IP Owner's Influence on Cards

New 26 Jun 2024 Asked by gevth 9 Comments

In Universes Beyond, does the IP owner have a say in the cards themselves? Like “this character can’t be Black” or “this character should have regeneration”?

The licensee is the expert on the property, so if the card is doing something that flavorfully feels wrong, we’ll get that note. That stuff tends to push more towards the flavor, but can interact with mechanics in certain ways (such as creature type).

0 Toughness Rule Nuance

New 19 Dec 2023 Asked by khaoskrtr 36 Comments

Hi Mark, the reason why 0 toughness creatures are destroyed by a special rule instead of the typical lethal damage rule (704.5g) is *probably* because that rule can be circumvented by regeneration. As an example, if we simplified the rules as suggested, I believe Knights of the Holy Nimbus would go completely completely out of control with replacement effects. I think the game would still function but it would be really weird to have a replacement effect every single time SBA's happen.

Regeneration Renovation

New 05 Nov 2023 Asked by fucketybye 34 Comments

is there a chance that regenerate will be renovated? Tightening up keywords isnt exactly common but it's been done, and effects that do what regenerate tried to have been printed a fair amount since it was discontinued. Is that effect common enough to be keyworded?

Indestructible until end of turn has done a good job of hitting most the utility of regeneration.

Evergreen Keywords Removal

New 19 Oct 2023 Asked by su92 55 Comments

When we see an evergreen keyword stop being printed, we normally have a replacement (hexproof instead of shroud) or at least something that fills the gap (menace giving evasion to black/red instead of fear, activated indestructible for regeneration). Would you ever just remove something evergreen? Like, something that isn't worth doing anymore, without need for a replacement.

We have in the past. Banding went away and nothing like it became evergreen. I think us doing something today is a little less likely, but not impossible.

Mass Effect Complexities

New 22 Jun 2023 Asked by mythmonster 38 Comments

Could Wrath of God and Damnation (minus the regeneration text) be printed into Standard, power-level and color pie wise?

I’m not sure where mass effects in Standard are supposed to sit right now.

Regeneration Complexity

New 14 Feb 2023 Asked by nothingbutland-blog 37 Comments

Would making Regeneration a triggered ability that when this creature dies: trigger if cost is paid, remove all damage and creature stays on the battlefield tapped? Wouldn't that have solved the flavor? Then the billion removal spells that prevent Regeneration would just keep the trigger from happening.

The fix is not as simple as it seems. If it were, we would have made the change.

Creeping Inn Phasing

New 14 Dec 2022 Asked by darthvedik 28 Comments

Hey MaRo,I have a color pie question. Why does Creeping Inn have the ability to phase out? Phasing recently returned as "phase out", but why would it appear in a Black?

It’s a bend. Think if it as a variant of “gains indestructible until end of turn” (and regeneration before that).

Shield Counters vs Regeneration

Can you comment on the relationship between shield counters and regeneration? The former seem like a fixed version of the latter.

The former wasn’t inspired by the later, but there definitely is overlap in functionality.

Possible Return of 'Bury'

New 12 Nov 2021 Asked by ofhedgehogsandpumpkins 33 Comments

If or when: Using "bury" as a keyword/ability word in the future given that in early Magic the Gathering it used to be a meaningful term before it was errata'd?

Big if. Bury means “destroy and can’t be regenerated” and we don’t do regeneration any more.

Potential for Retired Abilities

New 05 Jul 2021 Asked by nothingbutland-blog 20 Comments

Would there ever be a time a Standard set might have a one of of a retired ability a singke creature with Fear, or Landwalk, Provoke, Intimidate or Regeneration? Or would that create more expectations even if announced a single one time only event style thing ?

It’s unlikely, especially in a premier set.

Removal of the 'Bury' Keyword

New 30 Jan 2021 Asked by somebodyalive-deactivated202111 36 Comments

Hi Mark! In the olden days of magic, bury used to be a keyword for destroying even if a creature could regenerate. My question is why was it removed as a keyword?

Regeneration is gone, so it doesn’t make much sense to have a keyword that cares about regeneration.

Skeleton Tribe Trivia

New 11 Dec 2020 Asked by thisisanuncreativeusername 56 Comments

I'd like to submit this birthday trivia ticket I just got at the stroke of midnight, can I get a piece of trivia for my favorite tribe (Skeletons) favorite card (Desecrated Tomb) or favorite mechanic (Banding)?

Regeneration got put in black solely because Richard loved the trope of regenerating skeletons. Happy Birthday!
