Legacy and Future of Milling

New 03 Jul 2024 Asked by tmplar 11 Comments

Milling!

Just learned in a podcast you're somewhat the "father" of the mill mechanic!
Was sad there was no new tools for dimir mill in MH3, are there any incoming for mill decks (not self-mill) in Duskmourne? The mechanic would be fitting with the setting...
thanks!

I can’t talk to the future, but we will be doing more mill effects, even if I can’t say when or where.I should stress that I did not invent mill. Millstone, the first card to mill cards, was in Antiquities and was designed by the East Coast Playtesters (Skaff Elias, Jim Lin, Dave Petty, and Chris Page) with help from Joel Mick.I was a champion of milling and made a lot of cards with it.

Origins of Urza

New 21 Aug 2022 Asked by lantern-armory 32 Comments

Do you know who first came up with the character of Urza?

I think Richard came up with the name. The East Coast Playtesters (Skaff Elias, Jim Lin, Dave Petty & Chris Page) came up with The Brothers’ War and the first characterization of Urza.

Drive to Work Guests

New 30 Jul 2022 Asked by es88888888 21 Comments

Just started listening to your awesome Drive to work podcast. Which members of the early early Magic testers have you had the opportunity to have on the show? From an oral history perspective it'd be awesome to have more of them on for a Magic anniversary event.

I’ve had Richard Garfield, Bill Rose, Charlie Catino, Skaff Elias, and Jim Lin on.

Trivia about Character Mishra

New 18 Jun 2020 Asked by yagozewski 40 Comments

Hello Mark, yesterday was my birthday(a little late to post, but I'll try), could I get some trivia on one of my favorite characters, Mishra?

Richard Garfield included proper names in Alpha to give the spell’s more flavor. The Antiquities design team (Skaff Elias, Jim Lin, Dave Petty, Chris Page & Joel Mick) came up with the idea of crafting a story using some of the names as the main characters. Happy Birthday!

Library Concept

New 30 Dec 2019 Asked by gophilipbowles 29 Comments

Do you find that players often think of the library as 'spells you've learned' rather than a physical stack of cards that gets smaller over time? To me, 'mill' is an intuitive name for the physical action of 'grinding' your deck down over time, in the same way that 'bounce' makes sense seen as the action of first playing and then picking up a card. Presumably Garfield had a similar association in mind when naming Millstone in the first place.

I don’t think most players really think about what exactly the library represents. And the East Coast Playtesters (Skaff Elias, Jim Lin, Dave Petty & Chris Page) made and named Millstone, not Richard.

Ice Age Playtest Origins

New 17 Feb 2018 Asked by snowskeleton 25 Comments

I recently picked up an Ice Age play test Disenchant (super thin, white both sides, that sort of thing). Who all would have played with this card during its use? Not sure where to look to find he Ice Age play test team.

The Ice Age design team was who we call the East Coast Playtesters (Skaff Elias, Jim Lin, Dave Petty and Chris Page). Ice Age is early enough that there wasn’t yet a full development process set up, so besides the design.team, I assume Richard and some very early R&D team members playtested it.

Skaff Elias Mentorship

New 04 Jan 2018 Asked by asknationsmith 37 Comments

Mark, I have amazing news. I'm a PHD student at CGU and I found out Skaff Elias (the father of the Magic Pro Tour) will be mentoring a gaming lab on campus. Really excited to try out for the creative or design and I hope to use what I learn from your design podcast to succeed! Can I get an Mark of Approval?

Skaff is a great guy. You should learn a lot from him. You get my Mark of Approval.

Fallen Empires Context

New 19 Dec 2017 Asked by jasonvorthos-blog 12 Comments

In the beginning, a lot of set were designed by playtesting team. East Coast playtester; Antiquities + Ice Age Bridge Club; Mirage + Visions Peter Adkison rpg friends; Legends + Homeland What's the context behind Fallen Empire? Was it rushed like Arabian Night? It feel so weird and different than the other sets of its time. It is also very cohesive in flavor.

Fallen Empires was designed by the East Coast Playtesters (Skaff Elias, Jim Lin, Dave Petty & Chris Page), the same design team that did Antiquities, Ice Age & Alliances.

Birthday Venser and Urza

New 28 Apr 2017 Asked by invadebelong 33 Comments

It's my birthday! Can I get some fun facts about my favourite planeswalkers Venser and Urza?

I believe when Richard made up the name Urza on card’s in Alpha (Urza’s Glasses & Urza’s Sunglasses) he didn’t have a particular character in mind. The character was created by the Antiquities design team (Skaff Elias, Jim Lin, Dave Petty, Chris Page and Joel Mick) who made the story of the Brothers War.Happy Birthday!

