so, can I use it against an opponent with both wrenns out to make them sacrifice one due to the legend rule?

Just as Sleight of Mind can’t turn a Black Knight into a Blue Knight, More or Less can’t turn Wrenn and Seven into Wrenn and Six. It only affects rules text.

Grist Trivia Interest

New 20 Jul 2021 Asked by jonathan-hecht 61 Comments

2 days ago was my 26th birthday. may i ask for some trivia about grist the hunger tide? who is my new favorite plainswalker

Grist was designed as a quirky take on a planeswalker. She was put into Modern Horizons 2 because the first Modern Horizons had success with premiering Wrenn and Six, another untraditional planeswalker.Happy Belated Birthday!

Choosing Planeswalkers for Non-Standard Sets

New 13 Mar 2021 Asked by irkahn 56 Comments

Hello Mark! I was wondering, what is the thought process behind which PWs will be on non standard sets? Im asking this because of Serra and Wrenn and Six on Modern Horizons, don´t you think another oldwalker would have been better in Wrenn and six´s spot since that one can be printed in standard sets?

Modern Horizons was a chance to do more untraditional planeswalkers. Wren and Six is an example of that from a different category. It’s not that easy to fit Wrenn in a normal set with various story needs. And as regular readers know, there’s an audience that wants more untraditional plsneswalkers. In short, planeswalkers of the past aren’t the only Planeswalker desire Modern Horizon was delivering on.

Gatewatch Planeswalkers Duo

New 14 Nov 2019 Asked by adventmtg 54 Comments

Wrenn and Six and The Royal Scions are two very interesting Planeswalkers! Do you think it's a "when" or an "if" that we'll see two members of the gatewatch on the same planeswalker card?

I’d say more when than if, but we need a good story reason.

Standard Reprints

New 10 Aug 2019 Asked by justforaskingmaro 28 Comments

Can cards from Modern Horizons be reprinted standard legal? Obviously, Wrenn and Six or Goblin Engineer ever won't be, but are things like Defile off-limits?

If we were willing to put them in Standard, odds are they wouldn’t be in Modern Horizons. That was one of the design parameters - don’t make cards we could use in Standard sets.

Praise for Wrenn

I'm happy you're honest with us. Thank you! Also, Wrenn and Six is awesome! Please high five everyone involved in making the character and card. :)

Will do.

Humanoid Walker Compromise

New 17 Jul 2019 Asked by boltedmonkeyman-deactivated2023 72 Comments

Don't get me wrong: I love it when you do less-human walkers like Wrenn and Six, Ugin, and Karn, and I also personally don't care if we get a non-humanoid walker or not (I agree it would be mostly unpopular). But for the purposes of the discussion, it should be made very clear that Wrenn and Six, Ugin, Karn, Xenagos, Bolas, Ajani, etc. ARE humanoid. They all have roughly-human posture, features, and intelligence. Citing them as examples of non-humanoid walkers seems to misunderstand the request.

I’m not saying they’re humanoid. I’m saying nonhuman humanoids *is* the compromise we’re making to have more “less human” planeswalkers. For nonhumanoids, there are two dragons and a promise that one day we might get things like a Centaur or Sphinx. That’s the best I got for the nonhumanoid planeswalker crowd.

Nonhuman Protagonist Viability

New 17 Jul 2019 Asked by arixordragc 51 Comments

I just noticed you actually responded to the video message I sent back in April. Thanks for that), but I didn't need to be told yet again that I'm in the minority. I already knew that, and I'm okay with that. What I was trying to say was, even though most people do prefer humans, would a nonhuman protagonist even just once every few years actively make them UNhappy? I know they prefer humans, but do they HATE nonhumans such that the rest of us aren't allowed to have a hero now and then?

I feel like you just don’t want to hear what I’m saying. The data shows, for planeswalkers, that the majority don’t even like humanoids that deviate too far from humans let alone nonhumanoids. Because we realize that there is a subset that likes nonhumans, we do make planeswalkers that are clearly nonhuman, but, our compromise is we mostly stay humanoid. Cards like Wrenn and Six is us throwing a bone to the “less human” planeswalker crowd.I do feel like there is potential in the future for sapient fantasy nonhumanoid staples, things like Centaurs or Sphinxes, becoming planeswalkers (such things exist in story), but I’m skeptical of more out there things like an Ooze planeswalker or a Leviathan planeswalker happening any time soon. Us making those *and* them being the protagonist of the story is even more unlikely.I *do* understand what you want. I’m trying my best to explain why it’s unlikely to happen, at least in the near future. Our planeswalkers have a lot of responsibilities to the brand and are produced in small enough number, especially new characters, that we don’t have many options to make ones meeting a small minority demand, especially when there are so many other requests being made of them. That doesn’t mean we’ll never do it. I’m just trying to explain the reasons why we can’t “just make one”. It will happen when/if the character serves a purpose needed for the game/story/brand.

