Mental Misstep

Un-format Ban Lists

New 20 Oct 2018 Asked by sircaelum-deactivated20190608 33 Comments

The last ask begs another important question. Do un-formats have the same ban lists as their counterparts? Is Leovold banned in un-commander? Is Mental Misstep banned in un-modern?

Yes. Un-formats are formats with all their restrictions plus silver bordered cards.

Misstep Balancing

Would Mental Misstep have been less game breaking if it had cost 2 phyrexian mana instead?

It wasn’t an effect we should have done. Magic is not better for every color having access to counterspells.

Mental Misstep Query

im a fairly new player and i was searching on gatherer through the cards that cost phyrexian mana and i came across mental misstep, what was the thinking behind the card?

I tried to stop that card and failed. I think the thought behind it was development trying to make an exciting Phyrexian mana card.

Mental Misstep Impact

When you designed Mental Misstep, did you imagine it would have such a big impact on Vintage?

Not only did I not make it. I tried very, very hard to kill it. Unsuccessfully, obviously.

Mental Misstep Concern

I understand that it is already generally considered a mistake, but why print Mental Misstep? Countering spells doesn't seem like something "an artifact could do".

It was a mistake I tried to stop and failed.

Mental Misstep Feedback

What are your thoughts on Mental misstep? I feel like a phyrexian counter was a good idea but feel like it was poorly implemented. a U/P U/P counter with downside might have been a better idea and would have not thrashed the meta in legacy and extended.

I didn’t want us to do a counterspell as it’s a good example of something we wouldn’t do with a colorless cost.

Not a fan. Tried to stop it and failed.

Mental Misstep Ban

New 26 Nov 2014 Asked by cora-ora-ora-zone 108 Comments

Today is my birthday! Can you tell me what was the thinking that was put into mental misstep and why it banned in legacy?

“We think players will like this.” and “Oops.”

Printing Free Spells

New 26 Jan 2014 Asked by normalsebacean 10 Comments

Have you guys ever considered not printing "free" spells again or things that make spells free--like mental misstep or omniscience? I like those cards but they do seem a little unfair.

We don’t make many these days but players, like all humans, do so love free things.

Admitting Design Misjudgments

We sometimes hear about how you fought tooth and nail against something only to lose and you think it was a mistake to this day or have been proven right (re: Mental Misstep, which prompted this question), but are there any examples where you fought against something tooth and nail, were beaten, then it turned out your were totally wrong and the thing was awesome?

I tried to stop Akroma as I thought her abilities didn’t match her flavor in the story and were a bit boring for such a high profile card. I tried to get it changed, failed and she has gone on to be wildly popular.

Mental Misstep Insights

You said, "Countering things without paying any mana is very powerful." I agree. Did Mental Misstep solidify this thinking or did you know this prior to printing Mental Misstep? (I'm thinking ya'll didn't intend to make a card that would get banned from all the eternal formats before it even rotated.)

I tried very hard to keep Mental Misstep from being printed. I obviously failed in my task.

Modern Banning Philosophy

New 28 Jan 2013 Asked by swimmingforalbion 25 Comments

I know banning's not in your jurisdiction, but... the modern playerbase as whole feels that Development is going about balancing the format the wrong way. Nobody wants to play an eternal format where you're not allowed to play the powerful, iconic cards - such as Bloodbraid Elf, that was in no way broken. The format would've been better served by unbanning cards necessary to other archetypes, like mental misstep or ancestral vision.

The people who make the banning decisions do not make this decision casually or without a great deal of thought. Banning a card is the last thing we want to do. We want people to be able to play with their cards, but even worse is an environment which is unfun and players don’t want to play.

Phyrexian Mana Rules

New 31 Dec 2012 Asked by mr-good-wine 2 Comments

So my friends and I are playing Un-Commander and I am playing with the obvious choice of Richard Garfield, PH.D. as my commander. My question is, does the qualification of Phyrexian count towards mana cost? An example would be, I can't use my Gitaxian Probe to cast Mise, but I could to cast Mental Misstep.

The Phyrexian-ness of the mana does not matter for Richard Garfield PhD. You can use Gitaxian Probe to cast Mise. Remember that Richard can only change cards to other cards allowable in the format you are playing.

Free Spells Analysis

New 23 May 2012 Asked by ihititwithmyaxe 7 Comments

You lamented the Urza era "free" spells that gave you back the mana or untapped the lands. Affinity drove more players from the game than almost any other degenerate environment. Cascade bordered on being broken and dominated two formats in its hey-day. Phybrid mana cards like Mental Misstep caused problems in most formats and even made banned lists. Storm is always much better than intended. Can you talk about instances when free spells worked out well? What keeps a free spell mechanic fair?

The pitch cards from Alliances, with the poster child being Force of Will, proved to be strong but not broken. (Okay, maybe Force of Will is too strong but its done good work.)
