Future Illusion Support

New 05 Apr 2024 Asked by stankmaster5000 35 Comments

Hey Mark, I first started playing mtg with Core 2011, but didn't really get into it until Core 2012. I loved the illusions in m12, and the flavor mechanic where if they were targeted they (vanished) were sacrificed, along with their lord of the unreal. It was the first mtg deck I ever made, and I still have it today. But 12 years later illusions are... Basically no different than they were over a decade ago. There have been very few illusions since then, and even the lord has never left m12. I know it's probably tough to do outside of a core set, but will we ever see more illusion support?

I assume eventually.

Standard Duration Impact

New 20 Sep 2023 Asked by sigmasonicx 40 Comments

About ten years ago, it was considered a mistake to have printed the Titans in both M11 and M12 since players got annoyed about having them in Standard for so long. With the three year Standard, that increases the risk of having cards that wouldn't be banned in a two-year Standard sticking around long enough to bother players. Is this influencing what sorts of designs are in upcoming sets?

It’s something we think about. Note that the power level is higher for three-year Standard than two-year Standard.

Bloodthirst Storm Scale

New 27 Jun 2023 Asked by ferrous-pluton 22 Comments

Hey quick question but is Bloodthirst still a 3 on the storm scale? It just feels odd that it has such a low score despite the last time it was used was back in Magic 2012. I remember really liking it back in the day and I wish it got used more.

Being low on the Storm Scale means there are few obstacles to it getting reused in a premier set, but someone still has to choose to do it.

More Kaldra and Empires Cycle

New 09 Mar 2020 Asked by nerd-in-glasses 28 Comments

Do you think we could get more cycles like the Kaldra pieces and the empires cycle from M12. I know I personally love them and wouldn't mind seeing them more often.

The lack of blocks makes it trickier, but not impossible.

M12 Return Confusion

New 14 Aug 2018 Asked by ryomakunx-blog 188 Comments

When will we return to m12?

What does that even mean?

Mind Control Rarity

New 05 May 2017 Asked by shadowman2099 16 Comments

Are we going to see more Mind Control variants at uncommon like Lay Claim in the future? This is the first one since Magic 2012.

The default for permanent stealing is rare, but obvious we occasionally veer away from the default. I wouldn’t expect it to happen often.

Team Leads for Expansions

New 03 May 2014 Asked by idesama 19 Comments

We've seen an Ethan-led set and it is awesome, and in the past we've seen Ken-led sets (and they're awesome) and an Alexis-led set (and...well, Dragon's Maze was a pretty tricky expansion to work out so it was a very solid effort nonetheless)...when do the other GDS employees get their first crack at a Magic expansion (Magic proper, not a supplemental set)?

Mark Globus led Magic 2012 & Magic 2014. Shawn Main has led something that we haven’t made the design team public yet.

Reprint Decisions

New 31 Jan 2014 Asked by nobthehobbit 19 Comments

When you need a certain functionality that already exists on a card, how do you decide which cards will get reprinted (such as Curiosity in Innistrad) and which will get functional reprints (such as Pharika's Cure in Theros as opposed to Sorin's Thirst in Magic 2012)?

The creative team usually decides whether a reprint is the same or gets a new creative skinning. The two big exceptions is when we think the card returning is exciting and we want it to be the same and when development doesn’t want eight of a certain card in a certain format.

Garruk's Appearance

New 28 Apr 2013 Asked by latsblaster 22 Comments

Garruk, an "beefy" planeswalker? In Magic 2012/Magic 2013 he looked like an unhealthy roid-builder, ready for a deadly heart attack. More realistic muscles in MtG!

Remember, this is fantasy and he’s also eight feet tall.

Feedback on Hexproof

New 02 Jan 2013 Asked by latsblaster 11 Comments

With Magic 2012 and Innistrad-block, Hexproof became a common ability. WIth Magic 2013 and Return to Ravnica, hexproof stepped back. Did you get negative response concerning Hexproof? Noone I know really likes it.

The scaling back is in response to the public outcry. Believe it or not, we do actually listen to what our players say. : )

Card Reference Mechanics

New 16 Dec 2012 Asked by soulbondinfect 9 Comments

I really liked the Empire set from M12. People were always suprised that I made a good deck using them and thought there effects were wrong (when all of them were out). Is there a chance you can do more cards that referance other cards by name?

