Spike, Tournament Grinder

Spike's Tournament Grinder Query

New 29 Jun 2022 Asked by blood-fish-god 30 Comments

If you are playing a game where Spike, Tournament Grinder is a legal card but no other uncards are allowed, can you use the effect for any un card?

Assuming such a format exists, Spike gets cards that have been banned or restricted, not cards illegal for the format it’s being played in.

Spike Interaction with Present Arms

New 21 Jan 2022 Asked by snap138 22 Comments

Hi Mark, so sorry to hear about the Unfinity delay. We'll hold it in our hearts until we finally get to see it. I have an acorn rules question and a silver-bordered request. If my original deck is outside the game after resolving the Present Arms half of Decorated Knight, and I use Spike, Tournament Grinder to wish for a card from it, there's no instruction to shuffle it afterwards. Do I just leave it in the (now known) order, or in the spirit of fair play should I shuffle? My request is this: I'm a big fan of un-cards being black-bordered going forward, but could the Holiday cards remain silver-bordered? It would set them apart as something special and allow them to be tied together aesthetically.

Present Arms doesn’t ban nor restrict the deck, so it’s not a legal target for Spike,

Eternal Print for Card Characters

Am I right in thinking Timmy, Power Gamer, Johnny, Combo Player and Spike, Tournament Grinder could all be printed as eternal?

Timmy and Johnny probably. Spike is a lot more dangerous.

Spike and Conspiracy Cards

New 16 Nov 2021 Asked by pascal314 27 Comments

Regarding Spike, Tournament Grinder and conspiracy cards: wouldn't the last part of rule 314.3 [Conspiracy cards that aren't in the game can't be brought into the game] prevent Spike from bringing a conspiracy card into the game in the first place? Or does silver-bordered land not care about such paltry restrictions?

No, silver border does care about things like that, so I guess Spike can’t get Conspiracies.

Interactions of Spike and Conspiracy

New 15 Nov 2021 Asked by wertercatt 32 Comments

If Spike, Tournament Grinder reveals a Conspiracy, does that go into your hand or into the Command Zone where it’s actually useful

It goes to your hand because that’s where the card tells you to put it.

Silver-bordered Rules Issue

New 17 Oct 2021 Asked by kaveriniofficial 49 Comments

Silver-bordered rules question: what happens if you're not playing for ante and get an ante card (e.g. Contract from Below) with Spike, Tournament Grinder?

The card does everything it can save interact with ante as ante doesn’t exist.

Clarifying Spike's Wishing Abilities

New 19 Apr 2020 Asked by fnorfensuld 31 Comments

“Can Spike, Tournament Grinder wish for cards that were given temporary bans, in paper or otherwise?” “What counts as temporary and what counts as otherwise?” I think the reason for this ask is that Gyruda is currently banned in MTGO only due to a bug. So, can Spike wish for Gyruda?

No.

Banned Legendary Cards

New 20 Mar 2020 Asked by smuglookingbarrel6 52 Comments

According to Gatherer, all legendary cards from Legends, Homelands, and Ice Age are available to search up with Spike, Tournament Grinder. I'm really curious as to what format these cards were banned in, and why. Was Bartel Runeaxe really dominating any constructed formats?

For the first few years, all Legendary creatures were restricted (aka you could only have one in your deck).

Suspended Cards Query

Un-rules question: can Spike, Tournament Grinder tutor for cards that have been suspended in Historic, if they're neither banned nor restricted elsewhere?

Can Spike get “suspended” cards? Let me think about that one.

Unstable Gameplay Query

New 29 Nov 2019 Asked by starbloodprincess 70 Comments

If I'm playing Unstable against an opponent who has Animate Library out, and I use Spike, Tournament Grinder to bring out Oko, Thief of Crowns and turn their library into an Elk, does that take away the ability to draw from their deck? If so, does that mean they deck out?

You can’t take away the library’s libraryness.

Spike's Card Retrieval Limits

Unrules question: Can Spike, Tournament Grinder grab cards banned in Arena joke formats? For example, Poly-Raptor and a few others are banned in the Pandemonium event happening right now.

No, it must be an official ongoing format.

Silver-Bordered Card Rules

New 18 Mar 2019 Asked by gman-003 50 Comments

Judge! I have a few questions regarding some silver-bordered cards. 1) Does the library-creature put onto the battlefield by Animate Library have a name? Specifically for protection from two-worded - I *think* it's nameless since nothing explicitly names it or gives it creature types but want to check. 2) If I ban a card with Look At Me, I'm the DCI, is that card then grabbable by Spike, Tournament Grinder, for the rest of the match? Thanks in advance!

1) It is nameless.2) Yes, Spike can grab it for the duration of the match that it was banned in.

Nexus of Fate Rule

Yes. If it’s banned or restricted in any Wizards sanctioned format, Spike can get it.

Spike Clarification

" Un-Rules Manager question, if a player bans a card using Look at Me, I'm the DCI, can it be tutored for with Spike, Tournament Grinder? No, it’s banned. It can’t be played. You can’t wish for a card banned in the format." Mark, doesn't that mean Spike is a useless card? It's ability only works on banned cards.

Brain fart. For some reason, I was reading that question as wishing. Yes, Spike gets banned cards specifically. Spike should be able to get a card banned by Look at Me, I’m the DCI. My mistake. Sorry.
