Templating Mana Creation Cards

New 16 Jul 2024 Asked by eternalcheechako 2 Comments

any idea why cards that can make colorless OR colored mana (like nightshade dryad) are templated with one ability for colorless, and one for colored?

The other way to write it would be “T: Add W, U, B, R, G or C” which would make give it a five-color color identity and make the card very hard to play in Commander.

Nightshade Dryad Mana Clarification

New 05 Jun 2024 Asked by blaze-1013 1 Comments

Why does Nightshade Dryad have "T: Add C" and "T: Add one mana of any color" instead of "T: Add one mana of any type"? Was it to make clear that it can add colorless?

I assume.

Podcast Request

New 05 Nov 2023 Asked by su92 62 Comments

Can you do a podcast about effects that used to be evergreen / low on the Storm scale but now aren't (and why)? For example, old sets used to always have a take on Samite Healer, Prodigal Sorcerer, Frozen Shade, etc. sometimes with a set mechanic, but now we almost never see those, much less at low rarities.

I’ll add it to the “short” list.

Color Ability Query

New 03 Aug 2023 Asked by lover-in-blue-deactivated202404 51 Comments

Out of curiosity, would the Shade “B: This gets +1/+1 until end of turn” pump ability be in color in white or green? If so, do you think we’ll ever see it in those colors, or do you want to keep it distinctly black?

White could get it. Green tends to get the Rootwalla ability where it can activate once, but gets a larger boost.

Artifact Land Frames

New 11 Jul 2023 Asked by hedgeiii 24 Comments

Hi, Mark-The artifact land Frames from Modern Horizons II don't seem to indicate their artifactness at all. Just an opinion, but I strongly do not like that. I would easily miss that they are artifacts. Somewhat related, I still adamantly believe the old artifact border COLOR (not the old frames, just the color) is much better at being distinct from colored permanents compared to current artifact/ colorless borders. I think they are too light, and I often mistake them for white cards. Thanks for the attention, keep up the good work!

The old frame was too close to the land frame. The key is finding the right shade of silver.

Why Purple?

New 06 Jul 2023 Asked by cheesedurian2 54 Comments

In Planar Chaos, why was Purple the hypothetical 6th color instead of another color, say Orange, Brown or Pink?

Orange is the color of the mythic rarity symbol and is not too far from gold. Brown is the color of the lands frame. Pink is the combination of two existing colors, and is often thought of as a shade of red.

LotR Set Praise

New 08 Jun 2023 Asked by yoyoyoyoyoyoyoyoyoyo 30 Comments

Mark, I wanna give high fives to you and everyone who worked on the LotR. I'm not a LotR fan- no shade intended, I just find it difficult to get into the series- and yet the cards are so mechanically interesting and fun that I find myself hyped for each reveal anyway.

Thanks. One of the cool things about Universes Beyond is inspires us to create designs we might not have otherwise created.

Graveyard Order Policy

New 08 Jan 2023 Asked by j-waffles 23 Comments

Could a “graveyard order matters” card be reprinted into a format that has “graveyard order matters” in it, but not that particular card? Ex. Modern already has fossil find, so could nether shade be brought in?

We are trying to minimize them even if formats that have some.

Misunderstanding About 'Natural Artifacts'

New 22 Apr 2022 Asked by silentone2k 41 Comments

Re: confusion about "natural artifacts." I think there's some desire to find intuitive, "natural," if you'll excuse the pun, sense of boundaries to what Green is. As someone who remembers the jokes about early Magic where "everything can be done with Blue mana because a Wizard does it," it sometimes feels like the pendulum has swung to "all mana is part of Nature, so the entire Color Pie is just shades of Green." I'm not sure how to address or clear up that confusion, certainly not in an intuitive way.

I’m not saying everything is natural. I’m saying some artifacts can be a natural thing.

Excitement for New Capenna

New 06 Mar 2022 Asked by tsukaistarburst 59 Comments

With all of the people throwing shade your way I just wanna say that I'm really excited for New Capenna and I want to say especially because it made a 'set where demons rule everything' without making it particularly hellish or infernal or anything like that, which was one of my initial worries, I feel like this place really stands alone as its own world and I will enjoy doing things in it (would love a Plane Shift or an artbook!).

I’m excited for you to see more of the world. It looks really cool!

The Color Pie Balance

New 21 Oct 2021 Asked by antioch-actius 36 Comments

In light of the release of the color pie nuts and bolts (or shades and swatches in this case), I wanted to ask about a statement you made regarding the constant shifting of the color pie: Do you believe that a "perfect" balance is possible? A point at which the things that each color can do are so perfectly and evenly distributed that they no longer need to change? Or do you think that's not possible?

I think flux is built into the game as a key component.

Enchantment Creatures

New 17 Jun 2021 Asked by suigenyukiouji 52 Comments

If enchantment creatures had been as core to the game since Alpha as artifact creatures, what creature types would be typically Enchantments? Illusions? Spirits? Incarnations? Avatars? Elementals? Shades?

Most likely Illusions. It would mostly be creatures literally made of magic.

Possible Bad Guys Win

If or when: another set where in the story the bad guys win?

When. The bad guys do win from time to time. Also, there are shades of gray. Someone’s good guy could be someone else’s bad guy.

Another shade of red. : )

Creature Subtypes Consistency

New 06 Jul 2019 Asked by boberta 28 Comments

"We try to be careful about non-creature subtypes that have no support anywhere near them." and it's a real shame. it feels weird and inconsistent to distinguish horrors and nightmares or shades and spirits when neither gets supported in every set they're included in, but then turn around and not make mechanical-flavor distinctions between deserts and badlands, or different types of equipment.

Every creature has a creature type, so players are used to them being mostly flavor. It’s not true about other card types.

Shades and Black Mana

New 17 Feb 2019 Asked by plasmadraco 36 Comments

I've always been a big fan of shades, what are your opinions on them power wise and thematically, additionally, Black has always had a variety of cards like dark ritual and cabal stronghold, but they always seem to be few and far between, Shades seemed to have been designed around that specific strength of Black, also seen in cards like Crypt Ghast, What is the name of this feature and will it continue to see longterm support?

Rituals long ago moved from black to red. Black still gets the infrequent turn resource into black mana though.

Shade Lord Limitation

New 13 Jan 2019 Asked by bongette-deactivated20200305 37 Comments

Perhaps a shade lord that reduces the cost for other shades to pump by a black? Kinda like edgewalker or training grounds but for abilities that reward using similar cards

No lord can fix the problem because a tribal deck doesn’t work if the deck doesn’t work unless the lord is on the battlefield.

Shade Synergy Solution

New 12 Jan 2019 Asked by mojaksywa26 28 Comments

"The biggest problem with a Shade lord is because of the mechanical tie of Shades with self-pump, they don’t tend to work well in the same deck. Unless you play the lord, they are anti-synergistic." - Could ": Activate abilities of all Shades you control" be a solution?

Only if every Shade has that ability which would force us to cost every Shade assuming you had multiple Shades on the battlefield, which would make them suck outside of a dedicated Shade deck.

Shade Lord Concept

New 12 Jan 2019 Asked by renalcul 23 Comments

Can I get a maybe on shade lord that can just pump all shades instead of a passive buff?

The biggest problem with a Shade lord is because of the mechanical tie of Shades with self-pump, they don’t tend to work well in the same deck. Unless you play the lord, they are anti-synergistic.
