Absence of Turtlefolks in Bloomburrow

New 23 Jul 2024 Asked by zerofourdefender 12 Comments

Despite being Archelos' home plane, I noticed a distinct lack of Turtlefolks on Bloomburrow- even including the commander set they did not even get a one-off card. Additionally, not a single art in the set depict one, and the closest we got was a Frogfolk wearing a turtle shell (in my opinion looks a little morbid to be honest). Which leads me to ask, did something happen to them?

Frogs and Turtles were the two front runners for green/blue and Frogs won out. Bloomburrow does have one Turtle.

Insights on Absorb Mechanic Designs

New 06 Jul 2024 Asked by mytheralmin 28 Comments

Hello, I heard something interesting about MH3 where you retried EVERY mechanic to see what would work with a new context or be interesting. You (WoTC) revisited many of my favorite mechanics like grandeur but didn't for probably my favorite. That mechanic is absorb, and while it has only been keyworded on one card "Lymph Sliver" it did see a continuation on my favorite card of all "Valkmira, Protector's Shield" alongside what would only a few sets later become ward. I wanted to know if you could share any insights on the designs taken with absorb or any other of your favorite mechanics? Thank you very much for your time.

I designed Lymph Sliver and absorb. If I remember correctly, I was riffing off of a shield mechanic from the Star Wars TCG. (It was a trading card game design lead by Richard Garfield that I was on the initial design team for.)

Winter Moon Card Mechanic

New 04 Jul 2024 Asked by j-waffles 6 Comments

Was it ever considered for winter moon to have the “as long as this is untapped” clause that winter orb has? I know that having it would make moon way stronger, but it feels like it would’ve added a chefs kiss to the call back. It’s not there wasn’t enough space on the card.

R&D, in general, is not a fan of artifacts that shut off when tapped, so it’s not something we tend to add to cards.

Orb Artifacts Theme

New 03 May 2024 Asked by phobias-pet-frog 44 Comments

If possible can I ask why there are several orb artifacts i.e. Winter, Torpor, Static, Mindlock, Dreams which have punishing/game stalling effects? What is it about orbs that makes them related to slower game states? Is it because they are following on the theme of Alpha's Winter Orb?

Magic has a history of something early doing something and then many cards following that flavor over the years.

With Winter Moon existing, how long until we get Blood Orb?

It’s only a matter of time. : )

Hi Mark, Could you please send out many hi-fives to whomever was involved in Winter Moon? It made this old Winter Orb player very happy.

Will do.

Borborygmos Trivia

New 15 Apr 2024 Asked by cle-guy 47 Comments

I would like to invoke the sacred rite of birthday trivia to ask for any trivia on Borborygmos?

His name is an actual English word which means “a rumbling or gurgling noise made by the movement of fluid and gas in the intestines.”Happy Birthday!

Not to be morbid, but I had assumed Tinybones was a young human.

He could be. I don’t know.

New Players' Attraction

New 06 Mar 2024 Asked by mysterybunni 71 Comments

It's maybe a bit late to add my two cents on this topic, but I want to challenge the seeming consensus that the Brother's War set failed to appeal to new players in the pursuit of hitting the nostalgia of older players. I got into Magic when BRO was the latest set, knowing nothing about Magic story except the few tidbits I would absorb from my Vorthos friend, but all I needed to hear was "it's the heroes of the modern day traveling back in time to an ancient war from the early years of the game" to think "Woah. That's cool." It was a strong hook that gave me something cool to chew on, and I think it was a uniquely good jumping-on point to this last multi-year storyline. That's just my perspective as a completely new player, so I'd imagine players who's started a few sets earlier might have found it a bit jarring to jump focus from the modern characters they were starting to get attached to into a wildly different time and status quo, but I'd nonetheless challenge the wisdom that referencing Magic's history inherently turns off new, unfranchised players. Players are already intimidating by the massive size and scope of MtG across its 30-year history, but an invitation to understand and experience some of the big events they missed does a lot more to bring people in than to shut them out.

The set didn’t do quite as well as we’d hoped, but there is much debate as to why.

Artifact Design Space

New 14 Jan 2024 Asked by mistershinyobject 32 Comments

When/if: an artifact that "turns off" when it's tapped, like howling mine or winter orb? I know it's a holdover from old rules about continuous artifacts, but I wonder if there's any potential design space with it.

If. It’s not particularly fruitful design space.

Magic Turtles, Crabs, Orbs

New 08 Dec 2023 Asked by baron-von-lucas 34 Comments

Hi Mark! Today's my birthday and I was wondering if you have any trivia to share on Turtles, Crabs or Orbs in magic? Thanks for being awesome!

We once made a Crab that had a milling flavor, and for some reason, it’s become a running joke. It’s a good example of how mechanical in-jokes happen.Happy Birthday!

Reprint Flavor Words Potential

New 22 Nov 2023 Asked by cle-guy 50 Comments

Could a reprinted card get a description ability? Like if you reprint Borborygmos Enraged could his second ability where you discard a land to deal damage get the description of “throw rocks” or something like that?

In theory, flavor words can be added or removed, as they have no actual mechanical relevance.

Magic in Pop Culture

Another Magic in pop culture, again on the Lateral podcast: on a question about other collectibles, the host brings up the story of a player who tore up a Chaos Orb to sprinkle it across the table as an example of collectibles that encourage their own destruction

Thanks for letting me know.

Common Design Complexity

New 11 Jul 2023 Asked by the8thneedle-blog 26 Comments

What’s the current outlook on designs with abilities like Stitcher’s Apprentice? Can it still exist at common, is it too “cute” in design, does it make it too easy to utilize morbid? Would love to hear your thoughts.

We tend to avoid repeatable effects at common that generate permanents.

Ability Words Flexibility

New 18 Apr 2023 Asked by noilaedi 36 Comments

Can ability words be added/removed from cards for the sake of reprints? For example, "Tragic Slip" having it's Morbid tag removed in a set where that isn't a theme, or "Bone Picker" having Morbid added to it if you want to use it in a set where that's a theme.

Ability words can be removed/added. They don’t functionally impact a card.

Streamlining Library Mechanics

New 02 Mar 2023 Asked by attracte 55 Comments

Hey Mark, have y'all talked about shortening the mechanic for looking at the top X cards of your library, picking one of a certain quality and revealing it and putting it into your hand, and then putting the rest on the bottom or graveyard? There are around 4 every set and there could be plenty of room to save.E.g. Ancient Stirrings could be "Research 4 for a colourless card" and Forbidden Alchemy could be "Research 4 for any card and the rest go to your graveyard."

It is a topic that gets discussed from time to time.

Library Arrangement Colors

New 01 Mar 2023 Asked by nothingbutland-blog 68 Comments

What color should be able to arrange its own library? Black does it with Doomsday and sort of does it with Forbidden Crypt by rurning your graveyard into your library. But shouldn't this effect really have been in Blue?

Blue and black are the colors that manipulate the library. Unstable made a card called Hot Fix that (sort of) does this in white/blue.

Once-Per-Turn Restrictions

New 15 Feb 2023 Asked by ne4782 36 Comments

I, for one, love the once-per-turn restrictions. Some of us dislike combos and prefer games to have a steady buildup, and the restriction really helps with that. Not every card needs to be able to overwhelm the opponent in a single turn, I don't need Morbid Opportunist drawing you seven cards because you had some kind of sacrifice effect.