Elvish Spiritguide Power

New 21 Nov 2016 Asked by zoocalu 16 Comments

Hey was wondering who designed elvish spiritguide. And if u thought it was too powerful for standard.

It was designed by one of the “East Coast Playtesters” (Skaff Elias, Jim Lin, Dave Petty and Chris Page). I’m not a developer but do think it’s too good for Standard.

Thran Trivia

New 20 Jul 2016 Asked by adambarndt 38 Comments

Hey Mark! It's by birthday. Can I get some trivia on my favorite ancient race, the Thran?

The Antiquities design team (Skaff Elias, Jim Lin, Dave Petty, Chris Page & Joel Mick), who also wrote the story, liked the idea that just as we’re archeologists digging up the story of the Brother’s War, Urza and Mishra’s story starts with them digging up a civilization older than them. That’s where the Thran came from. Happy Birthday!

Spectral Chaos Explained

New 27 Oct 2015 Asked by peepeepoopoostinkybaby 84 Comments

What was Spectral Chaos?

When Magic first was coming out, Richard Garfield asked his play test groups to each design a set. The East Coast Playtesters (Skaff Elias, Jim Lin, Dave Petty & Chris Page) made a set called Ice Age that eventually became, well, Ice Age.The group Richard met through a bridge group (Bill Rose, Joel Mick, Charlie Catino, Don Felice, Howard Kahlenberg & Elliot Segal) made a set called Menagerie that eventually became the sets Mirage and Visions.A play tester named Barry Reich (who played the very first game of Magic with Richard) went out on his own and made a set called Spectral Chaos focusing on a multicolor theme (note that was before Legends existed so he had come up with multicolor on his own). When we were designing Invasion, we looked to Barry’s set and took some cards and a mechanic (Domain, codenamed “Barry’s mechanic). If you’ve ever heard of Barry’s Land, this is the Barry who is being referenced.

Phelddagrif Trivia

New 18 Jun 2015 Asked by sorin-the-mourning 46 Comments

Birthday Trivia is a thing I hear that you do, on occasion. I'm turning 28 tomorrow, June 18th, and hoping you might have something on Questing Phelddagrif, a card I tried so hard to play in Type II FNM very early in my MtG career. The opponents' responses were my favorite part. Any trivia on the original Phelddagrif would also be greatly appreciated! Keep Being Awesome, Mr. Rosewater! Thank you!

For those that don’t know Phelddagrif is an anagram of Garfield Ph.D. Whenever PR talked about Richard in the early days, they always used the Ph.D. With his name. There was an early joke among the designers that it was just a matter of time before the game got a flying purple hippo. The Eastcoast Playtesters (Skaff Elias, Jim Lin, Dave Petty & Chris Page) decided it would be funny to make the card and name it after Richard. I don’t unfortunately have much trivia about Questing Phelddagrif. Happy Birthday!

Disease-Themed Designers

New 17 May 2015 Asked by keith-cancel 19 Comments

Since we all talking about disease/illness in black. Who designed Pox and Small Pox cards?

The first Pox was made during Ice Age so it was made by some combination of Skaff Elias, Jim Lin, Dave Petty and Chris Page. Smallpox was made in Time Spiral by Aaron Forsythe and myself if I remember correctly.

Monitor Decoration

What's the box with what looks like a tiny suit on top of your monitor?

That’s my Herbert Hoover action figure. I got it as a gift from Skaff Elias.

Thallids Creator

New 15 Jan 2015 Asked by zorgrath 26 Comments

Who is the person that created the original Thallids and Saprolings? Both the mechanics and flavour?

One or more of the East Coast Playtesters (Skaff Elias, Jim Lin, Chris Page & Dave Petty).

Design Team Choices

New 10 May 2014 Asked by benkenobi18 6 Comments

MaGo over Skaff? Did Skaff trade for too much vertical leap?

Where did I choose Mark Gottlieb over Skaff Elias? Note there are categories like Rules or Design Management where that pick happens.

MtG's Mount Rushmore

New 10 May 2014 Asked by xteban 11 Comments

Whom would you put on MtG's Mount Rushmore? (besides Richard Garfield, he gets his own Andes)

That is a very difficult question. The three people that have had the biggest longterm impact on Magic have been Richard Garfield, Bill Rose and myself. The fourth person is a tougher call as there are many people who I feel could rightfully go in that slot: Skaff Elias, Mike Elliott, Randy Buehler, Aaron Forsythe, Elaine Chase. If forced, I guess I go with Aaron Forsythe.
