Fading

Saga Creatures Complexity

New 28 Aug 2023 Asked by j-waffles 32 Comments

How would R&D feel about saga creatures? I know sagas are very popular, but I also see how it would end up functioning similar to fading/vanishing, which were unpopular mechanics

Sagas also being creatures cause a bunch of issues, designwise. I think they’d be very hard to cost and balance properly.

Aetherborn Mechanic Fit

New 11 Mar 2023 Asked by fancifoolery 59 Comments

Do you think in a return to Kaladesh we might see Aetherborn with the fading/vanishing mechanic? To me it feels like a nice place flavour-wise for both the mechanic and the creature type. Also some synergy with proliferating and maybe gaining counters when killing or damaging units

It’s a great flavor fit in a vacuum.

Request for Deck Name Podcast

New 22 Feb 2022 Asked by moonfolklore 53 Comments

Hi Mark! I was wondering if you (maybe with a guest) could do a podcast on deck names. Things like The Deck, White Weenie, Fish, The Solution, Cheerios, The Rock, Deep Dog, Sleigh, Project X, Caw Go, or Pickles. Sometimes I feel like that part of Magic history is fading. Guild, shard, and wedge names are used a lot more for decks nowadays.

I’ll add it to the short list.

Fading Relevance of Core Sets

New 17 Feb 2022 Asked by magraal 48 Comments

"Why the move away from core? Other factors (the popularity of Jumpstart and Arena’s tutorial, for example) made us believe that we didn’t need it anymore as a new player on ramp." - Core sets have traditionally been the set that provides a reprint outlet, as well as providing solutions to potential problems in standard without needing them to fit thematically in a set. It is problematic that WotC believes that core sets are no longer necessary when players feel that they are.

I have sales, play, and market research data that says the players don’t think it’s all that important.

Feedback on Drawback Mechanics

New 10 Sep 2021 Asked by jdrawer01 55 Comments

Hey Mark, I know you care about these types of things, and that my opinion is but one of many, but I saw you say that drawback mechanics like Decayed tend to be accepted if they're flavorful enough. I like drawback mechanics (even fading) when used well, as I like the game of having to figure out how best to mitigate it/when to use those cards, but for whatever reason I don't like decay. Maybe it's the fact it's on tokens, but I've dismissed so many cards shown so far where it's their whole deal

Not every mechanic is for every player. I will say it’s the mechanic that play design said they were most pleasantly surprised about. It plays very well and has a lot of mechanical flavor.

Un-Rules and Meld Mechanic

New 28 Aug 2021 Asked by timpietsch 35 Comments

Un-Rules question =) What happens if I control Gisela, the Broken Blade, and change ____'s name to Bruna, the Fading Light? Do they successfully meld at the end of my turn, even though ____ doesn't have a backside? Gisela's effect specifically says that I only need "a creature named Bruna, the Broken Blade" for it to work, am I right?

No, you also need the backside.

Mechanics for Aetherborn Tribe

New 23 Aug 2021 Asked by madethistoaskaboutaetherborn 61 Comments

Aetherborn have this cool concept of live fast die young, but only some of them reflect this mechanically. It makes sense that they'd be living off of borrowed time and some sort of vanishing/fading like mechanic. My question is, how would you design a mechanic to unify the tribe more? Elves love making mana, hydras love them some +1/+1 counters, and Aetherborn _______

The perfect mechanic for them would probably be Vanishing. They’re only on the battlefield for a limited amount of time.

Increasing Non-Evergreen Keywords

New 30 May 2021 Asked by mois113 61 Comments

We are getting 10-20 new non-evergreen keywords every year? And we all hope the game will live for another 28 years at least. And even today you can see players, not only beginners, mix up fading and vanishing, forgetting that the opposing gargadon gets hast after the last time counter. When a card has no space issues (Chatterstorm?), the potential downsides of not having that little italic line of text become huge. And with every year it's more of a mental burden, for enfranchised players too.

The main versions - which accounts for 98+% of all copies of the card - have the reminder text. We’re talking about the booster fun versions that will be seen by a tiny portion of the audience, mostly enfranchised people.

Ashiok's Erasure in White

Would ashiok's erasure be white if it had vanishing/ fading?

It moves it closer to white.

Theros Visit Plans

New 11 Jan 2020 Asked by polluxr 28 Comments

Also, given how much love there is for Theros (and how much stuff is still left to cover), was there ever a plan to make it a two-set visit again? I for one wouldn't be opposed to it, specially if it gave us more gods/titans and (still holding up to my fading hope for) lore.

We can return, but this was always planned as a single set visit.

Fading/Vanishing Popularity

Was Fading/Vanishing popular for a negative ability?

Not so much.

Mechanics Confusion

New 30 Apr 2017 Asked by zwomally 27 Comments

You've often talked about Vanishing being a fixed Fading. Now that both exist, though, do you consider it a mistake since more casual players now can run into either mechanic? Doesn't adding Fading cause more confusion in a world where Vanishing could be just as prevelent?

We design for the future more than for the past.

Liliana's Fading Tattoos

New 20 Feb 2017 Asked by mrmoustachemm 103 Comments

Where have Liliana's tattoos gone? Every new set they seem to be less and less visible. Are the tattoos being retconned out or something?

I believe the tattoos are only visible when she’s casting Magic.

Vanishing vs Fading

New 16 Feb 2017 Asked by askdarkpony 31 Comments

Just saw the posts saying Vanishing was a fix for Fading. What was broken on it? I played Nemesis when released and the local players in my city (which I know, it's just anecdotical) never had issues to understand how it worked.

Many players thought that the Fading cards left when you removed the last counter rather than when you couldn’t remove a counter. The former is a lot more intuitive.

Suspend vs Fading

New 16 Feb 2017 Asked by haaaaaaaaave-you-met-ted 18 Comments

Was Suspend an attempt to "fix" Fading?

No, Vanishing was an attempt to fix Fading.

Downside Mechanics Appeal

New 28 Jan 2017 Asked by feeishkane-blog 21 Comments

I love downside mechanics like echo and fading. Are these kind of mechanics (generally) on a swinging pendulum or are they more like a some times food?

Downside mechanics have historically always tested poorly included the two you name.

Fading Mechanic in Kaladesh

Was there any consideration given to bringing back Fading/Vanishing on Kaladesh? It seems like a good fit for the Aetherborn.

No space.

Name vs Mechanic Changes

New 24 Sep 2016 Asked by mgmegadog 28 Comments

There are minor changes between Fear and Intimidate/Chroma and Devotion/Fading and Vanishing. Have we had a name change without a mechanical change?

I don’t think so.Anyone?

Mechanic Name Changes

New 23 Sep 2016 Asked by the--zubatman 47 Comments

What are the difficulties that come with changing the name for a mechanic? Bushido, for example, seems like would be easier to use with another name. Has a change been done before?

We’ve basically done it a few times. Fading became Vanishing. Fear became Intimidate. Chroma became Devotion.

Aetherborn Vanishing

New 18 Sep 2016 Asked by johnny-spaghetti 32 Comments

If we ever saw Aetherborn on another plane, could they have the Vanishing mechanic?

Possibly. Note that Vanishing/Fading have never been all that popular.