We can and we will.

Guild Keywords Strategy

New 15 Jul 2012 Asked by lantern-armory 7 Comments

You expressed affection for some of the guild keywords. What was the reason you scrapped them all?

We haven’t scrapped them. Bloodthirst, for example, was just used in Magic 2012. We’ve chosen to make new keywords for the guilds because one of the joys of Magic is exploration and discovering new things.
Ten keywords is a lot though so we opted to make space for them by not bringing back any of the old guild keywords.
Note that one of our design constraints was to make sure if you shuffled a bunch of cards with the same guild watermark, despite where the cards came from, the deck would feel and play right.

MXX Design Timeline

New 22 Jun 2012 Asked by markdash 1 Comments

Does the MXX (M12, M13, etc.) design process have the same calendar as the expert-level sets? That is, are they designed/developed as far in advance, or less so?

Their design takes a little less overall time but they are done way ahead of time like everything else.

Common Artifacts Trend

New 17 Jun 2012 Asked by xanderxela-deactivated20190410 3 Comments

So far we haven't seen any common artifacts in M13 and Magic 2012 had, to my knowledge, only a single common artifact (Manalith) is this a deliberate trend with core sets or a part of new world order?

Artifacts since the beginning were not meant to be all that common. Yes, we’ll do a few at common in some sets, but unless the set has an artifact theme, we tend not to have too many common artifacts.

Yearly Naming Confusion

New 21 May 2012 Asked by nyktos 4 Comments

Don't you think it's somewhat confusing that Planechase 2012 comes out in the same summer as Magic 2013, a year after Magic 2012 and Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012?

Magic 2013 is named as such because it is on sale for a whole year and it’s hard to get stores to carry a product with last year’s date. Planechase 2012 is only on sale for this year so that’s why it gets 2012. Yes, that is confusing but there isn’t an easy way around it.

Star Format Acknowledgement

New 15 Apr 2012 Asked by dconquist 6 Comments

I'm a big fan of the Star format for Magic. Do you think Wizards will ever formally recognize that format with a separate expansion, as it did with Commander? I notice there are a few enemy colour targeting spells (Deathmark, Combust, Flashfreeze etc), at least one for each colour, in Magic 2012. They don't seem to be too popular or useful... But they're great for making decks for a Star game.

I have no answer for your question because it’s an area outside of my expertise, but you have a tenacity that is admirable. Since I doubt anyone but me knows this, dcconquist has been asking this question for what I think is weeks (or maybe it just feels that way. :) ) I think the biggest strike against the format is that it requires exactly five players which makes it a bit restrictive.  I just felt like you deserved an answer for sticking with it.

Card Overload Issue

New 01 Mar 2012 Asked by ascoat 1 Comments

In your article "The Year of Living Changerously" you wrote that the glut of new cards was Magic's "front and center" barrier to entry in 2008, hence the switch to smaller sets. I count about 90 new cards in Magic 2012, so we're back to Tempest-Kamigawa level. Since the baseline was chosen assuming all-repeat Core Sets, has new-card overload been a concern from Magic 2010 on?

Our current card level is far below the high of the Lorwyn/Time Spiral Standard era.

Introducing New Players

New 05 Sep 2011 Asked by mermaidbitch 0 Comments

So I just got a bunch of new players into the game. Right now I run Theme Deck tournaments at my townhouse to make sure everyone stays on equal grounds and my friends don't get discouraged. What would be the best way to eaaaase them into constructed or another easy format? I don't want to scare them off from the game too quickly...

Minimasters are a fun format that’s very easy to pick up. Shuffle three of each basic land into a booster (I’d start with a core set like Magic 2012) and play.  By the way, Magic Celebration on September 10 is going to be running free minimaster tournaments for all attendees.

Defining 'Dies'

New 01 Sep 2011 Asked by gougar 1 Comments

I was looking at Skirsdag High Priest and it says that its ability ca only be activated if a creature died that turn, is that just new phrasing, or is it older, or is it somehow different than just being destroyed?

Magic 2012 introduced the term “die”. A creature dies when it “is put into the graveyard from the battlefield”. Note that other permanents do not die only creatures.
