Inquiry into Bloomburrow

New 27 Jul 2024 Asked by t-a-c 3 Comments

I went to prerelease this weekend and greatly enjoyed the new set.

What I want to know is: Was Bloomburrow part of an elaborate scheme on your part to get Squirrels back in Standard?

did my first ever pre release event today and just wanted to pass on my props to everyone who designed Bloomburrow because it builds decks and plays so nicely in a sealed format

Glad you enjoyed it.

Pre-release Enthusiasm Encouragement

Hi Mark!Just letting you know that my girlfriend is very excited for Bloomburrow prerelease (she likes the fuzzy creatures, and the not fuzzy ones too), but feels like she might not have the right to get excited

Show this to her: You absolutely have the right to get excited! Our whole job is to get people to fall in love with specific cards, so please get as excited as you desire. Magic is a game for anyone who wants to play it.

First Limited at World Championships

New 26 Jul 2024 Asked by keiesu4126 6 Comments

What year and which expansion was the first limited at the World Championships?

The second ever World Championships in 1995, held in Seattle, had a limited component. It was sealed and the players were given a whole bunch of packs. I don’t know the exact mix, but I believe it included a bunch of Fourth Edition in it as Ivan Curina, from Italy, (who made the Top 8) got Channel, Instill Energy, and Colossus of Sardia which allowed him to attack with a 9/9 on turn three.

Excitement for Bloomburrow

New 24 Jul 2024 Asked by kwain-itinerant-meddler 1 Comments

Wazzzaaaaap, Mark da Shark,Just wanted to send kudos and share my excitement about so much of Bloomburrow! It's gonna be my first prerelease in a long while, since M20, I think, as well as there's so many things to love about it. I've been a big fan of Doug Beyer since Kaladesh, glad he was the lead designer on this set. Also super pumped to be getting both a revisit to the Heroic mechanic in Valiant, one of my favorite mechanics from Theros, and the amount of rabbit typal support. My Cadira commander deck is gonna go through a major redesign when the set is properly out. Hope you have a lovely day!

I’m glad you’re so excited. I can’t wait to hear all the prerelease stories.

Community Prediction on Mirrodin Besieged

New 22 Jul 2024 Asked by arcanistlupus 1 Comments

Do you have data on what people thought the outcome to Mirrodin Besieged was going to be? It was always very obvious to me that New Phyrexia was going to win out for a number of reasons, and I was curious if that was the majority opinion.

I believe more thought Phyrexia was going to win. The biggest misconception was that the Mirrodin Besieged prerelease choices were going to influence the third set in the block.

Dividing Set Themes in Drafts

New 21 Jul 2024 Asked by zackdes44 4 Comments

When/if: a single set split into two draftable packs. There is some overlap (land cycles, equipment, colorless artifacts, etc) but one pack is Team X (Bolas let's say) which is 3 different archetypes in his colors and the other packs are Team Y (Ugin let's say) which are 3 archetypes in colorless, white, black. All the cards together make a single set, but you would draft Ugin packs with Ugin packs, and then only play against players who drafted Bolas packs.

We did this in Mirrodin Besieged. The set was split in Mirran and Phyrexian, and you chose which side to play when you played in the prerelease.

Xerex on the Rabiah Scale

New 21 Jul 2024 Asked by submergedforgottencladogram 2 Comments

Mark, it's my birthday this week, and I'd like to thank y'all for timing Bloomburrow prerelease to nearly occur on my personal day of celebration, a set I have been very jazzed about since it was announced. I really love the possum druid in particular.

For my question though, where is Xerex on the Rabiah scale? I really enjoyed the glimpses of surreal Escher geometries and the alien beings that live there.

Xerex is a 9. “World that’s hard to comprehend” is not an ideal premier setting.

Availability of Creature Tokens

New 17 Jul 2024 Asked by cptawesome42 12 Comments

Any chance we could see creature tokens be more readily available? one per every few packs isn't nearly enough to actually obtain and use even half of the tokens present in sets nowadays. I'll finish a limited event, even a prerelease, and only leave with a couple tokens and it's depressing

We’re exploring options to get more tokens into players’ hands.

