Infinity and Game Mechanics

New 15 Jun 2024 Asked by hyrosen-blog 5 Comments

Another fun thing about infinity - you cannot pick an integer "at random" (that is, where every possible integer may be drawn drawn with equal probability). It's not a definable concept. Which also means that you cannot shuffle an infinite deck, because that is equivalent to specifying a sequence of equally likely random positions in the infinite unshuffled deck.

I hope it’s becoming more clear why Mox Lotus and Infinity Elemental aren’t eternal legal. : )

Inquiry on Mox Lotus

New 13 Jun 2024 Asked by aalgot 7 Comments

Does mox lotus give us an amount of man equal to the amount of Whole numbers there are (which there are an infinite amount of) or equal to the amount of real numbers there are (which there are a different infinite amount of)

Does it matter from a practical sense?

Infinite Clown Tokens Scenario

New 13 Jun 2024 Asked by aalgot 5 Comments

If I have infinite clown tokens (thanks to combining mox lotus with clown car.) and Claire on the field. And then a board wipe is used followed by me discarding emrakul to shuffle my graveyard into my library. Then what happen?

Your deck has infinite clown tokens, so basically you do nothing but draw clown tokens for the rest of the game.

Unfinity Collector Requests

New 03 Oct 2022 Asked by jeffsachs 32 Comments

Hey Mark,

I want to thank you for giving Unfinity Collector Boosters a "list" slot. This is going to help me in my dream of making a fully foiled all un-card Commander deck (to get the best use of Super Secret Tech). I would like to request foil printings of: Timmy, Power Gamer; Strategy, Schmategy; Bronze Calendar; Jack-in-the-Mox; Checks and Balances; Common Courtesy; Free-for-All; Cheatyface; and Underdome.

In addition the following are really hard to get a hold of in foil and could use a reprint: Johnny, Combo Player; Who/What/When/Where/Why; Gleemax; Mox Lotus; City of Ass; Super Secret Tech.Thank you for all you've done for silly magic!

You’re welcome. I wish you the best of luck in your mission.

Mana Burn: Yurlok and Mox Lotus

New 09 Jul 2022 Asked by idan1234 24 Comments

In the oracle text for Mox Lotus, the mana burn line of the text was removed. However, if you are playing Yurlok of Scorch Thrash, it basically introduces mana burn back into the game w/o it being called mana burn. So, with both of these pieces out, do you lose life for having unspent mana, or not?

Mox Lotus wouldn’t stop it even with the rules text if it isn’t mana burn.

Mox Lotus and Gleemax Error

New 04 Dec 2020 Asked by imk1602-blog 40 Comments

I noticed an error in one of your answers. You said Mox Lotus cost 1,000,000, but it actually costs 15. Gleemax is the one that costs 1,000,000.

Yeah, I got the note and fixed the original post.

Cost to Mana Ratio

New 27 Aug 2020 Asked by krinstranger 45 Comments

Is there any positive CMC at which you could print an artifact that taps for as much mana as it costs?

Sure. Mox Lotus, from Unhinged, does it 15 (and it taps for way more than its converted mana cost).

Mox Lotus was originally printed with "You don't lose life due to mana burn." So it always worked like it does now.

Correct.

Infinity Rules

New 22 Dec 2017 Asked by infinity706 21 Comments

Don't the infinity rules shut off future un design space, though, making a spell or ability that costs infinity undesignable due to it being impossible to pay even with Mox Lotus?

Infinity, as a number, is a silver border thing.

Unstable Appreciation

New 14 Dec 2017 Asked by basketofpuppies 29 Comments

My very good friend started playing Magic in Unhinged (his first rare was Mox Lotus). He was ecstatic the day that Unstable was announced and has been blown away by it. Thank you so much for making someone so important to me so happy.

You’re welcome. Always happy to make people happy.

Infinity Handling Precedence

New 24 Nov 2017 Asked by bitsow 37 Comments

Mox Lotus's infinite mana can't run out because there's no payment that COSTS infinite mana (even X spells have to use a finite number). But with Infinity Elemental, there are ways to both add and remove infinite life from players. You can rule Infinity Elemental however you like, but Mox Lotus isn't setting a precedence for it.

No, it is. It defined how silver border treats infinity as a concept.

Silver Border Infinity

New 23 Nov 2017 Asked by stormx 44 Comments

Wouldn't it be simpler for silver border to treat infinite life as a static value that can only be gotten rid of by taking infinite damage? If I'm at 12 life, gain infinite life i'd be at 12+infinite life. If I then take infinite damage I'm back to 12. Mathematically correct? No, but why does silver border care about that? Otherwise there's no way to reduce someone with infinite life to 0 health and with infinity elemental that's not a Herculean task.

We had to definite infinity in Unhinged to deal with Mox Lotus. We are just staying consistent with that ruling.

Infinite Damage Logic

New 23 Nov 2017 Asked by kyuuki-kitsune 44 Comments

"Mark, If my opponent gains infinite life, can you kill them with infinite damage? No." Don't the rules state that any "infinite" combo requires you to denote a finite number of repetitions, making it therefore impossible to have an infinite life value in the first place (except perhaps by giving Infinity Elemental lifelink...)

Silver border rules handle infinity differently. Stems from a ruling of Unhinged’s Mox Lotus.

Rules on Infinity

We defined infinity in Unhinged for Mox Lotus. Infinity minus infinity is infinity. See FAQ for more.

Un-Masters Possibility

New 24 May 2016 Asked by mgmegadog 54 Comments

When are we getting Un-Masters, with reprints of the holiday cards, new Volkan Baga art for Mox Lotus and Jack-in-the-Mox, and updated text on cards like Spatula of the Ages?

Un-likely anytime soon.

Just Mox Lotus, but it only takes one for the rules to be made.

Mox Lotus New Symbol

New 07 Feb 2016 Asked by captainvulpes-deactivated202311 46 Comments

so what does mox lotus look like with the new colorless symbol?

It would require a new symbol. I like an infinity symbol made out of two new colorless mana symbols.

Mox Lotus Wording Fun

Couldn't you just word Mox Lotus as saying "add an infinite amount of colorless mana to your mana pool."?

Yes, but where’s the fun in that?

Mox Lotus's Mana Ability

It would, as before, require its own symbol.

Template Change

New 08 Jan 2016 Asked by dregs-of-dreaming-blog 22 Comments

Greetings Mark. So, as soon as Oath of the Gatewatch is released, all previous cards that added colorless mana will change to fit the new template: Manakin now adds {C}, Palladium Myr now adds {C}{C}, Thran Dynamo now adds {C}{C}{C}. What Will Mox Lotus add?

Infinite mana was going to need its own symbol no matter how we portray 1 colorless mana.
