Sorcery Speed Pingers Implication

New 14 Jul 2024 Asked by marcantoniosavelli 2 Comments

Would sorcery speed pingers solve the problem of too much complexity in combat and allow pingers to be printed in standard?

They don’t change the math much. Yes, it’s different for first strike/double strike.

Mechanics of Gifting Explained

New 11 Jul 2024 Asked by tiwaztyrsfist 4 Comments

With regards to "Gift a tapped fish" being a single 'keyword', are the rules being written in such a way that Gifting in general can be referred to by other cards?

I.e. Something like "If a player gives another player a gift [do this thing]."Or will they have to refer to SPECIFIC gifting effects?Like, will "Gift a tapped fish" "Gift a Card" "Gift a Food" all technically be a different as First Strike, Trample, and Flying from a rules point of view?

They’re connected like protection connects protection from red and protection from instants.

Slug and Strike Mechanics

New 10 Apr 2024 Asked by luvkraft 21 Comments

If Spitting Slug were to be reprint now, would you have Slug have Later strike instead of First strike on the opponent's creature? Also, did you think of Slug when Later strike was created for Tripple strike?

Last strike and triple strike don’t work in the normal rules.

Keyword Granting Creatures

New 05 Apr 2024 Asked by ryandimiragent 51 Comments

So when looking through creatures that grant keywords in typal abilities, I’ve noticed that most creatures have the keyword and grant it to other creatures, but some just grant it to all that have the type. For example, Drogskol Reinforcements, a Spirit, has “Melee” and “Other Spirits you control have melee.”On the other hand, Lancer Sliver just has “Sliver creatures you control have first strike.”Why is there a difference? Is there a specific formatting or rules reason that all typal keyword-granting abilities don’t just follow the Lancer Sliver version? The latter seems simpler.

For clarity, the template is the creature has the ability and then grants the ability to “all other creatures you control”. Slivers use the old template because when you have a bunch of them, it’s easier to add up all the effects.

First Strike Mechanics

Oh! Another Nuts&Bolts question! Does “first strike on attack” count as a whole instance of first strike?

For set skeleton reasons, yes.

Pseudo-Last Strike

New 01 Feb 2024 Asked by j-waffles 27 Comments

Could there be a pseudo-last strike by saying “creatures blocking and blocked by (CARDNAME) have first strike” ?

We’ve made cards that do that.

Black's Combat Mechanics

New 20 Jan 2024 Asked by jjustin1379 17 Comments

Is first strike a bend in black? Would double strike be a bend?

First strike is tertiary in black. Black doesn’t get double strike.

First Strike Variants

New 10 Dec 2023 Asked by stormtide-leviathan 36 Comments

Un rules question: Is alpha strike a first strike variant, for the purposes of first-strike matters effects?

I’d say alpha strike, last strike, and triple strike are all first strike variants.

Keyword Design Space

New 09 Dec 2023 Asked by doopboopdoop 36 Comments

Is there any design space in the fact ward, first strike, and reach are all "worse" versions of other keywords?

It lets you create cards where you can ramp up abilities.

Nature's Blessing Beads

New 16 Nov 2023 Asked by chetskolos 28 Comments

Nature's Blessing has only one paper printing and its text is: "{G}{W}: Choose and discard a card from your had to have target creature gain banding, first strike, or trample or get a +1/+1 counter." Since before keyword counter were a thing I used glass beads with 'banding' or the other keywords to mark this change to the creature since this effect lasts indefinitely, and the wording (although cumbersome) does suggest using counters. What do you suggest I do to avoid misrepresenting the card?

Using glass beads is fine. Just be aware they aren’t technically counters for cards that mechanically care about counters.

First Strike Status

New 16 Nov 2023 Asked by upgferreira 36 Comments

Hi Mark. Is the FIRST STRIKE Evergreen or Deciduous now?This year Premier sets:ONE: C (1R), W (1C conditional and 1R) and BG (1R) = 4 > No uncommon no RedMOM: W (1 C conditional and 1R), R (1C and 1R), BR (1R), UR (1R), BG (1R conditional) and WBG (1M) = 8 > No uncommonWOE: W (1U) and R (1C conditional) = 2LCI: R (1R and 1M) = 2 > No uncommon and no WhiteTotal = 16

It’s still evergreen. We do it a bit more restricted (your turn/on attack) these days.

