Magic Online

Definition of Sanctioned Play

New 13 Jul 2024 Asked by woihtmmd 5 Comments

When you say "sanctioned play is a teeny tiny percentage of Magic play" does that include officially supported digital formats on Arena and MTGO? What counts as "sanctioned play" digitally? Just tournaments with entry fees? Does the ladder count?

I was more focused on tabletop play. All digital play is sort of sanctioned.

Request for MTGO Results Publicity

New 06 Jul 2024 Asked by myfavoriteflavorisblue 6 Comments

Hey Maro, I understand this is a bit out of your wheelhouse, but you're the one I can reach! I would hugely appreciate it if MTGO results data returned to being public. If that's not feasible, I'd happily take your best guess as to why not, if applicable. Thanks for your time.

This is a guess as it’s an area outside of my expertise. If there’s too much data, formats just get “solved” much faster and there’s less time for players to explore formats.

Friendship Rekindled

New 25 May 2024 Asked by jtfr96 7 Comments

I definitely have a feel good MTG story. I was a military brat growing up and so was always on the move. I was taught to play MTG while in high school in Germany with original Innistrad and in turn taught all my friends there. The friend group drifted apart as we moved and got older, but then Covid hit and playing magic online became the norm. Me and these old friends from high school all started playing magic together online in that time, and it managed to bring the entire friend group back together. People that hadn't played since high school started joining in, and it's now a weekly tradition to hop online and play commander together despite being spread out all over the country, and brought the friend group back together together even though many of us haven't seen each other in person in 12 years.
Thank you so much for giving us this wonderful game that has kept our group together, and have a happy birthday! You deserve it!

Thanks for sharing your story.

MTGO and Clocknapper

New 16 Apr 2024 Asked by lrddphn 25 Comments

Do you think MTGO could handle Clocknapper? (Unstable card that lets you steal one part of your opponents turn). It's a paper Vintage Cube powerhouse that I think deserves a spot in the MTGO cube.

MTGO usually requires the cards to work within the rules which Clocknapper does not.

Universes Within Plans

New 16 Apr 2024 Asked by blogatog 28 Comments

Are there any plans to make a Universes Within set for mtgo. Filled with magic versions of cards from Universes Beyond sets?

Not currently. The current market research says there isn’t a large enough audience for it. We’ll keep checking in though to see if the sentiment changes.

Digital Flavor Text

New 16 Mar 2024 Asked by kreetn 38 Comments

“Q: Why do some cards not have flavor text?A: the number one reason: it doesn’t fit.”
I’d like to personally ask that Arena and MTGO’s use of digital-only cards explore this space in particular: I think every digital only card should have flavor text, AND I’d even go as far to say that EVERY card on arena and MTGO should have flavor text even if it has a cardboard counterpart that doesn’t. Let’s use the space! Give the people what they want!

The issue is someone has to write it. Having done plenty of flavor text work in my time, what you’re asking for is a lot of work, and for something few would see.

UB Deck Cohesion Issue

New 09 Mar 2024 Asked by evscfa1 60 Comments

Most of my issue with UB, particularly the commander decks, is their lack of availability on MtGO, as well as their lack of cohesion at some points. Individually, the cards are absolutely flavor wins, but as part of a precon they really don't work cohesively. Take the Timey Wimey precon for example. That deck was absolutely pulling itself in different directions by trying to be time counters and investigate, and then several cards that had nothing to do with either strategy. I would have been more satisfied had the deck been all in on the time counters, rather than trying to split the deck's strategy.Another example is the Ruinous Powers 40K precon. It had a very heavy demon theme, but it was split between demons-matter/aggro and cascade/spellslinger. Flavorfully each card is an absolute banger. But the decks as a whole really lack a real focus on one or the other. An example of UB doing well is the LotR set as a whole. It allowed for flavor wins while still keeping themes appropriate for its strategy, with blue/black/red being heavy on amassing orc armies and buffing orcs, while green/blue was focused on scrying and payoffs for scrying. Flavor wins, while still keeping a clear focus for deckbuilding.

You’re comparing apples and oranges. A preconstructed deck has different limitations than a randomized product.

Digital Implementation Issues

New 17 Feb 2024 Asked by zzedar2 30 Comments

Has a card ever been rejected, or had to be redesigned, because it would have been too hard to implement in MTGO or Arena?

