Wrath of God

Adjusting Protection Mechanic

New 15 Jun 2024 Asked by j-waffles 1 Comments

Has it ever been considered to add being destroyed to the list of things protection prevents? I know it changes what the mechanic does, but it is WILDLY UNINTUITIVE that something like “protection from white” doesn’t protect a creature from something like wrath of god

Most destruction is targeted, so it matches intuition. The problem with untargeted effects is there isn’t a clean way for the rules to reference them. Trust me, we’ve tried.

Defining Crime in Magic

New 26 Feb 2024 Asked by flusterfluff 55 Comments

So, if I am understanding Crime correctly. Using Healing Salve to save an opponent's creature is a crime, but bringing down the Wrath of God and destroying all creatures isn't? Spectral Searchlight wouldn't be a crime because it doesn't target, right?

Crime is defined by you targeting an opponent or their “stuff”. Wrath of God - not a crime.

Protection Rule Evolution

New 05 Aug 2023 Asked by modoqm 50 Comments

In Alpha, protection was an exemption from everything, like, a Black Knight was immune to Wrath of God for a hot second there until they clarifed the rules. The more strict rules of Revised and on could not do that so they settled on the damaged, enchanted, blocked and targeted effects. Interestingly, with today's tech (like phasing's "Treat it as it doesn't exist") they could change the rules so it works like it did originally, if they wanted to. Not sure that would play well although it'd be easier to learn.

The original version of protection made sense from a general intuitive sense, but it didn’t actual work in the rules. It was very hands-wavey. The game can’t function like that. The rules need to be very exact. We have to be able to program them for digital versions, for example. So, I don’t think there is a viable way to return to the “old way”.

Mass Effect Complexities

New 22 Jun 2023 Asked by mythmonster 38 Comments

Could Wrath of God and Damnation (minus the regeneration text) be printed into Standard, power-level and color pie wise?

I’m not sure where mass effects in Standard are supposed to sit right now.

Instant Speed Mana Cost

New 01 Dec 2022 Asked by dailynator 34 Comments

When designing a card… How much mana would you personally add to a strong sorcery to make it safe at instant speed? Something like a Wrath of God or Armageddon for example.

There’s no set amount of mana as it changes based on what the effect is. For instance, things that can affect combat become significantly more powerful as an instant than a sorcery.

Constraints on Card Naming

New 27 Dec 2021 Asked by godkingjinping 59 Comments

Does wrath of God mean a card named wrath of the gods can't be printed

We joked about it in Theros, but odds are no we wouldn’t name a card with a name that close, especially to a high profile, often played card.

Pricing White Spells

New 14 Jul 2021 Asked by eschatologue-deactivated2023090 56 Comments

could white get "Each player sacrifices each creature they control" for 2WW?

Not a play designer, but my gut it’s too good at that cost. Wrath of God is already strong and this card is stronger.

Oversimplify Nature

New 08 Apr 2021 Asked by lavaanddiamond-blog 91 Comments

Is Oversimplify a break?

It is not. The play testers tell me it is a lot less a Wrath of God than it might seem at first blush. It is a bend for what it’s worth.

Looking for Damnation Spoiler

New 22 Mar 2021 Asked by skychai 46 Comments

You (or one of the readers of this blog) wouldn't happen to have the gif of the original damnation spoiler where the wrath of god changed into it would you?

We recently looked for it for an article, but it wasn’t usable based on how it was originally created.

Regenerate and Wrath of God

Even though "regenerate" isn't evergreen, could something like Wrath of God be printed in a set without regenerate?

No.

Concerning Protection from Effects

New 15 Sep 2020 Asked by delightofthefarceur 33 Comments

On the topic of protection from wrath of God, can the rules even identify an effect that affects a permanent without targetting it?

No, that’s part of the problem.

Conditional Wrath Possibility

New 16 Feb 2020 Asked by tmdoublezero 31 Comments

Do you think white could get some sort of conditional wrath at uncommon? Like red gets pyroclasms and black gets infest veriants

Wrath of God effects are rare as it kills all (or almost all in some cases) creatures.

Protective Ability Limits

New 24 Nov 2019 Asked by petruscaex 40 Comments

Have you guys ever discussed some kind of "Protection" that allow a creature to completely ignore effects from a certain color (even global effects)?

We’ve tried for years to make an ability that protects a creature from Wrath of God to very little success. The rules have problems protecting from untargetted, non-damage based effects.

Mana Costs Verbally

New 01 Sep 2019 Asked by silencefk 24 Comments

Hi Mark, has R&D ever considered verbally saying mana costs with the generic at the end? Cancel would be "Blue, blue, and one". Wrath of God would be "White, white, and two." If honestly think this is the best way to do it. Other than relearning issues, is there any reason you can think of to NOT use this system?

Because it’s not what’s written on the card. It doesn’t help to change things and force people to mentally adjust for how it would look when actually printed.

Card Rarity Decisions

New 20 Jul 2019 Asked by kolonelnick 49 Comments

Hey mark, you stated earlier that destroying all enchantments is uncommon (back to nature comes to mind). And that made me wonder. How come that desteoying all enchantments or destroying all artifacts (shatterstorm) are possible at uncommon, but destroying all creatures (wrath of god) or destroying all lands (armageddon) are always rares?

Because they’re more impactful and we want them happening less in limited.

Sacrifice Mechanic Nuance

New 19 Jan 2019 Asked by blaze-1013 43 Comments

"White normslly doesn’t force players to sacrifice their creatures. Black usually does that." White actually has a card in standard that makes players sacrifice creatures, Slaughter the Strong.

Technically correct, but that’s much more of a Wrath of God variant.

Thoughts on Magic Bracket

New 07 Sep 2018 Asked by crickethunter 34 Comments

Have you seen the top 8 of the Magic Bracket? Would love to hear your thoughts on the 8 cards that have survived the mother of all tournament brackets. (FYI, top 8 is: Lightning bolt vs Counterspell, Wrath of God vs Ancestral Recall, Birds of Paradise vs Dark Confidant and Jace, the Mind Sculptor vs Black Lotus)

The Top 8 are all classic Magic cards. I’m curious to see which one takes it all. I’m honored that I had a hand in two of them (Dark Confidant and Jace, Mind Sculptor).

Unbeatable Creature Query

New 27 May 2018 Asked by vaatiwithblue-deactivated202403 44 Comments

For a creature to be totally unkillable in magic - would it need protection from everything?

You can still kill a creature with protection from everything with an untargetted destruction spell a la Wrath of God.

Wrath of God Reprint

New 10 Feb 2018 Asked by deepwyld 14 Comments

Even if regenerate was still evergreen, would you print Wrath of God in a core set?

Probably not.

Core Set Reprint Criteria

New 09 Feb 2018 Asked by monstersgarbage-deactivated2021 54 Comments

Since Regenerate is no longer evergreen, does that mean that Wizards can't reprint cards in core sets that incidentally mention Regenerate (Wrath of God, Incinerate, etc.)?

That’s correct.
