Overwhelm

Once-Per-Turn Restrictions

New 15 Feb 2023 Asked by ne4782 36 Comments

I, for one, love the once-per-turn restrictions. Some of us dislike combos and prefer games to have a steady buildup, and the restriction really helps with that. Not every card needs to be able to overwhelm the opponent in a single turn, I don't need Morbid Opportunist drawing you seven cards because you had some kind of sacrifice effect.

Sagas as Evergreen Content

New 10 Jan 2023 Asked by strymon 31 Comments

Has there been any thought towards making Sagas evergreen in small quantities? I was listening to your DTW on Sagas again and, while I totally understand the desire to not overwhelm their fans, the way they are able to provide a sense of history to their sets feels really unmatched. I don’t expect to see sagas in Phyrexia, but they would have been so fascinating to see! If there were just one evergreen cycle of uncommon sagas in each set just so we don’t miss out on that kind of opportunity I would be so thrilled.

They’re deciduous which means any set is free to use them if they want.

Color Change of Humility Effects

New 02 Mar 2022 Asked by ashaya 35 Comments

When did humility effects move out of white? We had a variant in Overwhelming Splendor as recently as Hour of Devastation so I'm a little surprised the effect is out of color now.

Overwriting the abilities and stats of other creatures is primary blue as blue is the main shape changing color. We did move “destroy target creature and its controller gets a token” out of that flavor space and thus out of blue (now just in white). So white can destroy your creature and give you a 1/1, but blue overwrites the creature making it a vanilla 1/1.

Kamigawa's Advanced Technology

New 10 Jan 2022 Asked by anyguy 73 Comments

Will we get an explanation why the advanced Technology of Kamigawa is not used in other planes? I mean an evil Planeswalker could go to Kamigawa get all the high tech weapons and technology and totally overwhelm the medieval arms of other planes.

I don’t want to give too much away, but the technology of Kamigawa is tied very much to Kamigawa.

Wraths Insights

New 10 Jan 2022 Asked by rukalin-chan 38 Comments

If my searching skills aren't failing me, there've been 3-4 Wraths that keep your own board alive, all in black, like you said. (Dread Cacodemon, In Garruk's Wake, Overwhelming Forces for 1v1, Plague Wind) There've been two instant speed wraths (Fated Retribution, Rout) So it looks like one sided wraths are more likely.

Reducing Discard Effects

New 06 Apr 2020 Asked by kmalsom 54 Comments

Can I request that black gets less discard effects since it's extremely unfun to have cards ripped from your hand. It's more fun to face counters since you can at least plan how you are trying to overwhelm their hand of counter spells.

Just like counterspells, we have lowered the number and power of discard effects over the years.

White's Abilities

New 15 Sep 2018 Asked by zwomally 42 Comments

What do you mean white doesn’t do humility? Overwhelming Splendor was printed fairly recently.

Sorry, White still can have everyone becomes a 1/1. It doesn’t get pinpoint versions of it that affect just one creature.

Magikal Cards Mention

New 20 Apr 2018 Asked by tanteoctopus-blog 66 Comments

The webcomic El Goonish Shive has a card game called "Magikal Cards". One story arc is focused around a duel between a mono-green ramp deck featuring not-Bird of Paradise, not-Llanowar Elves, and not-Overwhelming Stampede against an "Olde School" not-Sneak Attack deck. A later arc features a draft tournament for not-Innistrad.

Overwhelming Splendor Mechanics

New 13 Jan 2018 Asked by raibys 36 Comments

Overwhelming Splendor just came out, and it's a Humble effect in White!

A fine point. We let white do a little mass humble on enchantments, but not individual effects and not on instants or sorceries.

Blue-Red Philosophy

New 03 Jun 2013 Asked by artoskincaid 10 Comments

Just got a chance to really listen to the Blue podcast, and I'm still at a loss for why there needs to be such a hard line between blue and red philosophy. Everything about them seems to be polar opposites rather than the subtle differences that exist between the other colors, like BG focus on the cycle of life, RW focus on overwhelming forces, GU focus on evolution, and WB focus on the group. UR doesn't seem to have this true cross-cutting theme that connects the two.

Blue and red are the two colors who enjoys trickery and they have a number of mechanics (like forking, redirecting, temporary stealing, etc.) that play into this feel.

Fan Interactions

The last time I talked to someone famous, I was a blubbering mess. I think I cried and ran away. Do you ever completely overwhelm a fan?

I have. Some people get very nervous meeting me.  Here’s a tip. If you ever meet me, just tell me something you love about Magic. I never tire of hearing about things people like and talking about things you have a passion for is easy.
