Black Knight

Protection Rule Evolution

New 05 Aug 2023 Asked by modoqm 50 Comments

In Alpha, protection was an exemption from everything, like, a Black Knight was immune to Wrath of God for a hot second there until they clarifed the rules. The more strict rules of Revised and on could not do that so they settled on the damaged, enchanted, blocked and targeted effects. Interestingly, with today's tech (like phasing's "Treat it as it doesn't exist") they could change the rules so it works like it did originally, if they wanted to. Not sure that would play well although it'd be easier to learn.

The original version of protection made sense from a general intuitive sense, but it didn’t actual work in the rules. It was very hands-wavey. The game can’t function like that. The rules need to be very exact. We have to be able to program them for digital versions, for example. So, I don’t think there is a viable way to return to the “old way”.

Eldraine Source Material

New 09 May 2023 Asked by paragonoflife-blog 52 Comments

I understand how lack of player knowledge on source material could be an issue (re: Eldraine), but isn’t part of the appeal of adapting said source material that players can experience it in a fresh way? Whether or not they knew it’s Arthurian origins, many players thought questing beast was neat.

A lot of Throne of Eldraine was Camelot-inspired. I believe close to half the set. That half didn’t do nearly as well in market research as the other half. A big part of the problem is Magic does knights all the time. It just doesn’t feel novel. Black Knight was pretty novel in Alpha.

Phyrexian Mirrors

New 18 Apr 2023 Asked by vyslanec 30 Comments

Hi Mark! I had a conversation with a friend about reflections in magic, like black knight and white knight. And we ended up wondering, are the Phyrexian Obliterator and Phyrexian Vindicator the phyrexian equivalent?

They are (loose) mirrors.

Color Pairs with Most Mirrors

What color pairs have the most mirrored pairs (ex. White Knight, Black Knight)?

Probably white/black followed by blue/red.

Inconsistency in Change of Rules

New 08 Aug 2021 Asked by mgmegadog 37 Comments

"Just as Sleight of Mind can’t turn a Black Knight into a Blue Knight, More or Less can’t turn Wrenn and Seven into Wrenn and Six. It only affects rules text." More or Less doesn't say "change the text" though, and this directly disagrees with one of the rulings which states "You can change power or toughness. If you change a toughness of 1 to 0, the creature will probably die." despite P/T not being part of a cards rules text.

One of my guidelines of being the Un-Rules Manager is I try very hard not to contradict black border rules when things line up. I want as much consistency between the Un and non-Un rules as possible. Sleight of Mind and Magical Hack clearly established that they can only affect rules text and not names (why you can’t Sleight a Black Knight into a Blue Knight). When changing power/toughness came up, it didn’t have a straight parallel, so I allowed it as it had a big rules application.

Use of More or Less Card

New 07 Aug 2021 Asked by presidentark 43 Comments

Un-rules question: Can I use More or Less on Wrenn and Six/seven to change that number? And if so, can I use it against an opponent with both wrenns out to make them sacrifice one due to the legend rule?

Just as Sleight of Mind can’t turn a Black Knight into a Blue Knight, More or Less can’t turn Wrenn and Seven into Wrenn and Six. It only affects rules text.

Green Knight Speculation

New 19 Jan 2020 Asked by gophilipbowles 53 Comments

If you had made Green Knight in Eldraine, is it likely it would have been a 2/2 first strike for GG with protection from blue? That would be a way outside the modern colour pie since green hasn't had first strike for decades, but would be a satisfying callback.

If we did a green knight, it would have matched what the green knight was in Arthurian lore which wouldn’t just be a callback to White Knight and Black Knight.

Magic in Other Media

I know you’re always looking for Magic references in other media. Magic is mentioned several times in both the Black Knight and the Quincy Harker series’ by John Hartness

Cool. Thanks for letting me know.

Knights in Eldraine?

Since protection is back were White Knight and Black Knight ever in the file for Eldraine?

I don’t believe so.

Alpha Reprints in Eldraine

New 23 Sep 2019 Asked by paxaqua 30 Comments

I was a bit sad to see only one Alpha reprint in Eldraine. There’s a lot of potential resonance between the sets. Were White and Black Knight ever in the card file?

Not that I know of.

Arthurian Lore Representation

New 22 Sep 2019 Asked by sniffnoy 57 Comments

Forget about Black Knight and White Knight... if this is an Arthurian set, where's Green Knight? :)

We talked a bit about the green knight. I did a lot of polling people in the office to gauge general knowledge of Arthurian lore and boy, did people not know the green knight. We did design a green knight card in vision design.

Knights in Eldraine

New 22 Sep 2019 Asked by darkx2 38 Comments

With Eldraine being so strongly themed around Knights, did you consider bringing back the iconic Black Knight and White Knight?

Protection wasn’t evergreen when we were in vision design. I’m not sure if set design considered it.

Black Knight Reference

New 13 Sep 2019 Asked by bsehlers-blog 131 Comments

Mark, is Oathsworn Knight a reference to the black knight from Monty Python? Seems too ccoincidental that he has 4 counters for 4 limbs, and can't stop attacking....

“Tis but a scratch.” : )

Enemy Mirrors Possibility

New 19 Jun 2019 Asked by beowuuf 37 Comments

Lifeforce / Deathgrip, White Knight / Black Knight, Blue Elemental Blast / Red Elemental Blast. These mirror images were nice ways of showing the colours in opposition without it being mistaken for a cycle. Would you do such things again (without colour pie violation or as severe hosing) as a way to show enemy colours?

We do enemy mirrors from time to time.

Tribal Support Limits

New 30 Sep 2017 Asked by death-burst 37 Comments

Isn't it strange that Allosaurus Rider isn't buffed by Dino Tribal, or that Black Knight isn't buffed by Horse Tribal? After all, a knight with an Indestructible Horse would be a force to be reckoned with...

Creature cards tend to focus on one creature (with the major exception being focusing on a group of all of the same type of creature). It’s partly a concentration issue and partly a “it has to fit on the typeline” issue.

Creature Type Logic

New 30 Sep 2017 Asked by arithallan-deactivated20230503 39 Comments

Any idea why Allosaurus Rider isn't a Dinosaur Elf now?

For the same reason Black Knight isn’t a Human Knight Horse. The creature refers to the rider.

Mercadian Masques Trivia

New 15 Dec 2015 Asked by qegixar-blog 85 Comments

Hi Mark! Today is my first birthday since following your blog. Would it be possible to get some trivia on the first rare I ever opened, Magistrate's Scepter? Failing that, trivia on Mercadian Masques in general? Thanks!

Mercadian Maques got its name because it was the name of the novel that went along with it (novels, at the time, had a longer lead time) and the brand team wanted the two to line up. R&D thought the spelling of Masques with a Q was going to confuse people so we tried to change it to Masks, but the book people refused to budge. In protest, R&D changed all the K’s in the card file to QU’s. So Black Knight became Blacqu Qunight. Happy Birthday!

Black First Strike

New 22 Sep 2015 Asked by mackeytwins 37 Comments

Why does black get first strike in BFZ?

Black gets first strike tertiary. It’s kind of grandfathered in from Black Knight back in Alpha. It’s not supposed to be used in large amounts.

Knights' Gameplay Primacy

Isn't it sort of a flavor fail that White Knight and Black Knight can't directly interact with each other?

Gameplay trumps flavor when in conflict.
