Card Function Question

New 24 Jan 2024 Asked by okniwy 64 Comments

Hey Mark. My magic group just saw Krenko's Buzzcrusher, and there are some concerns.
It doesn't say target, and that's fine and can be expected on some cards, but it also doesn't say "choose", and now there is concern that it functionally won't work as intended because it doesn't tell you to select the lands you are destroying.
I understand this is a subject outside your area of expertise, but it's driving us wild.

I went and asked play design. The lack of targeting was done on purpose to help the card deal with Lotus Field, a popular card in various formats.

Land Destruction Praise

New 23 Jan 2024 Asked by doesthewormthinkthatsthewayweall 23 Comments

As someone who likes competitively-(at least for tuned-yet-casual EDH pods)-costed land destruction in search of punishing uber-greedy manabases and making mono-colored EDH decks more worthwhile, please give high fives to all involved with Krenko's Buzzcrusher. If there was one decent card like this with a land-interacting effect per set, that'd be the dream.

High fives shall be delivered.

Green's Power to Destroy Planeswalkers

New 02 Jul 2022 Asked by trollmore 43 Comments

Using Bramblecrush as a reference, shouldn’t Green get to destroy planeswalkers? What about having creatures “fight” them?

The “destroy target non-creature permanent” effect predates planeswalkers, as we’ve been using it less specifically because of planeswalkers. Fighting planeswalkers feels more green, but it could have issues.

Bramblecrush Considerations

Is Bramblecrush a break?

No, but we do a lot less of it in green that we used to.

Card Mechanic Preferences

New 01 May 2021 Asked by honor-basquiat 27 Comments

Crushing Disappointment is one of my favorite cards from the new set (Strixhaven). I love the flavor/lore but I also really like the mechanical game play of Black drawing cards and everyone losing life rather than just the player casting the spell. Can we expect to see more of this at high rarities or cards designed for constructed?

It’s something black can do more of.

Exile Effects in Kaldheim

New 12 Jan 2021 Asked by cleverconvict 46 Comments

There seems to be a significant number of Exile effects in Kaldheim (Ravenform, Feed the Serpent, Crush the Weak, Divine Gambit). Was there a design reason that the team wanted this much Exile?

Yes, Kaldheim has a graveyard as resource theme.

Addressing Eldrazi Straggler Existence

New 16 Aug 2020 Asked by boltedmonkeyman-deactivated2023 28 Comments

The flavor texts of multiple cards, some of which were cited in the comments of the original ask, clearly indicate that Eldrazi stragglers do exist. Vestige of Emrakul and the UMA printing of Ulamog's Crusher provide decently indisputable evidence of this. As someone who very much disliked the way Eldrazi were handled in BFZ-OGW and SOI-EMN, I am glad to hear the focus is away from them, but excluding them entirely seems like a clear mistake. They are part of the world's identity now.

In spite of what characters of the world might think, Eldrazi spawns are extensions of the titans. If they are dead (or locked away in a moon), there can’t be any. I believe both flavor text comes at a time where people falsely thought they were dead.

Green/White Exiling Query

New 07 Apr 2018 Asked by myheartgoesoontz 60 Comments

Re: Green/white exiling any permanent - White can exile creatures and enchantments regularly (Angelic Edict effects) and artifacts and enchantments often (Revoke Existence effects). All it misses is lands, and green hits those on Creeping Mold/Bramblecrush. Where's the break?

You made Planeswalkers cry.

Green's Destroy Capability

New 25 Mar 2018 Asked by jesin00 33 Comments

What's the most general "destroy target" effect that's on-color for Green? I know "Beast Within" is a break, but is "Bramblecrush" on-color? Or is Green supposed to use creatures to kill Planeswalkers?

Green can destroy artifact creatures and flying creatures.

Countryside Crusher Justification

New 18 Feb 2017 Asked by kingmagni 28 Comments

Why is Countryside Crusher a red card?

It’s a giant that rewards you for destroying your own lands. It’s not the reddest card we’ve ever made but it’s safely in color pie.

Green's Mechanical Flaw

New 25 Nov 2016 Asked by fridgealarm 47 Comments

What is the mechanical weakness of Green? Green can destroy all card types (e.g. Beast Within and Bramblecrush + Rabid Bite) Green can generate mass card advantage (Collected Company, Praetor's Counsel) can tutor for lands & creatures or look and take cards from top of the deck like Black or Blue. It has efficient creatures of all sizes with trample, hexproof, deathtouch, flash, indestructible, vigilance, haste, tapping for mana, lure effect, curiosity effect, reach, infect and sometimes flying.

Green is over-reliant on its creatures. For instance, its creature removal and card drawing is tied to its creatures.

Surge Cost Clarification

New 12 Dec 2015 Asked by tvrnvs 18 Comments

Is surge going to be an additional cost or a alternate the cost? The rules text and reminder text on Crush of Tentacles seem to imply different things

Alternate cost.

Understanding Surge

New 12 Dec 2015 Asked by mikethefallen 11 Comments

Hey Mark! I just had a question about the new mechanic Surge that was previewed on Crush of Tentacles. I was a little confused on the wording so is Surge an additional or alternate cost? I assume it's an alternate cost, like overload, but the wording on the card makes it sound like an additional cost.

It’s an alternate cost.

Eldrazi Gameplay Flavor

New 18 Oct 2015 Asked by cgcbrian 46 Comments

My problem with the Eldrazi is that a lot of them don't feel like anything special. Annihilator, while it had its problems, made them feel terrifying. Put an Eldrazi Devastator next to a Plated Crusher and tell me what makes them so unique and terrifying.

Annihilator had great flavor and horrible gameplay. Magic will fail longterm if we make it super flavorful but unfun.

Is Crushing Pain still something that red can do to deal with high toughness creatures?

It’s better than “Deal 13″.

Planeswalkers and Colors

New 01 Oct 2014 Asked by trifas 51 Comments

Is any color supposed to have more or less problems with planeswalkers?

Black can destroy them directly. Red can hit them with direct damage. Green has the occasional Bramblecrush. White can Oblivion Ring them. Blue can counter them.

Planeswalker Destruction Scope

New 04 Sep 2014 Asked by szwanger 27 Comments

Isn't planeswalker destruction in both black and green? After all, Bramblecrush was as recent as M14.

Green gets “destroy target non creature permanent” but it it never gets planeswalker destruction spelled out.

Green's Land Destruction

New 07 Nov 2013 Asked by mithrandiryoda 15 Comments

Is Green now number one in land destruction? Very efficient green land destruction spells like bramblecrush and acidic slime makes me ponder the question.

Green is number two. Red is still number one.