Wrenn and Six Popularity

New 17 Jul 2019 Asked by clarknes 27 Comments

Hey, so I am a huge fan of Wrenn and Six. I know it’s a bit early to tell how successful Modern Horizons was, but how do you think Wrenn has been received so far?

I haven’t seen data yet, but anecdotally very well.

Wrenn in Horizons Reasoning

New 17 Jul 2019 Asked by bassimelwakil 56 Comments

Why is Wrenn and Six in Horizons? Horizons seems a place to put dead/old walkers (like Serra) whereas Wrenn is a new character and could be put into any modern set. FYI: I like Wrenn, so please don’t read this as a complaint. :)

There are different audiences for planeswalkers. Serra was made for the Vorthos and old-timers. Wrenn and Six were made for the people that want more offbeat planeswalkers. Neither of those things are easy to do in normal Standard-legal sets, so we did them in Modern Horizons.

Wrenn's Current Status

New 16 Jul 2019 Asked by ljsky1121 38 Comments

Hi Mark! So we now have Wrenn and Six, but they came from Modern Horizons along with several long gone characters. Is Wrenn currently alive? Or is she another long gone character, like Serra? Additionally, is Wrenn related in any way to Wren's Run on Lorwyn?

I believe Wrenn is currently alive.

Wrenn and Six Dynamics

Aren’t Wrenn and Six already “two planeswalkers on a single card” ?

Wrenn is the planeswalker. If not bonded with Wrenn, Six can’t planeswalk.

Fantasy Planeswalkers

New 14 Jul 2019 Asked by nameitlater 270 Comments

I've seen you field the question a fair amount of times recently and you state market research supports the that most players like humanoid PW characters more. I don't doubt the notion, but isn't it an unnecessary slight to a seemingly-vocal subset of fans to not make a crazier, fantasy-monster PW once in a while? Throw us a bone (please)! I know these things take time and you might already be on it, but I also know some fans would be over the moon for an odd monster smart enough to be a PW.

We make crazy fantasy monsters all the time and occasionally even make them legendary creatures so they can be things like commanders. If players want to bond with crazy fantasy monsters, we have you covered.Planeswalkers are our story conduit. Things that we can make main characters in our stories, not just in the trading card game, but through other expressions like the Netflix series. We have a limited number of slots, so we need to be careful with how we use that resource. And note we have two Dragon planeswalkers, a hybrid Dryad/Treefolk planeswalker, a Golem planeswalker, a Demon planeswalker, a Minotaur planeswalker, a Merfolk planeswalker, a Goblin planeswalker, a Gorgon planeswalker, an Elf planeswalker, a Vampire planeswalker, a Werewolf planeswalker, a Leonin planeswalker, a Vedalken planeswalker, a Kor planeswalker, a Moonfolk planeswalker, a Cyborg planeswalker, a Satyr planeswalker, a Devil planeswalker and whatever the hell Ashiok is. We’re not shying away from doing crazy fantasy things, but yes we lean towards humanoids because that’s what best fills the function of what we need planeswalkers to do.And while I respond to questions like this all the time making it seem like a large pool of players wants non-humanoid planeswalkers, our data actually shows it’s a very tiny percentage. So they don’t work all that well for how we need to use them and statistically speaking they’re unpopular. We still just made Wrenn and Six. We’re not saying we’ll never do weirder stuff, but it’s something that has to come organically out of a need we have rather than just doing something to say we did it. And trust me, I know the message that most people don’t want the thing you want is frustrating to hear, but I’m trying to use this blog to be honest with all of you and explain business realities. Most players want something, we’ll make it. Some players want something, we’ll do it where we can. A few players want something, we’ll fit it in if we find a place where it makes sense, but we’re not going to force it. That’s how a multi-million dollar brand works. I’m just being brutally straight-forward.

Monstrous Planeswalkers Feedback

New 06 Jul 2019 Asked by thejimmyjosh-blog 130 Comments

Since you've said non-human planeswalkers aren't typically received super well, I'd like to say that I absolutely love Wrenn and Six and think it would be cool to see more monstrous/weird planeswalkers in the future

The more love for Wrenn and Six, the greater the chance of more.
