Rampant Growth

Origin of 'Ramp'

New 28 Nov 2023 Asked by 22bebo 46 Comments

There's a Reddit thread discussing it today but I thought you (and the rest of R&D if you feel like asking) would be a good resource: does the term "ramp" come from the card Rampant Growth or was it a preexisting term for the game action of building up your mana?

My gut is the lingo comes from the card.

Cipher Design Space

New 28 Sep 2023 Asked by tescrin 26 Comments

If/When - Cipher (supplemental sets) I saw Cipher is a "Storm Scale 9" in an article from 2016. Could that be improved (especially in a supplemental product) by simply not restricting it to U/B? I could definitely see a Flame Jab variant, a Bolt variant, a Rampant Growth variant, and several others that would be sort of a "Build your own Titan" style cycle. Heck, I'd love to see an *Arcane* Cipher, so you can splice it :)

Cipher has a very small design space. Obviously, opening it to other colors gets you some more designs, but even with that it’s limited.

Logic Behind Reprints

New 12 Jul 2023 Asked by dungeonmasterryan 67 Comments

"removing draft wouldn’t allow us to reprint more cards you want. It just gives less purpose to the other cards."
This makes no sense to me. Why can't the set be like: every fetch, every signet, 10x 8 cmc commanders, all relevant rampant growth effects etc etc.
Like why do we need a reprint if colossol dreadmaw when we could get prime time? Why not have an undraftable mess of cards that are just good reprints?

Highly desired reprints are a resource that we have to allocate across our various products. Any one set only gets so many.

Black Rampant Growth

New 08 Jul 2023 Asked by battle-of-wits 31 Comments

Since black is allowed to fetch swamps, if or when, black rampant growth for swamp only?

It won’t get it that efficiently. We don’t even do Rampant Growth in green anymore in premier sets.

White's Ramp Possibilities

New 23 Nov 2020 Asked by jjustin1379 35 Comments

Can white get ramp with the caveat that it has to be behind or equal in lands like rampant growth but not if its ahead in mana?

White can get ramp in a number of ways, but always for a plains.

Request for More Ramp Cards

New 03 Jun 2020 Asked by extendohugs 50 Comments

Hi Mark, I really love Red/Green ramp decks, but it seems that that particular color pair get so few ramp cards. Could we get more? Maybe someday we could get a Rampant Growth for RG that does a little extra?

I’ll keep it in mind.

Color Identity in White

New 05 Apr 2020 Asked by kream45 66 Comments

Verge Rangers is a worse Courser of Kruphix, Cartographer’s Hawk is a worse rampant growth. Is White's new color identity to be worse than anything green does?

White is primary in some effects and secondary in others. Yes, it does its secondary effects worse than the primary color. That’s why it’s secondary. : )

White vs Green Ramp

New 04 Jan 2020 Asked by yakob66 23 Comments

Hi Mark! Over time I've noticed that green as a color can ramp through both instant/sorcery (cultivate, rampant growth, etc.) and enchantments (wild growth, burgeoning, dictate of karametra, etc.) Would there be serious breaks to the pie if white was able to ramp via enchantments at all?

Green is the ramp color. We let white do some mana catch-up, but white is about creature ramp not mana ramp.

Rampant Growth Power

New 14 Dec 2017 Asked by borisdevilboon 36 Comments

Is Rampant Growth considered overpowered? Selfie Preservation is the latest in a line of cards that are strictly worse.

R&D has pulled back a bit from Rampant Growth. While we might one day push in that area, currently Rampant Growth is over the line.

Podcast Ideas to Cards

New 25 May 2017 Asked by jdwaste 21 Comments

Started listening to Drive to Work recently during my own commute; loving it so far! I just finished the episode about Gold Card designs and the Rampant Growth + Spitting Earth card example you came up with at the end seemed like a really cool design! Have you ever ended up actually making any of the cards you've come up with as design examples on the podcast?

I can’t write them down so I forget them.

Lands Playing Mechanics

New 07 Feb 2016 Asked by zok72 24 Comments

Does the fact that lands don't have costs prevent them from having alternate costs (like a miracle cost for example)? I ask because I am wondering how land-based alternatives to rampant growth would work?

Changing with how lands are played is messing with dynamite metaphorically. It has not historically gone well.

Tutoring at Common

New 05 Oct 2015 Asked by the-batlord 28 Comments

"We don't tend to do tutoring at common these days" Would Rampant Growth and similar cards be the exception? Both Natural Connection and Sylvan Scrying were in Battle For Zendikar?

Basic land tutoring is the one exception. Fair point.

Mana Ramp Spell

Is a two mana land ramp spell (rampant growth) too good for standard?

Not a developer but maybe.

Red's Temporary Advantage

New 30 Sep 2014 Asked by emersonesq 38 Comments

Going with red's "temporary card advantage" and adoption of rituals, could red get a Rampant Growth ability that sacrifices the land at end of turn?

Colorpiewise yes, but I’m not sure the effect is worth the shuffling.

Blue's Limitations

New 30 Sep 2014 Asked by danny0 152 Comments

That list you gave about what blue can and cant do to permanents highlights a lot of the frustration people have with blue, I think. Sure it cant get rid of permanents, but there are 8 other different things it can do about them that are just as effective. Red on the other hand, has enchantments as a weakness and it cant do a single thing about them. In my opinion, blues weakness is insignificant. it can get rid of things in other ways(bounce/counter, polymorph, freeze etc) all just as effective

Blue cannot do direct damage. Blue cannot heal. Blue cannot giant growth. Blue cannot rampant growth. Blue cannot reanimate. Blue cannot gain life. Blue cannot grant or have haste, first strike, vigilance, lifelink, reach or deathtouch. There are all sorts of things blue cannot do.

Green Mana Rituals

New 12 Dec 2013 Asked by doopboopdoop 14 Comments

Can mono green get rituals?

No, green gets permanent mana like elves and Rampant Growth. Red gets the one-shot mana.

Color Shifted Llanowar Elves

New 04 Sep 2013 Asked by endgamer31 10 Comments

If you were to ever print a color shifted llanowar elves what color would it hypothetically be? And would you ever consider actually doing that? Or would that break color pie too much

If I had to put it in a second color, I guess I’d choose black. Same reason I chose black second for the Rampant Growth question a few weeks back.

Farseek vs Rampant Growth

New 26 Oct 2012 Asked by badshrooms122-blog 6 Comments

Why was Farseek made when Rampant Growth exists?

1) We make cards of varying power levels meaning that there is going to exist cards that are just better than other cards. That’s how a trading card game works. 2) Farseek can get “shocklands” (the returning dual lands in Return to Ravnica block from the original Ravnica block) so in no way is it worse than Rampant Growth. It’s different and in many circumstances better.

Instant Speed Ramp

New 31 Aug 2012 Asked by musings-on-the-mundane-blog 5 Comments

As a green mage, I've always wondered: why is there so little instant speed ramp? Harrow and evolution charm are the only real recent examples. What is the problem with an instant speed rampant growth, or something similar?

Certain effects, like mana ramping and discard, default to sorceries because we feel they play better as sorceries.

Shuffling in Design

New 07 Jul 2012 Asked by topiotts 1 Comments

Does the push for less shuffling at lower rarities make cards like Sakura-Tribe Elder and Rampant Growth harder to make it to print? Or are those considered acceptable due to only one shuffle?

It helps that they only have one shuffle, but yes the move to cut back on shuffling does impact those types of cards.
