Gatewatch Sets Trivia Request

New 17 Jun 2024 Asked by ardarian 7 Comments

Mark!I invoke the sacred rite of Borthday Trivia! Can I get trivia you haven't shared before about the gatewatch sets (BFZ-WAR) please?

Haven’t shared is tough as I produce a lot of content. I pitched an early version of the story where Jace appears to everyone, including the audience, to be killed by Bolas in Hour of Devastation. He then shows up with amnesia on Ixalan. The idea was the audience would assume Jace was dead for three months.Happy Birthday!

Father-Son Bonding

New 26 May 2024 Asked by sarroth 3 Comments

Some Magic-inspired stories, all about bonding with my son, who is now 7-and-a-half: I don’t remember what I did first to get him interested in Magic, but it was probably playing with my friend Max, who taught me and my now-wife how to play - but I know Duels of the Planeswalkers on Xbox 360 helped get my son into the game with the effects and music but especially archenemy variant and a Nicol Bolas final match. In the years since then, he and I occasionally get to talking about his favorite creature types and characters, and after quite some time, we have slowly narrowed down his choices to 4: Spiders, Zombies with Liliana, Nicol Bolas, and Niv-Mizzet. Not surprisingly, two of Magic’s most common dragons in that list. I don’t know what it is with dragons but I’m glad WotC had realized their appeal so they’re prominently there for my son to enjoy, and with quite a few options so he may get a Nicol Bols dragon deck that’s much different than any dragon deck I have tried to make myselfThanks to War of the Spark, I finally created a Horde Magic deck and he loved hearing about the storyline of Amonkhet and Hour of Devastation leading up to the actual WAR set, as I explained those stories using key cards before we started the game, to establish the setting. Coincidentally, it was my son with his Gideon that ultimately dealt the final blow - no need to sacrifice himself the way it played out in our match! My son will still reference this game and it’s nearly been a year. Also since that time I learned that the classic Planeswalker webcomics had been bundled as graphic novels, so I got those and our nighttime routine for a bit was to read about Garruk’s corruption by Liliana and that build up to Rise of the Eldrazi and Mirrodin Besieged; coincidentally we finished as March of the Machine previews were going on, and my villain-loving son is now waiting for me to build a Phyrexian horde so he can battle Elesh Norn. We look forward to many more years with the game, and especially learning what comes next for some of our favorite still-active villains: Ashiok, Oko, and Tezzeret!

Thanks for sharing.

Villain Set Theme

New 01 Feb 2024 Asked by 3-slugcat-pilots-7-ornithopters 51 Comments

I still don’t quite get what a villain set is- is it like hour of devastation and all will be one focusing on the armies of the bad people, or is it something else?

Think of villains as a theme we’re building around. There are lots of tropes, archetypes, and themes to work with. Also, we’re using the existence of the omenpaths to allow us to collect famous villains from across the multiverse. Note that the Western theme also exists for us to work with.

Thunder Junction Theme

New 01 Feb 2024 Asked by oooblyjooblies96 28 Comments

You stated during & after Amonkhet Block that each set was part 'top-down Egypt' and part 'top-down Nicol Bolas', with AKH leaning heavier towards the former and HOU leaning heavier towards the latter.
With regards to Outlaws of Thunder Junction, would you say it leans heavier 'top-down Wild West', or 'top-down villain set'? Or neither? Or can't you really go into it yet?
Thanks Mark.

It’s built mechanically more like a villain set, but the flavoring leans towards the Western aesthetic.

Non-Bolas Text Role

On the card "Hour of Devastation" is the word "non-Bolas" trinket text?

Yes.

Amonkhet Reception

New 22 Aug 2023 Asked by siamkor 45 Comments

How was the Amonkhet / Hour of Devastation limited format received? I know it soured design on -1/-1 counters, but I seem to remember people really enjoying the format. If so, does that do anything for -1/-1 counters' standing in the Storm Scale?

Amonkhet block is what soured R&D on -1/-1 counters.

Reviving Player Interest

New 07 Aug 2023 Asked by followingthemagic 50 Comments

Hey Mark,My girlfriend got me into MTG around HOU, and I’ve been in love ever since (both with her and the game). She’s had some falling out after Eldraine, saying the Fantasy parts of magic really didn’t feel strong enough and characters she didn’t care about got the showcase. She’s excited beyond all levels I’ve seen in years for the return to Eldraine, Llorowyn and the new non-human set. You’ve revived something in her that’s got her coming to her first prerelease since 2020 and I thank you for that.

Glad to hear that.

Evolving Exert Mechanic

New 27 Jun 2023 Asked by natew000 44 Comments

In Amonkhet, the exert mechanic was only used for attack triggers. In Hour of Devastation, exert was also used on tap abilities. Can you tell us anything about why exert on tap abilities didn’t appear until the second set with exert?

