Guilds of Ravnica

Color Coding Changes

New 05 May 2024 Asked by jimreviewsthickshakes-blog 23 Comments

Hey mark! I enjoyed your alphabet podcast, but I might have another one for you. When guilds of Ravnica came out, R&D referred to the nightveil predator cycle of cards as costing CCDD. Does that give you an entry for D?

D moved to N when C moved to M. Now the translated version of that sentence. We used to use C to mean any colored mana, so if we were making a tight cycle (all the cards have the same mana value) where all the costs cost two generic mana and one colored mana, we’d write it as 2C. If we were making a cycle of two-colored multicolor cards, we’d use D for the second color. For example, if it was a tight cycle with two generic mana and one of two different colored mana, we’d write it as 2CD.But then Oath of the Gatewatch came out and we introduced colorless mana in costs. We needed a letter for that, so we used C for colorless. That meant we had to change the old usage of C as it would make a cost of 2C ambiguous. We changed from C to M to mean any colored mana. When we changed it to M, we changed the secondary color to N as N follows M like D followed C.

About Ravnica Set Innovations

New 24 Apr 2024 Asked by questingbridge 27 Comments

In your lessons learned episode for GRN and RNA you mentioned you had some new ideas for how to shake up a Ravnica set, but you kept things more familiar because War of the Spark was on the horizon. Were some of these ideas used in MKM? If/When we see these ideas on a future visit to Ravnica?

No, my ideas were for a guild Ravnica set with Murders at Karlov Manor wasn’t.

Favorite Unprinted Mechanic

What was your favorite mechanic from Guilds of Ravnica or Ravnica Allegiance?

Debt counters. Too bad we didn’t print it. : (

Set Excitement

New 30 Mar 2024 Asked by thisisanuncreativeusername 25 Comments

Outlaws of Thunder Junction has at least two people I know interested in attending Pre-Release for the first time in a while (their last ones being Neon Dynasty and Guilds of Ravnica). The tone and aesthetic of the world and cards is a home run in my books.

Glad to hear that.

Staying on Planes

New 14 Mar 2024 Asked by strixheaven 29 Comments

Hi Mark. One of the concerns I have had for future sets is that there aren't any sets that take place on the same plane i.e. a plane that takes place over multiple sets. This makes it feel like the planes don't get enough time to be fleshed out and that it feels too much like we're jumping back and forth between planes too quickly. Is this a common concern or do most people prefer the variety of moving between a lot of different settings?

The message that we got loud and clear during the block era was that players generally don’t like staying on the same plane. We do on occasion though stay on the same plane for two or more sets (Guilds of Ravnica/Ravnica Allegiance/War of the Spark, Innistrad: Midnight Hunt/Innistrad: Crimson Vow, Dominaria United/The Brother’s War).

Ravnica Creative Ideas

New 23 Feb 2024 Asked by gabecampos89 28 Comments

Hey mark, a while back, in GRN block you mentioned how in a Ravnica revisit you had some ideas on how to do things differently, but ultimately because of WAR, you felt a classic return would be better. Are those new ideas on how to do Ravnica expressed in Murders, or is Murders a whole new thing?

Murders is a top-down murder mystery set. I was talking about a tweak on a guild set.

MKM Set Appreciation

New 21 Jan 2024 Asked by strymon 72 Comments

I’m really liking how MKM is being handled as a Ravnica backdrop set. I feel you guys did a great job of setting expectations this time around. If going into spoiler season I was expecting a true multicolor set, I’d be disappointed with the multicolor presence. Instead, I’m pleasantly surprised. This was a great way to return to Ravnica. It feels like Ravnica, but it feels fresh. I love Ravnica, but it was beginning to feel stale during GRN/RNA. This makes me look forward to future backdrop sets.

Happy to hear that.

Surveil Commander Design

New 18 Jan 2024 Asked by chlvirtue 32 Comments

As somebody who has wanted a dedicated surveil commander since guilds of ravnica, i just wanted to say that mirko, obsessive theorist is everything. Thank you. Were guild watermarks considered for this set? It still does feel quite faction based and I noticed the Ravnica: Clue cards have them.

We decided we didn’t want guilds to be the focus for Murders at Karlov Manor, so we chose not to use the watermarks.

Set Design Evolution

New 04 Nov 2023 Asked by megaquestionsformark 43 Comments

Can you give another example besides LCI of a set vision design handed over that ended up radically different once set design was done?

Guilds of Ravnica and Ravnica Allegiance changed a lot from the mechanics handed off from vision design. Adventures in the Forgotten Realms also went through a lot of changes in set design.

