Surge

Mechanics Preferences

New 29 Apr 2024 Asked by papyrustapirus 38 Comments

I would like to see more mechanics that don't count times, I prefer Surge over Storm, and Crime over Heroic.

We have found that usually leads to better game play, so it’s become our default (which we do break at times).

Wild Magic Surge Nature

New 02 Mar 2024 Asked by j-waffles 29 Comments

Is wild magic surge a bend or break? It removes enchantments, but the fact that the replacement will be an enchantment makes me think maybe it’s okay?

We decided red can turn an enchantment into another random enchantment in your deck, although it’s not something we plan to do often.

Thanking a Designer

New 05 Sep 2023 Asked by ultra-chocolatebouquetkid 30 Comments

Hi Mark. Your pinned post of Inclusion vs Exclusion made me realize something. Eventhough Magic has added many things that I dislike, I have never been grateful for the things I do like. Can you find and high-five whoever designed my favorite card, Voice of Resurgence?

Can do.

Spell Targeting Logic

New 30 Apr 2023 Asked by blazinjsin 69 Comments

Why can't newer spells with "bad" effects target our own stuff anymore? Wild Magic Surge immediately comes to mind.

Because digital has become such a big part of Magic, we’re always conscious of misclicks.

Surge of Salvation Query

New 14 Apr 2023 Asked by unseen-demon 30 Comments

Is there any reason surge of salvation from MOM doesn't have split second? Its art not matching its card text is really triggering my OCD

Premier sets don’t use one of mechanics (meaning only one, or a small handful of cards in the set, has it) that aren’t evergreen or deciduous.

Haktos Deck Gratitude

New 01 Apr 2023 Asked by kidcincinnati 34 Comments

I run a Haktos deck that I absolutely love, and watch vigilantly for any spell I can play to protect him that doesn't target. Surge of Salvation is incredible and feels like a card made precisely for me in every respect. Please let whoever is behind it know they have my undying gratitude.

Will do.

Modular Mechanic Return

New 10 Mar 2023 Asked by asseanontv 27 Comments

Howdy Mark! Is there any chance of us seeing modular making a return in the nearish future what with the surge in more artifact creatures lately?

We’ve played around with a modified version of modular that works on any creature, not just artifact creatures, so it’s something on our mind.

Surge Mechanic Return

New 02 Mar 2023 Asked by disbarredgoose0 37 Comments

I got reminded of the Surge mechanic from Oath of the Gatewatch and was wondering, where is it on the storm scale? It's noted as being a 4 on the wiki, but that seems uncharacteristic for a mechanic we haven't seen since ~2016.

Still a 4. There are just a lot of mechanics that can return. If 80% of 4’s return within seven years (and that’s probably high), 20% still won’t appear.

Wild Magic Surge Opinion

New 10 Feb 2023 Asked by dazedanarchist1312 26 Comments

Considering Wild Magic Surge got printed, have you changed your mind about Chaos Warp being a color pie break?

I have not. Red can change an enchantment into another random enchantment.

Card Designer Inquiry

New 13 Nov 2022 Asked by aikesigne 28 Comments

Would it be possible to figure out who designed a card? I've been wondering who I have to thank for my current favorite card, Primal Surge, and would love to one day maybe find a way to have them sign a copy, knowing who they are would be a first step to that

It can vary from being easy to figure out to be nearly impossible. It depends a lot on how much it changed from its initial design.

Acorn Mechanics Legality

New 08 Aug 2022 Asked by elderdragonmaster55 37 Comments

Follow up on surgeon general commanderIs it safe to assume it’s gonna stay in acorn holo stamp (not eternal legal) all because of “Augment” part of it since clearly the aura and mutate part is all clear.

As someone else pointed out, Steamflogger Boss is eternal legal and references assembling contraptions which only exist on silver-bordered cards, so probably that’s not an issue.