SDCC Preview Expectations

New 12 Jul 2024 Asked by emrachemicalromance 6 Comments

In this year SDCC are we getting a similar preview of things to come as the one we got last year?

No. It’s the weekend of Bloomburrow prerelease, so my talk is Bloomburrow focused, but I will be talking about things you don’t know about.

Concern Over Gift Mechanic

New 12 Jul 2024 Asked by bokkiedoke 4 Comments

I believe that ask about gifts being optional was asking if you believe some players will think it is NOT optional, due to the cards just saying "Gift X". I don't think the asker thought it was mandatory.

We’ll have to wait until the prerelease to see if there’s confusion. I don’t anticipate confusion.

Enthusiasm for Bloomburrow Design

New 11 Jul 2024 Asked by irlpinkiepie 5 Comments

not a question, just wanted to say that i'm a huge fan of bloomburrow and am now planning on going to my first prerelease in about a decade! the creative team absolutely knocked it out of the park, all the game design i've seen so far is stellar, and i can't wait to brew a finneas commander deck once the whole set is revealed - though i know for sure that my copy of doubling season is gonna be in there~ can't wait to see what else the magic team has in store coming up

I’’m happy you’re so excited.

Simic Guild Symbol Story

New 09 Jul 2024 Asked by ashe-cloud-phoenix 38 Comments

the simic guild symbol sticker from the Return to Ravnica prerelease guild kit has been on my family's sliding glass door for over a decade now, serving as a way to make it obvious whether it is open or closed to birds and humans alikei just though maybe you'd get a kick out of hearing that : )

I do.

Drafting in Foundations

New 01 Jul 2024 Asked by cursedsleep-blog 1 Comments

On the note of Foundations, while it is obviously primarily for Standard Constructed, is playing draft and/or Sealed with it going to be supported/possible?

It is made to be drafted.

Ante Sealed League Approach

New 15 Jun 2024 Asked by myheartgoesoontz 0 Comments

Re: Ante - There's a casual league format known as Ante Sealed League. Like a normal sealed league, you can use the same deck week to week and gradually add more packs to it, but in this variant you also get to use any cards you win. As an added bonus, you get to graffiti any card you lose to make it distinct. It's unusual, but it can be a lot of fun.

If everyone’s on board for the experience, that’s great.

Playing with Ante Cards

New 14 Jun 2024 Asked by rasalhage 6 Comments

What *are* some good ways to play with Ante cards? Do they cube well?

I played in the Ice Age prerelease (held in Toronto) and it had ante. Winning cards was fun, but losing cards was so devastating. There were people that had to sideboard into another color between games. My gut is ante wouldn’t be net fun in a cube, but if you really want to try it, do it. There’s nothing wrong with experimenting to see how things go. It’s why we playtest.

Building Kindred Style Decks

New 12 Jun 2024 Asked by datkrawg 29 Comments

my son(8yrs) has started to play commander with me and my friends and has shown quite a talent for the game once he learns how the cards in the deck interact.

He is very excited for Bloomburrow as it will be he will be attending the prerelease event with all of us but he was curious to know if the set will allow him to build a very Kindred style deck from it that will focus on the more specific animal types with support? ie otters and bats?

Each of the two-color ten draft archetypes are built around an animal, so if you just draft say Rabbits, you will have a cohesive deck. There is a bit of typal, but it is very light, meaning you’ll be able to use it for constructed, but there’s no guarantee you’ll get what you need in limited. So yes, I think he can do sort of what he wants (make a specific animal deck), but not quite how he thinks he’s going to make it. Also, it’s trickier to play just one animal in sealed versus draft.

Potential Sealed vs Draft Topic

New 11 Jun 2024 Asked by egr220 22 Comments

Here is an idea for a topic for drive to work. The differences between sealed and draft. And maybe talk about the choice behind 3 packs for draft and 6 packs for sealed.

I’ll add it to the list.