Concept of Last Strike

New 19 Oct 2023 Asked by kawsmecal 23 Comments

Could "Last Strike" be made black-border by doing something like creatures blocking this creature get first strike until end of combat/turn? Maybe needing additional wording to make it work.

There is a card that does that. It’s not quite last strike, and doesn’t allow triple strike.

Visiting Xerex

New 19 Oct 2023 Asked by capeable-hope-7878 26 Comments

If/When. Visiting Xerex. Also, just my thoughts, but could last strike work in xerex, with a card that reverses combat steps, like. Instead of "First strike, strike, last strike" we get "Last strike, strike, first strike"?

If. Last strike is currently an acorn/silver-bordered mechanic.

New Mechanics Inquiry

New 16 Oct 2023 Asked by mgmegadog 18 Comments

Just reminding you about the purple New Mechanics look up. If you do manage to find what they are, could you let us know which one is New Mechanic A and which is New Mechanic B? New Mechanic A was on a rare with first strike, and New Mechanic B was given to all creatures by an uncommon enchantment.

Remind me what article this is from again.

Mechanics Combination

New 09 Oct 2023 Asked by thunderweb 32 Comments

Can similar mechanics be put into a card (or a set) together?(e.g. "first strike and double strike", "flying and reach", "hexproof and ward", "undying and persist", or "infect, poisonous, and toxic")

We tend not to include them on the same card, but definitely will use them in the same set.

Weeping Angel Design

New 04 Oct 2023 Asked by blaze-1013 51 Comments

I REALLY enjoy the design of Weeping Angel. It's an angel, a white creature type, on a blue black card. But even though it's blue black mechanically, flash, first strike, vigilance, and removing an attacking creature are all white effects. It's white's iconic creature type out of color but still feeling white. That is just so cool. It also perfectly captures the Weeping Angel as a character so high fives to everyone for that amazing design.

I’ll pass the high fives along.

Color Pie Exceptions

New 17 Sep 2023 Asked by joscis 27 Comments

Hi! I was reading your mechanical color pie 2021 article and you mention in it that you (almost) never make multicolor cards with an ability that is tertiary in one of its colors if the other color doesn’t have access to that ability. That made me wonder if the recent Glissa Sunslayer (BG first strike) and upcoming Weeping Angel (BU first strike) are a softening of this rule, a sign that first strike is being granted to more colors or just two of the rare exceptions. Thanks for looking at my question!

We make exceptions. It’s not the sign of a big change.

Keyword Combos Request

New 15 Sep 2023 Asked by shallowerblue 41 Comments

I've been really enjoying the "keyword mix-and-match" that's been possible in Limited several times recently (examples being mutate in IKO, disturb auras in VOW, and backup in MOM). It's been fun trying to give deathtouch to a first strike creature, or flying to a big creature, and many more. I'm unsure if that's more Vision or Set Design, but could I request more and/or ask you to give a high-five to the appropriate designers? Thanks so much!

Mechanical choice and execution is both team’s responsibility. I’ll try to make more.

Red Scorpions Concept

New 12 Sep 2023 Asked by owenkirby 42 Comments

Hi Mark, as a follow up to red spiders: What about red scorpions? They live in rocky areas and could conceivably have first strike as an ability. Thank-you

Scorpions feel much more red.

First Strike Modification

New 10 Sep 2023 Asked by nightfiremelody 45 Comments

Hi Mark. If you could go back to the beginning, do you think the game would be better if First Strike had an "only works when this creature is attacking" clause built into the keyword? I've noticed WotC using the "First Strike only on your turn" templating much more frequently because of how much it improves gameplay, and I wonder if it would've been better for that to just be the keyword. It makes sense from a flavor perspective too, since the person who attacks is almost always striking first.

We’d seriously consider it.