In blocks, we liked to have the mechanics evolve over time.

Sealed Event Praise

New 06 Feb 2023 Asked by followingthemagic 17 Comments

I’d like to say this is one of the most fun sealed events I’ve been to in a while, and I’ve gone to every prerelease since HOU. I love the art, flavor is fun and terrifying, and fast gameplay really makes my heart rate go up. A+!

Happy to hear that.

Anticipation for Ixalan

New 21 Aug 2022 Asked by cascadejack 47 Comments

Hey Mark, thanks for taking us back to ixalan! I started magic with the hour of devastation prerelease, so ixalan was my first full block and i think it's still some of the best world building of any magic set. I'm really looking forward to seeing what the return is like, both for the world and the mechanics

I too am excited for you to see it.

Killing Indestructible Gods Dilemma

New 21 Mar 2022 Asked by dude1818 60 Comments

In your Drive to Work on gods, you mention that it was a mistake to give the Amonkhet gods indestructible, since they get killed in Hour of Devastation. Except they're killed by the Scorpion God, who has an activated ability that puts -1/-1 counters on creatures, and -1/-1 counters get around indestructible :)

It’s more of a larger feel issue than a “can it mechanically work” issue.

Color Change of Humility Effects

New 02 Mar 2022 Asked by ashaya 35 Comments

When did humility effects move out of white? We had a variant in Overwhelming Splendor as recently as Hour of Devastation so I'm a little surprised the effect is out of color now.

Overwriting the abilities and stats of other creatures is primary blue as blue is the main shape changing color. We did move “destroy target creature and its controller gets a token” out of that flavor space and thus out of blue (now just in white). So white can destroy your creature and give you a 1/1, but blue overwrites the creature making it a vanilla 1/1.

Character Spark Ignition

New 02 Oct 2021 Asked by arandomstringofcharacters 58 Comments

"When/If: A character we currently know having their spark ignite? I’ll say when. It seems like something we’ll do eventually." BTDT. Samut had a Creature card in Amonkhet, then sparked during in Hour of Devastation, where she had a Planeswalker card.

So did Narset. In both cases though, we made the legendary creature knowing they were becoming a planeswalker. I think the question is a character that’s known just as a legendary creature changing not just in the next set.

Request for More Named Cards

New 14 May 2021 Asked by hoondle 70 Comments

Hi, Mark! I enjoy seeing Urza's Saga join the ranks of Time Spiral, Mirrodin Besieged, and Hour of Devastation, among others. Can I request more cards named after sets (or more sets named after cards)?

R&D seems to enjoy doing it.

Chance Of Biblical Themed Set

New 14 May 2021 Asked by x12721 77 Comments

What are the odds of a biblical themed premiere set?

Low. It’s just a very emotionally charged subject matter. Hour of Devastation made some small nods towards parts of the Old Testament.

Request for Multicolor Gods

New 22 Dec 2020 Asked by masterstrix 64 Comments

Can I request more multicolor gods? I love the design of the Kaldheim gods, but with them we’ll have 5 complete cycles of mono colored gods. Only one complete cycle of 2 color plus 5 others (3 from hour of devastation and the 2 from TBD). I was hopeful Kaldheim would have our first 3-color gods.

The reason we err toward less colors on our Gods is to increase the number of different decks that can play them. Tri-colored Gods is something we can keep an eye out for when the right opportunity presents itself.

Flowstone Mechanic Update

New 02 Jan 2020 Asked by overflowchute 22 Comments

Just to confirm, the Flowstone effect would be considered a straight up break these days, right? Do you think you could rationalize it as a bend in the right set? I imagine nowadays you'd prefer to just have an effect that removes indestructibility ala Hour of Devastation for any sort of similar effect vs opponents

Red could flowstone (+N/-N) itself but probably not other creatures.

Black's Lack of Removal

New 20 Nov 2019 Asked by siamkor 36 Comments

Green (Bonds of Mortality) and Red (Hour of Devastation) have cards that remove indestructible. Why not Black? I could see it replacing the discontinued "creatures destroyed this way can't regenerate this turn."

Black already has “target creature gets -N/-N until end of turn”.

Gatewatch Spotlight

New 23 Oct 2019 Asked by szwanger 32 Comments

I feel like stories haven't spotlighted the Gatewatch, as a team, since Hour of Devastation. (Maybe a little bit in Dominaria.)

They played a pretty big role in War of the Spark.

Standard Lore Trivia

New 04 Sep 2019 Asked by szwanger 37 Comments

Trivia question for you: What was the last Standard-legal set that took place entirely on a new plane and did not include the plane's name in the set name?

Hour of Devastation.
