Suggestions for Batching Sea Monsters

New 17 Jun 2024 Asked by stwwilkinson 5 Comments

Hi Mark, I've seen a lot of suggestions for batching sea monsters. What about the following alternative: batch all cephalopods (octopus, squid, nautilus, kraken, cephalid), leaving out serpents and leviathans?

Less call for that. This post being the only one. : )

On Sea Monsters Grouping

So Outlaw is a grouping (Warlocks, Pirates, Rogues, Merceneries, Assassins), along with Party (Wizard, Rogue, Cleric, Warrior)If/When do we get Sea Monsters for Kraken, Leviathan, Octopus, Serpents as a grouping?

If, but small if.

Creature Type Batching

New 06 Jun 2024 Asked by ssriceboat 0 Comments

Hi Mark, Will we see more retroactively established creature type "groups" like we've seen with party and outlaws already? Looking at sea creature types that are commonly grouped, like "Leviathans, Krakens, Octopuses, Merfolk, Serpents". Can you add whale if you do? Thanks.

I assume we’ll do more creature type batching. If we did sea creatures, would people people like Whales added

Batching Sea Creatures

New 21 May 2024 Asked by ryandimiragent 0 Comments

I love batching! The recent Outlaw batch was fantastic flavor, and it got me thinking about something I’ve wondered for a while. Would it be possible to have a “sea creatures” or “sea monsters” batch? We see cards on occasion that care about various sea-related types, like Leviathans, Krakens, and Octopi, but there’s never been exactly a fixed or comprehensive list due to space. Would creating a batch for those types that could include a wider range of types such as crabs, fish, merfolk, homarids, (clamfolk?), and more be possible?

Our internal rule is to limit batches to five, and the sweet spot is three.

Trivia: Slinn Voda Commander Card

New 01 May 2024 Asked by akkorokamui15 34 Comments

Mark! My friend introduced me to your blog just in time to invoke the rite of the birthday trivia. Could I request some trivia about my commander Slinn Voda? Thanks for the interesting and entertaining blog!

Slinn Voda is another card in a series of cards we’ve been making for years that reference Krakens, Leviathans, Octopuses, and Serpents. It started with Kiora, Sovereign of the Deep. Players liked it, so we made more. Happy Birthday and welcome to the blog!

Sea Monsters Query

New 29 Mar 2024 Asked by diazepam666 54 Comments

The "parties" that have appeared in the past and now the "outlaws" are an interesting experiment!
Kiora asked when Kraken, Leviathan, Octopus, and Serpent would become "sea monsters."

Tell her it’s possible in the right set.

Creature Type Specificity

New 24 Jan 2024 Asked by jdrawer01 26 Comments

While I understand many people enjoy the KLOS batching, I appreciated the opportunity to build decks around commanders that cared about Serpents and Krakens specifically. May I request similar cards for Leviathans and Ocotopodes, please?

The more we subdivide things up the harder it becomes to make enough cards to support deck strategies. That doesn’t mean it won’t happen, but it’s a limiting factor.

Creature Type Combinations

If/when: more novel creature type combinations (such as "Dragon Detective", "Kraken Knight", or "Plant Peasant")

When.

Krakens Mythological Accuracy

New 05 Nov 2023 Asked by spartacusreturned 45 Comments

"In Hindu mythology, Rakshasas are not Cats. We’re lining up the creature types to properly capture the creature." Can we expect new Krakens to no longer appear in Theros? It is also mythologically incorrect, as they are from Norse not Greek mythology.

The word Kraken is from Norse mythology, but sea monsters are from Greek mythology. Kraken is just the word we use for all sea monsters despite the world.

Iconic Creature Alternatives

New 30 Sep 2023 Asked by faerross 34 Comments

Has Design ever considered a batch in lieu of an individual iconic creature?

I.e., what if blue's iconic was "sea monsters" (kraken/leviathan/serpent/octopus)?

It kinda of fights the goal of an iconic creature.

Iconic Types Analysis

New 29 Sep 2023 Asked by squirreling-dervish 35 Comments

I would like to second Hydra feeling less iconic, and would even say the same for Sphinx. Hydras play well in green, but flavorwise they feel like Dragon's cousin. With Sphinx, the knowledge theme works, but it feels like the 4th flying iconic. My picks would be kraken/serpent and treefolk/elemental.

We tried all those for blue and green and neither did as well as Sphinx or Hydra.

Shark Tribe Addition

New 28 Sep 2023 Asked by strymon 62 Comments

Can I please request that Shark be added to the sea creature batch? (Kraken, Leviathan, Octopus, Serpent, or Shark) I eventually want to build a shark deck for my boss - she loves sharks - but there is not a lot of intrinsic support for the tribe. I’m hoping there might be some in Bloomburrow.

The problem with “underwater” batching is there are a lot of things that could be on the list.

Birthday Thanks from Mark

New 22 Jun 2023 Asked by jsands84 26 Comments

Hello Mark, It is my birthday and I wanted to thank you for a) the typal coupling of serpents, octopuses, leviathans and krakens becoming a recurring theme. It’s led to one of my favorite, most effective decks (and an EDH deck that’s, well, getting there). And b) switching from tribal to typal, even if primarily internally. It’s very cool of you all to take that into consideration. I hope you have a good day. ^_^

I will. Happy Birthday!

Sea Monsters Theme

New 06 May 2023 Asked by finneyflame 53 Comments

Can we get an If/When for a set with "Krakens, Leviathans, Octopi, and Serpents Matter" as a prominent theme?

Prominent? Big if. There just aren’t enough slots for them, especially at common, to get the as-fan high enough.

Sea Monster Classification

New 01 May 2023 Asked by angelfish-777 36 Comments

is there a reason why Nezehal, Primal Tide isn't a leviathan? I mean, it's a giant sea monster. which makes me curious, how do you go about defining Leviathan from Kraken and Kraken from octopus?

It’s a feel thing. There’s definitely some subjectivity.

Batching Tribes Idea

New 21 Jul 2022 Asked by ryandimiragent 37 Comments

“Batching specifically refers to creating a new vocabulary word which represents the grouping of various components, most of which are existing things.”Have you considered batching tribes that have found themselves being mentioned on the same card, like undead (vampires, skeletons, and zombies) or sea monsters (krakens, serpents, octopi, etc.)?

It’s come up. We don’t tend to batch for one card, so it would need to be a larger theme.

Prospects for Creature Type Batching

New 05 Apr 2022 Asked by owenkirby 35 Comments

Hi Mark, In regards to the batching question; could we hope to see batching of creature types according their phylum? Mollusca batching for example could include octopus, squid, kraken, slugs and clamfolk. That would be really neat!

Not off the table.

We’ll get kraken on that. : )

Potential Combined Creature Type

New 20 Dec 2021 Asked by zealouskryptoniteenthusiast 37 Comments

Would you ever consider a combined creature type? For example using the creature type "Sea-Monster", and having rules text that states Sea-Monster is all of the following: Kraken, Leviathan, Octopus, and Serpent. This would make cards like Runo easier to read, and if a new creature type comes out, it would be easy to add it to the list.

When we use batching the card still has to state what the batch covers in reminder text. I’m skeptical we’d use a batch on the card type line.
