Hey Maro,If/when functional reprint of Serra angel into blue with a relevant creature type. Just realized now that blue has vigilance and flying.

Been there done that. (Okay, it was Planar Chaos, but we could reprint it.)

Color Alternative in Planar Chaos

New 21 Jul 2024 Asked by painfully-bisexual 2 Comments

Hi Mark! I'm looking at Planar Chaos, and it's got me wondering: Could the rules handle the line of text "choose a color other than purple"?

My guess is no. Purple would have to be defined.

Token Existence

What are your thoughts on creating a card that allows tokens to exist in other zones? Could this be a possible feature in some kind of revamped Planar Chaos type set?

I made it in the one place I could:

Disparity in Spirit Guide Rarity

The Planar Chaos timeshifted sheet did some wonky things to rarities.

Community Gratitude and Madness Effects

New 21 Jun 2024 Asked by sweetheart-haely 6 Comments

Not exactly a question, just sending my appreciation that you take the time to respond to things and engage with the community. Love ya.
But for an actual question, I grew up on that one red black planar chaos deck with the madness effects. How you guys feel about those?

Thanks. It’s hard not to look back on Planar Chais things with a little bit of trepidation.

Alternate Timelines Set Proposal

New 01 Jun 2024 Asked by skagerrakgodofdarkness 40 Comments

Can I request a set filled with alternate timelines? Not planar chaos bc the color pie would remain intact, just a place we can see this creative aspect

It’s a common request.

Planeswalker 'What If' Cards

New 29 May 2024 Asked by mladjo2505 36 Comments

With a lot of cards being what ifs in MH3 is there any chance we see a "what if" cards of Planeswalkers if their lives turned out different, ie. a white healer Liliana etc in a future set?

I don’t believe the MH3 cards are “what if”, not in the way Planar Chaos was. That said, “what if” is a popular request theme.

Non-canon Cards Labeling

New 23 May 2024 Asked by jimmycomments 5 Comments

Hi Mark - I realise this isn't hugely likely as the horse has already bolted but I think it would be cool if the non-canon cards in supplemental sets were marked in some way, such as with the Planar Chaos frames. I'm guessing this is one of those things that's more complicated than it sounds because it would work across teams or something like that but I think it would be cool.

It’s tricky. Even in Planar Chaos, there is a lot of alternate reality cards not in the timeshifted frame.

Quad-Color Commander Design

New 05 May 2024 Asked by between-panels-blog 11 Comments

Hello!

Last time I wrote, I asked about Planar Chaos, and whether design might go back to something like that with the color pie. Thank you for your response. I can appreciate how it was a novel idea back then, but you do it more now in small ways over time.

My next question also has to do with color.

Like a lot of people, I love commander. I've created a challenge for myself. I'm trying to build a deck in every color combination.

I finally finished colorless, which was a challenge I've been afraid of since I started playing in Alara. Now I'm looking at four color commanders.

I have Omnath. I love Omnath. Landfall's been a favorite, since Zendikar is close to my heart.

And oh. There's Atraxa. Atraxa excites me. I think I'll focus her on poison counters.

But then there's the other combinations. After the Nephilim in Guildpact, most call them Glint, (no white) Dune, (no blue) and Witch (no red).

I see Breya, Saskia, and Yidris. They're awesome cards, and Yidris excites me somewhat. But it feels like a very tiny box that's been built many, many times before.

And those three cards are really it for those three color groupings. There's a whole bunch of representation for WURG especially with Doctor Who UB, and WUBG has the two Atraxa. But the other three don't get much.

Partner is an option I've considered. But at a glance, it seems a bit forced.

Do you think design will do more with the quad-color groupings? Would a set like Alara or Tarkir be possible, but with quad-color tribes? Or does that overcomplicate design too much?

Four-color legendary cards are in a weird place. We don’t want to make them such that people are just using them to play more colors in Commander, so it means we have to be very focused in what they’re doing, and finding a home for such a design is tricky.

