Steamflogger Boss Printing

New 16 Sep 2023 Asked by irlnautica 38 Comments

If silver-border and black-border cards have to be printed on separate sheets, how was Steamflogger Boss printed in Unstable? You didn't have a sheet just for it, surely?

It was printed on the land sheet, which wasn’t silver-bordered. That’s why when you got a Steamflogger Boss, it was in your land slot.

Nicol Bolas Printing

New 01 Sep 2023 Asked by tybonel13 50 Comments

The mention of how Steamflogger Boss was reprinted has me wondering, how was Nicol Bolas, the Ravager // the Arisen printed? As the only DFC in the set, did he have to go on the token sheet or something?

He was on his own sheet.

Gutter Cutting Use

New 30 Aug 2023 Asked by bobbymcbobbo 35 Comments

I understand that maybe you can't answer this question, but I figure I'll give it a go. If none of the cards in Unfinity were eternal-legal, and they had been printed with silver borders, wouldn't you need to use gutter cutting there anyway? Did Unstable and Unsanctioned use gutter cutting?

You don’t need to gutter cut if all the cards have the same border. The only black-bordered cards in Unglued, Unhinged, and Unstable was on the land sheet. (That’s where Steamflogger Boss was reprinted.)

Un-sets Reprints

New 19 Jul 2023 Asked by thunderweb 36 Comments

Can there be reprint cards in un-sets?- Un-set card reprinted in other sets (e.g. "Saw in Half" reprinted in Innistrad or Ravnica(Rakdos) set)- a card reprinted into un-sets (e.g. a Streets of New Capenna card reprinted in a crime-themed new un-set)

Any eternal legal card from Unfinity could be reprinted in another set. Un-sets can reprint cards. (See Steamflogger Boss in Unstable), but we get Un-sets so infrequently, we’d usually rather make new cards.

Future Sight Design Challenge

New 09 Feb 2023 Asked by lrddphn 49 Comments

I love the idea of a Future Sight II (if only because I'm a steamflogger boss fan). Do you think you'd be able to rattle off a whole bonus sheet of "future shifted" designs without much trouble, or is predicting the future design space a major challenge?

I’m up to the challenge.

Un-Cards Commander Status

New 08 Jan 2023 Asked by delicateturtleangel 21 Comments

Hi Mark,I know Wizards doesn't directly oversee that, but do you know why there wasn't a period where Un-Cards were Commander legal with the release of Unfinity like they were at Unstable's release?

The only Commander-legal cards in Unstable was Steamflogger Boss and the basic lands. I don’t know what period you’re referring to.

Acorn Stamp vs Silver

New 19 Dec 2022 Asked by jtddb 34 Comments

If it was possible to print a black bordered card in Unstable which was silver bordered, why wasn't it possible to print silver bordered cards in Unifinity instead of the acorn stamp ?

Steamflogger Boss was printed on the land sheet.

Acorn Mechanics Legality

New 08 Aug 2022 Asked by elderdragonmaster55 37 Comments

Follow up on surgeon general commanderIs it safe to assume it’s gonna stay in acorn holo stamp (not eternal legal) all because of “Augment” part of it since clearly the aura and mutate part is all clear.

As someone else pointed out, Steamflogger Boss is eternal legal and references assembling contraptions which only exist on silver-bordered cards, so probably that’s not an issue.

Unstable Cube Recommendations

New 21 Feb 2022 Asked by seabutcher 43 Comments

I'm building an Unstable cube. What would be your top five (or more!) recommendations for black-border cards to add to it?

#1 is Steamflogger Boss. I’d also add a bunch of die-rolling from AFR. What would others suggest?

Timeline of Mutate Design

New 25 Jan 2022 Asked by j-waffles 40 Comments

When “surgeon general commander” was designed, did you already have mutate designed internally, or was it more of a “steamflogger boss” situation?

No, it was very much done and coming out in a month. We just thought it was a cool call forward.

Will Future Sight Return?

