Learning to Lose

New 26 May 2024 Asked by trollmore 4 Comments

Magic taught me how to lose.I used to be both super competitive and an incredibly poor loser. It was affecting my relationships. One of the worst ways that cane out was while playing commander, since there was one guy in the pod a with a much higher budget and I was always throwing tantrums about how that was unfair. So I decided to fix it. I built a deck headed by Olivia, Mobilized for War full of madness draft chaff. The deck had enough synergy that playing it felt like I was doing something, like winning was possible, but wasn’t powerful enough that winning was actually *likely.*Then I sat down with that deck and I forced myself to keep losing games until I could tolerate it.It worked! Nowadays people love playing with me and I always try to make sure everyone’s having a good time, regardless of who wins. I’m a much better person because of this game. Thanks for everything that you do!

Un-Rules Scenario

New 17 Feb 2024 Asked by first-interplanar-bank 28 Comments

Hi Mark, I would like to ask an un-rules question. If I play Clair D'Loon and then later cast mobile clone, what happens when the token represented by my phone dies? Does my phone enter the graveyard or do I find a card to represent that token going forward for the rest of the game? Or is there a different answer that I haven't considered?

You can represent it with a card once it leaves the battlefield.

Populate Mobile Clone Mechanics

New 15 Oct 2022 Asked by themartiangeek 18 Comments

If you populate a Mobile Clone, do you get all the stuff on and attached to it or just the original creature?

You get every sticker and counter on it and every aura or equipment attached to it.

Copying Stickered Permanents

New 12 Oct 2022 Asked by teenatude 23 Comments

What happens to a copt of a stickered permanent? For example if i copy a creature with helm of the host that has a p/t sticker on it will that copy also “have” the same sticker

No, a copy only copies the base qualities of a creature (aka what’s printed on the card). Mobile Clone will copy stickers, as well as counters, auras, and equipment on the creature.

Using Polaroid for Mobile Clone

Can we use a Polaroid camera for Mobile Clone? It’s not mobile in the sense you presumably meant, but it seems like it’d work.

You have my blessing.

Rules for Mobile Clone

New 09 Oct 2022 Asked by strodeviking 24 Comments

With the card “Mobile Clone”, does the mobile device that photographs a card need to have a screen? Like what if I randomly want to use an iCarly digital camera from 2009? Would that follow the rules of this card since it can just “Photograph” a card.

You need to be able to see the image.

Populating Animate Object

New 08 Oct 2022 Asked by themartiangeek 20 Comments

Since Animate Object considers the object a token, what happens if you populate it?

You sadly don’t get the stickers which means it has no toughness and will immediately be removed by state based effects. You can copy the stickers with Mobile Clone though.

Mobile Clone Clause

No.

Token Control Clarification

New 26 Sep 2022 Asked by robotface 22 Comments

Mobile Clone doesn't say who controls the photocopy token, since nobody creates it, the device just "enters the battlefield." Is it the controller of the original? The person who cast the spell? If I use it on a creature my opponent has mind controlled with an aura, do I own the aura copy since I created the token, or is it still theirs and they get to keep the photocopied creature?

The caster of Mobile Phone controls the creature token.

Chaos Confetti Interaction

New 23 Sep 2022 Asked by dolbyzalo 29 Comments

Say I have March of the Machines and Chaos Confetti in play, and I cast Mobile Clone, targeting Chaos Confetti. If I then activate the ability of the phone creature artifact, do I have to destroy my phone?

You are allowed to represent the copy token with a Magic card at any point, so you can use that during the activation of Chaos Confetti.

Mobile Clone Usage

New 23 Sep 2022 Asked by matthewgm 17 Comments

If I cast a second “Mobile Clone” while my phone is still in play, can I use my phone again? If I can and do, does it leave play first then enter play?

You can pick up any card to look at it. : )

Teaser Card in Midnight Hunt

New 06 Sep 2021 Asked by surrak-the-hunk-caller 47 Comments

Hi Mark! In your teaser for Midnight Hunt, you said "a popular Innistrad card gets reprinted." Since then, we've seen previews for 2 cards originally printed in Innistrad: Unruly Mob, and Dissipate. Can you confirm if either of these is the card intended by your teaser?

Neither is the card I was referring to, but if you want to count either as that, I won’t mind.

Perceived Inaccuracies in Game

New 30 May 2021 Asked by definitely-not-a-squirrel-blog 73 Comments

Hi Mark, this is blunt but it comes from a love of the game. A lot of things said today were just incorrect. A lot of strong cards in commander are modern legal. A lot of strong cards in commander don't see play in legacy. Green's token making is much, much better than white's, and it is as recent as scute mob. Green is even better at removal. And a lot of green's strong cards are things white absolutely can do. That's why players are frustrated. The solution isnt impossible, it already exists.

1) There are cards legal in Modern that came out eighteen years ago. That’s a long time ago, 2) I said Commander stresses different aspects of the game, so, of course, there are cards strong in Commander but not in Legacy. 3) Green is better than white at larger tokens, but white is better at smaller tokens, especially in the modern day era of the game. 4) Scute Mob uses counters not tokens. 5) Green’s removal is conditional on its creatures. With an empty battlefield, green has a very hard time getting rid of creatures. The few good cards at doing this are breaks that shouldn’t have berm printed. 6) Grern and white do have a lot of overlap. That is true, 7) Making strong white cards is something we’re doing, but making weak green cards is not a viable answer.

Aggro in Commander

New 20 Oct 2019 Asked by rhonas-the-indomitable-blog 43 Comments

Re Aggro in commander: Aggro can work, but you need a really good commander to overcome the fact that you're trying to do 120 damage rather than 20. Krenko, Mob Boss and Purphoros work well since they can quickly do large amounts of damage to everyone. Of course, aggro also has the meta downside that the other players probably want to play the usual long game and putting damage on the board early makes you a target.

What I was really trying to say is that the format of Commander, especially playing with a lot of people, makes aggro strategies significantly harder than in two-player formats. I didn’t mean to imply that you couldn’t play them.
