Goblin War Drums

Possible Standard Reprints

New 07 May 2017 Asked by ilgreven 44 Comments

Which would be more likely to see a Standard-legal set: A (functional) reprint of Goblin War Drums, or Goblin War Drums colorshifted to black?

Both are possible as those are the main two colors of Menace.

Color Shifted Possibility

Since menace is primary in black, would it be possible to get a color shifted goblin war drums?

Yes.

Keyword Slang Clarifications

New 04 Dec 2016 Asked by braveswordwielder 115 Comments

The "just keyword mill, everyone knows what it means" crowd may be interested to know that fan slang has in no way influenced other newly-keyworded abilities, as celerity (haste), Trollshroud (hexproof), spiderweb (reach), spirit link (lifelink), and goblin war drums (menace) attest. Just being the name of the first card with an ability doesn't make it the best name for that ability.

Well said.

Goblin War Drums Update

Just checked Gatherer, Goblin War Drums says "Creatures you control have menace" now. Did you just update it?

Maybe. : )Okay, no.

Goblin War Drums Menace

New 30 Sep 2016 Asked by schwartzphd-deactivated20200825 41 Comments

Why wasn't Goblin War Drums errata'd to grant menace?

I don’t know. There might be a slight mechanical difference.

Menace and Rampage Possibility

New 26 Oct 2015 Asked by deepbloop 18 Comments

with the return of goblin war drums (aka menace), is there room for rampage to return? as in menace + rampage seems pretty awesome together, and flavour-wise, rampage was a winner!

Rampage, by evidence of us not using it, is no menace. I don’t think we have any plans of bringing it back.

If goblin war drums was reprinted, would it read, "creatures you control have menace"?

Check with Tabak, but I believe so.

Goblin War Drums Errata

New 14 Jun 2015 Asked by dejzen 18 Comments

Will Goblin War Drums be errata'd to "Creatures you control have menace" with release of Origins?

I assume so. Any card that matches what Menace does (exactly) will be changed in Oracle.

Goblin War Drums Ability

New 30 Apr 2015 Asked by su92 154 Comments

Dragons of Tarkir has tons of "can't be blocked except by two or more creatures" in red. Is that something we're going to see more often in the near future?

I’m curious what you all think of the “Goblin War Drums” ability. Is this something you’d like to see more of?

Musical Instruments

How many different musical instruments have been depicted in Magic? I can only think of Didgeridoo and Goblin War Drums.

Goblin Lyre. I’m sure there’s more.

UR Creature Keyword

New 13 Jul 2013 Asked by thesquirle 3 Comments

Could the Goblin War Drums ability perhaps fit as the U/R creature keyword that's still missing? Blue has had Wind Spirit and Guille in the past...

Both blue and red have evasion like that but it’s not exactly a mechanic that we want to print constantly.

WotC Lobby Statues

New 05 Apr 2013 Asked by avatarofbro 14 Comments

I know there's a Shivan Dragon in the WotC lobby, a Prodigal Sorcerer in a meeting room, and a Jace, the Mind Sculptor somewhere else. Are there any other Magic statues laying around?

The Jace the Minsculpter is a statue we have at events not in the building. Other Magic statues in the building: Dakkon Blackblade, Goblin Grenade, the Jester from Jester’s Cap, Goblin Rocksled, Goblin King, the woman from the original Spirit Link and the goblin from Goblin War Drums. So, lots of goblins and a few others.

Red's Color Pie Slice

New 03 Aug 2012 Asked by houstofcards 4 Comments

Trying to wrap my head around reds current slice of pie. Damage, Land destruction, creature cant block this turn, Rummaging (red looting), Firebreathing, Spellcopying, Stealing temporarily, Artifact destruction, Boost in power, Haste, Intimidate, Double strike, First strike, Attacks each turn if able, fight. Am i missing anything?

Note that damage is broken up into large subsets. As Zac explained in his article today, players too often think of damage as a singular thing when it is really a tool to allow red access to a bunch of different mechanics.  Some things you’re missing - combat tricks (granting power and/or first strike, double strike or trample at instant speed), instant boosting (just power), temporary mana production, granting haste plus a power boost, making a creature only blockable by two or  ore creatures (we call it the goblin war drums ability), making a creature have to be blocked (but not specifying by who), attacking twice in a turn, spell redirection, protection from red/white/blue, getting back sorceries from the graveyard, casting instants and sorceries from the graveyard, punisher mechanics, creatures returning from grave to hand (phoenixes), token making, mountainwalk. And these are just off the top of my head. Note that some of the above are things we do infrequently. As you can see, even though red might have the smallest piece of the color pie, it’s still a pretty big piece.