New 04 Nov 2021 Asked by sliveremperor 47 Comments

Will we ever go back to the future? Meaning a set like future sight (not as far as having dozens of new mechanics in one set, but the theme of “this teases 15 years of Magic’s future”). I understand there are new world order concerns here, BUT, it has been so great when a card like Steamflogger Boss finally got its “real” printing or when the enchantment creatures first made a debut in Theros!

My initial pitch for Modern Horizons was Future Sight 2. I keep suggesting it, but not a lot of bites just yet.

Reprints in Unstable and Strixhaven

New 16 Sep 2021 Asked by pop-star-manager-1 43 Comments

Some sets with 100% new cards (besides basic lands) already exist. Unstable and Strixhaven. I don't count futuresighted cards as reprints. In Future Sight, they were meant to be some kind of reprints, so for me, it was their 0th print and later it was their first print.

Unstable had Steamflogger Boss and Strixhaven had a whole slot in the booster dedicated to high profile reprints (plus Grinning Ignus).

Reprinting Black Border Joke Cards

New 14 Sep 2021 Asked by meepingmerps 33 Comments

Could you reprint black border “joke” cards (storm crow, one with nothing, etc) in un-sets?

Steamflogger Boss was in Unstable, although it had to be on the land sheet.

Understanding Steamflogger Boss Ability

New 25 Jul 2021 Asked by gamma-3 36 Comments

"A black border card that said “assemble a Contraption” could get any Contraption."What I'm hearing is Steamflogger Boss allows me to assemble Unstable's contraptions in legacy

Steamflogger Boss doesn’t assemble Contraptions themself. They merely help others do it better.

Steamflogger Boss Synergy

New 25 Oct 2020 Asked by copperlinegeorge 57 Comments

What I was trying to say is that Steamflogger Boss found its place into an un-set. It has the black border even in its final release but still seems not a card meant to be seriously played in a regular format. All the time-shifted cards from Future Sight where playable on their own with some utility while hinting to new mechanics; Steamflogger Boss didn't have anything to synergize with and still hasn't to this day.

It has “Changelings get +1/+0 and haste.”

Concerns About Silver Borded Card

New 25 Oct 2020 Asked by copperlinegeorge 48 Comments

I started playing Magic in 2015, but I would've been very upset opening a Steamflogger Boss, and after all these years I would be even madder. Is it fair to make players pay for a Silver Borded card when they're actually looking for Standard utilities?

Steamflogger Boss is a black bordered card. Also, if you don’t like cards hinting at things that don’t exist, you wouldn’t have liked Future Sight.

Birthday Goblin Trivia

New 23 Oct 2020 Asked by top-hat-von-rattle-bones 65 Comments

Hello Mark, I would like to please invoke the ritual of birthday trivia! As such I would like your best Goblin fact please and thank you!

Goblin is the only creature type to appear in a different border color than every other card in the booster. The card was Steamflogger Boss in Unstable. Because it was a reprint, it had to be black border. It was put on the land sheet (the basic lands were borderless) to accomplish this. All the other sheets (where the rest of the cards came from) were silver-bordered.Happy Birthday!

Black Border and Card Sheets

New 07 Sep 2020 Asked by vaguegrant 51 Comments

"You can’t mix borders on a card sheet." Steamflogger Boss suggests you can, but I vaguely remember that Unstable's printing involved some clever tricks. How did that happen? Is this ultimately just constrained by the set's allotted budget?

Steamflogger Boss was printed on the full-art land sheet specifically because it was black border. That’s why when you got it, you didn’t get a land (only once on the sheet).

Mutate Keyword Insight

New 29 Jan 2020 Asked by barracius 112 Comments

Surgeon ~~General~~ Commander from Unsanctioned says "Whenever you enchant, augment, or mutate a creature you control." Now we know what two of those are, but not mutate. Is that a joke similar to Steamflogger Boss's contraption assembly? Does combining creatures with Grusilda count as mutating?

Mutate is a keyword you all haven’t seen yet. And fear not, we’ve learned from Steamflogger Boss to not make-up mechanics we have no intent of making.

Steamflogger Boss Intent

New 13 Oct 2019 Asked by not-nanitecircuit 65 Comments

What was the thought process behind the original printing of Steamflogger Boss?

We thought it was funny to have a future-shifted card with words that didn’t mean anything.
