Battle Removal Colors

New 18 Jul 2024 Asked by elderaktis 10 Comments

"Which color(s) are the main one(s) for battle removal?Red and white usually have slightly more “combat tricks”. Green also always has a Giant Growth like effect that’s good in combat."I think this ask was about removing battles (the card type).

Red has direct damage, which removes battles. We haven’t chosen a color to destroy them.

Primary Colors for Battle Removal

Red and white usually have slightly more “combat tricks”. Green also always has a Giant Growth like effect that’s good in combat.

Committing a Crime Rules

New 02 Mar 2024 Asked by gresh113 37 Comments

I'm curious: will the rules for "committing a crime" allow for cards with wording like "whenever you commit a crime, you may copy that crime" and/or "counter target crime"?

You can care about a crime being committed, but spells aren’t crimes. It’s more of an act than a thing. For example, I cast Giant Growth. If I target my creature, I haven’t committed a crime, but if I target my opponent’s creature, it is a crime.

Green's Untap Effects

New 09 Sep 2023 Asked by kagusthic 34 Comments

Exactly what sort of untap effects are in Green’s color pie?

Green mostly ties them to Giant Growth effects and pseudo Vigilance granting. Sometimes it can tap to untap one creature.

Cipher Concept Utility

New 27 Nov 2022 Asked by coatsville 23 Comments

In a recent DTW, you mentioned that Cipher didn’t end up having much drain space because you couldn’t use combat-oriented effects after the damage was done (giant growth being your example). Did you consider Cipher to be (and I’m not 100% sure how the wording might be) something like “after blockers are declared and this creature remains unblocked”? That would have enabled pump spell effects and other effects like giving it double-strike, or even team-boosting “all creatures get +1/+1” effects because it would trigger before damage.

And it would have made it significantly harder to understand. Grok-ability is important.

Praise for The Brothers' War

New 13 Nov 2022 Asked by troacctid 28 Comments

After getting the chance to play with the cards, I have to say, The Brothers' War feels fantastic so far. I love love love the combination of Prototype, Powerstones, and Unearth together in the same environment. I also really like the cycle of common mill-three-keep-one creatures, and seeing Giant Growth in limited again made me happy. Hats off to the team!

High fives shall be applied.

Giant Growth's Potential Standard Reprint

New 12 May 2022 Asked by androgeus 55 Comments

Is Giant Growth the only boon that could be reprinted in standard? (Healing Slave too weak, Ancestral Recall & Bolt too strong, Dark Ritual too out of colour pie)

Yes, I believe so.

What about Giant Growth? Would that warp Standard?

Giant Growth is fine for Standard.

Request for Multi-target Abilities

New 22 Apr 2022 Asked by blaze-1013 21 Comments

For clarification on my question I meant something that would allow a different card to have more targets. Like something that could make Giant Growth or Animate Dead target multiple things.

Copy effects essentially do that.

Card with Most Artworks

New 08 Sep 2021 Asked by lunis-j 87 Comments

I know this probably isn't your area of expertise, but do you know which magic card has the largest amount of different artworks between its various printings?

I believe the answer is Mountain. The basic lands are far in first and Mountain showed up in one set that the others didn’t (Arabian Nights). As for cards other than basic lands, I’m not sure. Stone Rain, Giant Growth, Mind Rot - something we’ve reprinted a lot.Does anyone know the non-Mountain answer?

Scaling the Boon Cycle

New 08 Aug 2021 Asked by myfavoriteflavorisblue 57 Comments

You've talked about scaling the boon cycle to Ancestral Recall before! Quoting a previous answer:
"This is a little out of my area of expertise, so I texted Donald Smith and he talked with a number of the play designers. Here’s his text:
"So the answers I’m getting right now are Lightning Bolt between 5 and 6, Dark Ritual between 4 and 5, Giant Growth between 7 and 10, Healing Salve between 20 and 100 (or infinite). There are also reasonable arguments being made for Bolt needing to be 7 or 10 and Giant Growth needing to be 20 (especially since a 100 point Healing Salve counters these two directly).¿¿My personal answer is Bolt is 6, Dark Ritual is 5, Giant Growth is 10, and Healing Salve at 100. I’m closer to Bolt and Giant Growth needing to be higher rather than lower too lol.”"

Tome of the Infinite Query

New 27 Jul 2021 Asked by glintfang-nezumi 104 Comments

Isn’t the upcoming digital only card, Tome of the Infinite, a color pie break? It can use exclusively blue mana to draw and cast several nonblue cards like lightning bolt and giant growth.

No more than this:

Targeting a Creature vs Creature Spell

New 03 Apr 2021 Asked by the-darklorous 33 Comments

If I target a Creature on the battlefield with Giant Growth, I'm targeting a Creature, and not a creature spell. If I target a creature on the stack with Counterspell, or a creature in the graveyard with Reanimate, I'm targeting a creature spell, but not a Creature. Is that right?

A creature spell is only a creature on the battlefield, yes.

Reprints in Design Card File

New 13 Dec 2020 Asked by mtg-ds 38 Comments

Technical question about the design card file: Do reprints explicitly take up a slot in the card file? Like, would Giant Growth be included as (e.g.) "CG08"? If so, in the card file, do you manually write out the name, cost, text, etc? Or do you just make reference to it in some other way?

Reprints take up a slot in a card file and all the text is copied onto that card slot file.

Trample with Giant Growth

If or when: giant growth with trample. A keyword can really change a card!

We’ve had numerous Giant Growth effects with trample.

Green's Transformation Magic Limits

New 24 Jul 2020 Asked by jjustin1379 37 Comments

Why does green not get transformation magic that targets the opponent. Certain multicolor and hybrid cards imply it is something green can dip into. Green can already transform and clone itself freely and can modify opponent creatures with giant growth effects already. Why not let it transform any creature in any way as this does not mitigate its weakness of overuse of creatures or permanently dealing with creatures?

Magic works best if we limit how many colors get a certain effect.

Boon Cycle Scaling Concept

New 09 Jul 2020 Asked by smuglookingbarrel6 52 Comments

I was really interested in the idea of scaling the boon cycle, so here's another version: If the boon cycle were scaled to the point where they could all be comfortably printed into standard, what would they be?

Shock and Giant Growth are Stsndsrd staples. White can get 4 life, blue can draw one card and black could get one black mana (it would be out of color pie though), but each would have room for an additional effect.

Scaling Alpha's Boon Cycle

Colour Pie Specific Card Tutor

New 06 Jul 2020 Asked by nine-tailed-cat 27 Comments

Heya, Mark! Colour pie question: Are all colours allowed to tutor for specific cards (i.e. "a card named X") regardless of those cards' types? For instance, while green can't tutor for instants in general, could it fetch Giant Growth specifically?

Each color has specific things it can tutor for. We will occasionally do bends.

Effects of Destroyed Staying Power

New 08 Mar 2020 Asked by benrainbase 44 Comments

Un-Ruling! “Staying Power” is on the field when I play “Giant Growth”. Three turns later, “Staying Power” is destroyed. Does the “Giant Growth” boost immediately go away or will it fade at the end of turn?

It goes away immediately.
