Subgame Format Rules

New 26 Oct 2023 Asked by cssbb21-blog 31 Comments

If I play Shahrazad or another card that creates a subgame, who determines the format of the subgame, or does it have to be the same format as the main game? If the subgame format is determined by the person who played the card that generated the subgame, could they choose a format that causes an automatic loss for everyone? For example, a commander subgame where no one's deck has 100 cards. Thank you.

A subgame is the same game as the one you were playing when the subgame was cast, using the remainder of your deck as the library in the subgame. Note some subgame cards might alter elements of the subgame, like your starting life total.

Nick Archetype Discussion

New 10 May 2023 Asked by gladidiedpoppunk 104 Comments

I think WOTC needs to acknowledge another Player Archtype, other than Johnny, Timmy, and Spike.
This player's name is Nick.
Nick is a contrarian. Who only likes things other players dislike.
Classic Nick cards:ShahrazadHumilityArmageddon Stasis
Nick loves banding, and flanking, and regenerates.
I think R&D needs to make more Nick cards

Nick is just a subset of Timmy and Tammy. R&D refers to that subtype as a Griefer.

Problematic Cards

New 31 Jan 2023 Asked by flakmaniak 40 Comments

Has there ever been some consideration of taking a few of the cards that basically don't work in the rules, ones that have persistently needed whole sections, stuff like Panglacial Wurm, and shifting them into the Falling Star/Shahrazad and such category, cards just deemed... Well, you know. Basically, "we shouldn't have printed this card and every rules-manager's job gets harder because of it, so now it's gone forever"? If a rules-manager proposed that, would they succeed?

There have been a number of calls to ban Panglacial Wurm in every format for rules reasons (aka it doesn’t kind of technically work).

Honorary Acorn Cards

Are Shahrazad, Falling Star, and Chaos Orb honorary acorn cards?

Yes.

Outside Game Effects

New 24 Sep 2022 Asked by aeonfrolicker 33 Comments

question about "outside the game" effects in un-sets like spike and photo op: generally the convention is to only have these interact with sideboards, even in limited, but is there an exception for un-cards? as far as i can tell spike is fully dead in limited if you can only grab cards you drafted with her for example

At the Unstable LRR PRR, someone used Spike to get a Shahrazad, so please have fun getting whatever.

Potential Card Updates

New 09 Apr 2022 Asked by moonsliceman 26 Comments

Great podcast about silver border / acorn, especially the point about casual play coming before the formalized rules. There are a lot of cards that are exceptionally complicated in errata in order to make them work (Shahrazad, Raging River, Camouflage), or have to be banned from vintage to stay in black border (conspiracies). Do you think its possible to errata those cards into silver border / acorn?

I believe Conspiracies would have been acorn if that technology existed at the time.

Chaos Orb on Digital Platform

I don't know how they did it, but props to the Arena team for finally getting Chaos Orb to work in digital!

Wait until you see the Shahrazad.

Acornization of Banned Cards

New 09 Dec 2021 Asked by brocolirobb 25 Comments

In the same way that silver-bordered cards from the past can be de-acorned (though there are no current plans to do so), is it possible that cards like Chaos Orb, Falling Star, or Shahrazad could be removed from the ban list and acornized? (I'm not talking likelihood, just theoretical possibility.) Still unplayable in Vintage, Legecy, etc., but a format like Commander+Acorn would then have access to them. Thanks.

Being there’s no Chaos Orb printed with an acorn and we can’t print one because of the Reserved List, it seems an odd move. Also, as with Chaos Orb, there are some play design issues.

Specifics on Shahrazad Ruling

New 21 Sep 2021 Asked by smol-ball-of-stress 45 Comments

Is it possible to get a ruling on Shahrazad? Does the sub game have to be the same format as the current game? Additionally, if it’s a game of commander or another 1v1v1v1 format does it need to remain in that style of 1v1v1v1, or can it switch to something like 2HG for speed’s sake?

The sub game is supposed to be the same format you are currently playing with all the players from the main game.

Shahrazad Effect's Color

New 23 Aug 2021 Asked by jml1218 28 Comments

Hey Mark, good Monday! Is Shahrazad effect a White effect and if not, what color would it be originally? Just curious.

Any color can have a subgame. Usually something about the subgame plays into that color. Shahrazad doesn’t really add any white-ness into the subgame, but I guess is as good a color as any to have a generic one.

Shahrazad Legendary Creature Possibility

New 01 Jun 2021 Asked by belteshazzar98 47 Comments

You said no character is off limits. Does that mean I can get a maybe on Shahrazad getting a legendary creature eventually?

I wouldn’t call it likely, but I’ll say it’s possible.

On Card's AWOL Status

New 22 May 2021 Asked by vriskanon 24 Comments

Does a card sent AWOL during a subgame (say from Shahrazad) get shuffled back into your library when you return to the main game?

Yes. It’s just AWOL for the duration of the (sub)game where it was cast.

Shahrazad's Color Alignment

New 31 Mar 2020 Asked by nadojo1 29 Comments

Is Shahrazad a color pie break for white? I know it's a black-border break, but is the effect one white should get for winning a subgame?

The effect for winning the subgame isn’t white.

Subgame Card Probability

New 04 Nov 2019 Asked by nayon7 41 Comments

What is the likelihood that a “subgame” effect like Shahrazad or Karn Liberated will ever get printed again? Separate answers for standard legal and supplementary product

Subgames are now silver border only due to tournament time constraint issues.

Goldilocks vs The Fly

New 24 Jul 2019 Asked by nedistro 51 Comments

RE: "How is riffing off of Goldilocks any different than riffing off of The Fly?" The ELD previews remind me more of cards like Shahrazad or Invisible Stalker where the combination of art and mechanics pull from a specific version of a character rather than Delver of Secrets or Kindly Stranger where the card doesn't immediately register as a specific pop culture reference, but MTG's take on the broader trope.

I forget, when exactly in the story does Goldilocks take out the bears? : )

Silver-Edge Possibilities

New 25 Apr 2018 Asked by sliver-bloglord 37 Comments

un-question: Is it theoretically possible for silver-bordered cards to use effects that are no longer considered possible in black-border, such as Shahrazad?

Absolutely. Sub-games, in particular, are now a silver border thing.

Black Border Subgame Policy

New 11 Dec 2017 Asked by zanmor 26 Comments

Are subgames that start at 1 life more feasible in black border than Shahrazad's subgame? Are we talking like the difference on Storm Scale between 9 and 10 or no?

For tournament time reasons, we have chosen not to do subgames in black border any more.

Shahrazad's Design Rationale

New 07 Jul 2017 Asked by sliver-bloglord 37 Comments

Would you say that Shahrazad's effect was a mistake?

It was more of a silver border card but far from a mistake.

Subgames and Shahrazad

New 25 Aug 2016 Asked by lgosvse 30 Comments

Do you believe that subgames were inherently a bad mechanic? Or was it just Shahrazad that was a bad card?

Sub games are hard to do in timed tournament Magic. That’s why they’ve (for now at least) been relegated to silver border.

Shahrazad Trivia

Hey Mark, it's my birthday today and I was hoping I could get some trivia about my favorite card Shahrazad!

It’s one of a small handful of cards banned but not for power reasons. Happy Birthday!