Primal Surge Trivia

New 08 Aug 2022 Asked by littleorlock 38 Comments

I would like to invoke the Birthday trivia for my favorite 'win condition' Primal Surge. Thanks Maro!

I wasn’t on the design team that made this card, but my best guess the idea behind it was to do an expensive mythic rare that had the potential to do something major, so they took a green ability and just turned up the dial. The effect is nice because it allows you to build a deck around it, but serves a safety measure if you play more than one.Happy Birthday!

Eternal Acorn Rules

New 08 Aug 2022 Asked by fogity 23 Comments

Would it really be a problem for an eternal card to trigger off of an acorn mechanic (re. Surgeon General Commander)? The rules could just say that the term does not have a "tournament magic" meaning and maybe have a note about how to learn about acorn magic (in the spirit of rule 100.6b).

It might not be a problem, but I don’t definitively know that.

Surgeon General Commander Query

New 08 Aug 2022 Asked by lgosvse 33 Comments

Because Surgeon General Commander has the odd templating of "T: Add W, U, B, R, or G", I assume that means that it can't tap for mana of silver-bordered colors like pink and gold, right? Or is it equivalent to "add one mana of any color" and it's just written in a weird way?

No, it can only add those five colors.

Un-rule Card Strategy

New 20 Jul 2022 Asked by karakur1-blog 22 Comments

Un-rules question! If I use a Teacher's Pet to combine my Half-Orc, Half- with a Mer Man, does that let me draw a card from Surgeon General Commander?

I’ll say yes, draw a card.

Enchanting and Surgeon General Commander

New 09 Jul 2022 Asked by lil-cheez 29 Comments

Hi Mark, I don't know it this classifies as an "Un-question" but here we go. Surgeon General Commander makes you draw a card everytime you enchant a creature, what to my understanding is to play an aura paying its cost and targeting; but let's say the aura enters the battlefield not by casting, via Sun Titan or Illuna for example; does Surgeon care for that?

Surgeon Commander just cares that it gets enchanted. It cares not how it got enchanted. So, those still trigger the ability.

Red's Ability to Remove Enchantments

New 26 May 2022 Asked by lylethebloody 72 Comments

If Red can't remove enchantments, why Wild-Magic Surge? Sure it gives an enchantment back but you're still getting rid of the enchantment that you want to get rid of. Can't see why Chaos Warp is a huge break but this is totally OK from a Color Pie perspective.

We talked a lot about this on the Council of Colors. Red is one of two colors of polymorphing (turning creatures into a different creature). Blue gets to make the change knowing what it turns into, while red does it randomly, so you don’t know what you’ll get. We’ve decided that red can extend polymorphing into other permanent types, but that it has to still be the same card type. It also can’t miss some of the time and not replace it. So, red is allowed (on rare occasion) to polymorph an enchantment into a random other enchantment (some of the time being another copy of the same enchantment). Chaos Warp broke two of these rules. 1) It could change enchantments into non-enchantments and 2) it could whiff and not replace it.

Specifics of Watermarking

New 07 Feb 2022 Asked by frankquith 24 Comments

Un-rules question: Which of the Kamigawa soft glow, samurai and ninja treatments count as having a watermark? They all have some sort of graphic behind the text, but does that just count as being part of the frame? (Soft glow graphic can be hard to see, Surgehacker Mech is a good example though)

It has to be an actual watermark.

Timeline of Mutate Design

New 25 Jan 2022 Asked by j-waffles 40 Comments

When “surgeon general commander” was designed, did you already have mutate designed internally, or was it more of a “steamflogger boss” situation?

No, it was very much done and coming out in a month. We just thought it was a cool call forward.

Potential Kicker Evergreen

New 04 Nov 2021 Asked by jimharbor 30 Comments

Have you ever thought of making kicker or something similar evergreen as a way to fold all the various kicker set mechanics together? So for example, Dash, Awaken, Surge, Unleash etc would all use this keyword in specific ways instead of being their own keywords.

That would just make sets feel more similar.