Planar Chaos Reflections

New 04 May 2024 Asked by alakasizca 60 Comments

Hi Mark! Hopefully third time is a charm :) While reading the preview columns for Planar Chaos, I saw you wrote this: "Every choice we make has a firm grounding in the philosophical underpinnings of the colors". However, some cards clearly don't have that "firm grounding". Do you remember what made you think that Harmonize was green or Melancholy was black? It surprises me because it's so obviously not the case. Did you maybe get too carried away by the conceptual side of your idea? Thanks!

Sometimes when you mess in space you’ve never messed in before, you can have problems in understanding the scope of what you’re doing. Every effect we shifted colors in, we thought a lot about, and it was based on precedent, but sometimes we missed the forest for the trees, as the expression goes.Take Harmonize. It’s not as if green didn’t have access to card draw. What we missed is how shifting it away from being creature dependent fundamentally shifted how it got used, and allowed green to fill in a weakness in a way that was subtler than we understood at the time.Look, there’s a reason “hindsight is 20/20” in an expression. There are a lot of decisions that seem glaringly wrong looking back, but it often comes with knowledge you simply didn’t have at the time. Planar Chaos taught us the danger of playing with fundamentals. They’re a lot harder to work with than it seems at first blush.

Hypothetical Sixth Color

New 04 May 2024 Asked by brazenautomaton 16 Comments

You've said there's no room to add a sixth color. If, hypothetically, you absolutely had to add one, do you think the existing colors have enough depth that you could steal some mechanics from each color to make a new one, but still leave each existing color feeling like it has enough to it?

We tried that experiment, sort of, with purple in Planar Chaos design. And there we had the alternate reality, reworking of the color pie as a tool, and it was still too difficult.

Frame Preference Poll

"but was wondering if we could see the Future Sight frame again.""It’s possible. Its fans are just an even narrower group."This got me thinking, which is a narrower group: Future Sight frame fans or Planar Chaos Frame fans?

A fine question.

Sixth Color Concept

New 20 Apr 2024 Asked by theadonalsium 35 Comments

Have you ever thought about doing a sixth color in an un-set, or in the play test cards?

The closest we came to actually doing a sixth color was Planar Chaos, the set about an alternate reality version of Magic. A sixth color both takes a lot of architecture and is hard to fill up as every ability is already assigned to colors.

Parallel Multiverses

"The only parallel multiverse we know of is the Un-iverse. We have yet to see parallel universes." I think you've forgotten about Planar Chaos, where we saw exactly that.

A fine point. I don’t know where Planar Chaos represents.

Reworking Planar Chaos

New 30 Mar 2024 Asked by msloper 15 Comments

If you were given the chance to go back and redo Planar Chaos, would you still choose to represent the “present” theme as alternate reality? If yes, how might you do so without so many color pie breaks? If no, how would you represent “the present” differently?

In haven’t spent a lot of time thinking about it. It needed to be present, and alternate present is a cool way to do it. Maybe there are other options.

Planar Chaos Possibility

New 20 Mar 2024 Asked by between-panels-blog 32 Comments

Along similar lines, do you see a possibility for more Planar Chaos fun in Magic's future? Seeing colors do things they don't usually do is always entertaining. I'm especially enjoying looking at older sets and seeing how the color pie "used" to work, before the rules were more formalized and documented (cards like Lifeforce, Tsunami, and Deathgrip being some more extreme examples).

We don’t want to make a set where colors are breaking color pie, or even bending it too much in aggregate. That said, there is potential for a set where we shift things into colors that can do things, but haven’t had as much chance to do them.

Red Bounce Mechanic

New 14 Mar 2024 Asked by joeshorriblepuns 33 Comments

Can red bounce creatures or is Dead // Gone a break?

Dead//Gone is from Planar Chaos, the set where we explored an alternate reality color pie. It’s not actually in red’s color pie.

Venarian Glimmer Question

New 02 Mar 2024 Asked by wildmagic93 18 Comments

Hi, is venarian glimmer a severe bend or a total break on Blue?

It’s a Planar Chaos card, for starters. Let’s call it a break. Blue can do forced looting, but it doesn’t control what you discard.