Multicolored Environment Mix

New 30 Apr 2023 Asked by thunderweb 39 Comments

When you make a multicolored environment (such as Strixhaven or New Capenna), can it be a mix of allies/arcs and enemies/wedges? (such as 3 ally pairs and 2 enemy pairs, or 2 arcs and 3 wedges)(It would be like Guilds of Ravnica or Ravnica Allegiance, except it is just one set with no complementary pair.)

While it’s a possibility, the aesthetics make it tricky to do without having another set do the rest.

Ravnica Founders Cards

New 19 Nov 2022 Asked by dwarf-scum 40 Comments

I assume that it’s mostly just coincidence, but of the 10 Paruns who founded the guilds of Ravnica, six of them have a card (Azor, Razia, Szadek, Niv-Mizzet, Obzedat, and Rakdos) and the four that don’t (Svogthir, Cisarzim, Mat’Selesnya, and Biomancer Simic) are the ones with green in their color identity. Is there a particular reason you can think of why none of these four have a card? What are the chances of us ever getting cards to represent them?

I think it’s about whether or not they’re still alive as all the Ravnica sets have been in the present day.

Block Structure Feasibility

New 20 Aug 2022 Asked by kjwxyz 25 Comments

I was wondering: would it be feisable to make a full fledge block in the case of multiple sets on the same plane where it made sense to do so? I know that with the new single set paradygm you are not forced to make a block but are you also forced not to make one?

One could say Guilds of Ravnica/ Ravnica Allegiances/War of the Spark was that.

Camaraderie's Bend Analysis

It’s a little more bend than when it was printed.

Future Color Pie Philosophy

New 07 Aug 2022 Asked by pontemosca 25 Comments

Hi Mark, Camaraderie has " gain X life and draw X cards, where X is the number of creatures you control" + pump effect in GW in Guilds of Ravnica

I’m talking about the color pie as we’re currently applying it which is two years in the future.

Splice Mechanic Usage

New 10 Jul 2022 Asked by ebonstone 35 Comments

When you last tried Splice, do you consider another card type to too(like Arcane but not Arcane?) to limit its abuse?

We tried splice onto instant for Izzet in Guilds of Ravnica. EDIT: I forgot Modern Horizons 1 made some.

Theros Gods and Ravnica Guilds

New 09 Jul 2022 Asked by nothingbutland-blog 44 Comments

So is there a way under the new set release a set with all 15 Theros gods or all 10 Ravnica guilds or does this now mean we will never get to have them all together again? Since sets are not drafted together even staying on the same plane still really breaks up these rather integral parts of these planes identities. And also does this mean we will never see any more sets with a full 5 mono and/or 10 dual color sets ever again?

Guilds of Ravnica and Ravnica Allegiance were part of the newest set model, so it is possible to do. We can have consecutive sets be on the same world if there is a reason to do so. That said, there are things we routinely did in blocks (mostly larger cycles) that are trickier to do under the current system.

Splice Ability Feedback

New 04 May 2022 Asked by uss-excalibur 41 Comments

What do you think about creatures having the "Splice onto Instant or Sorcery" ability?

It was the Izzet mechanic for a short time in Guilds of Ravnica. It has repetition of play issues.

Creature and Artifact Mechanic Prospects

New 10 Mar 2022 Asked by ultimatealphawalker 42 Comments

After getting landfall, constellation, and magecraft, might we ever get similar mechanics for creatures and/or artifacts (or are those types more problematic for some reason)?

I’m sure we’ll do them one day. Both, in fact, have been cut from sets. “Creaturefall” was the Selesnya mechanic for some of vision design for Guilds of Ravnica, and Kaladesh had “artifactfall” for a little while early in design.

Reflections on Kamigawa's Shift

New 05 Feb 2022 Asked by ancient-chaos 58 Comments

Hey Mark,As a huge fan of original Kamigawa block, I have really mixed feelings about NEO. The story, aesthetic, and mechanics - all of the individual components, in a vacuum, are all really cool. But it doesn't feel like a Kamigawa set. It feels so focused on the tech vs tradition theme that a big part of what makes Kamigawa, the kami, got tossed to the side or just left to be references peppering the set. To me, this is like releasing just War of the Spark, without GRN and RNA before it, and calling that a return to Ravnica.

I get that people interpret what Kamigawa means to them differently, so if this feels less Kamigawa to you, I get it. The reason there’s less of a Kami feel is that the main storyline is different. The original trip was about a war between the humans and the spirits. As such, the Kami played a larger role. This time, the story isn’t focused on that, so the Kami exist at a lower level.