We’ve not printed cards/redesigned cards because of issues in digital.

Reserved List Art Cards

New 20 Jan 2024 Asked by su92 19 Comments

There are many reserved list cards that got new illustrations in Magic Arena, Magic Online or promotional stuff (like the giant cards given in Vintage and Legacy Championships). Is it possible we get art cards of those illustrations in paper?

It’s hard to do as we’re not allowed to print Reserved List cards in paper, regardless of what art it uses.

M'Odo Reference

New 02 Oct 2023 Asked by katemetalbard 26 Comments

FYI on your Heroes of the Realms episode, M'Odo, the Gnarled Oracle's name is a reference to Magic Online's MODO acronym(Magic Online with Digital Objects) and in addition, M'Odo's ability is a reference to the MTGO(and now Arena i suppose) exclusive format Momir, where you play with a deck full of basics, can pay X to discard a card and get a token copy of any card available on the client of that MV.

Commander Draft Praise

New 05 Aug 2023 Asked by natew000 26 Comments

I just wanted to praise the people responsible for the changes to MTGO Commander draft format (1 game instead of 3, shorter clock) as well as the people responsible for the Commander Masters set design. This felt like a real game of Commander. I was able to ramp into Maelstrom Wanderer on turn 4, but the rest of the table was able to adjust, and there were enough powerful plays to keep it compelling and enough evasion and card draw to prevent it from dragging. Excellent job!

I’ll pass along the kind words.

Reserved List Art Cards

New 01 Jul 2023 Asked by su92 23 Comments

There is a lot of updated art in Magic Online and Arena for cards in the reserved list. It's a shame those will never have an actual printing. Do you think those illustrations could be printed as art cards? (not playable)

It’s a possibility.

Digital vs Tabletop Priority

New 04 Mar 2023 Asked by theuninvitedghost 46 Comments

There was a time when Arena looked like the future of Magic. I am personally thankful that is no longer the case. Has the focus on making fewer options for cards (such as draw a card vs target player draws a card) been re-evaluated yet to prioritize gameplay for paper Magic again, yet?

While digital doesn’t look like it’s going to eclipse tabletop anytime soon, there are still many millions of games played on Arena (and Magic Online). We still have to keep digital concerns in mind when deciding on rules text.

Symbols for Abilities Proposal

New 18 Feb 2023 Asked by roastedgravy 28 Comments

Has using the static, triggered, and activated ability symbols from MTGO/Arena on the cards themselves to help identify which abilities are static, triggered, or activated ever been considered?

We’re very concerned with symbol overload.

Meta Magic Un-set Idea

New 25 Jan 2023 Asked by moonsliceman 42 Comments

Rather than solely focusing on Blogatog, how about an Un-set about meta Magic discourse? Content creators, DailyMTG, Spoiler season, Blogatog, customer support, Scryfall and other online resources, MTGO and Arena bugs, etc. It's been 25 years since Unglued, there's a lot more to talk about.

All Un-sets can have some in-jokes, but a set aimed at in-jokes probably cuts off too much potential audience.

Magic Online Expertise

I don’t work on Magic Online (or Magic: The Gathering Arena), so I’m not equipped to answer questions about either.

Eternalizing Silver-Border Cards

New 11 Oct 2022 Asked by tremendouswerewolfbouquet-blog 25 Comments

With preliminary data coming out of recent MTGO leagues looking healthy for the adoption of Unfinity cards into Eternal play, does that bolster the chances of reviewing past silver-border cards for future 'eternalization'?

Could you give me more info on this?

Unfinity on MTGO

How much of the (enternal-legal) Unfinity will be available in MTGO? Or is it too early to ask?

I don’t know the answer. Some.

Unfinity on Digital Platforms

New 19 Sep 2022 Asked by lordmohses 27 Comments

Will anything from unfinity be on arena?

Some things will be on Magic Online, but nothing is currently planned for Arena. Arena does have access to the art/frames for all the full-art lands, but I don’t know if they have plans for them.

Unfinity's Presence in Arena

New 24 Jul 2022 Asked by brainslut 15 Comments

Unfinity looks infinitely fun. Will it be coming to Arena?

There are no current plans of it coming to Arena, but some of the eternal-legal cards will come to Magic Online.
