Understanding DFC Card Rules

New 28 Jul 2024 Asked by zozocracked 5 Comments

Can the rules handle a DFC that both can be cast on either side AND transforms between them?

The Transformers cards did something like that. The rules need to be tweaked to do both cleanly.

Jargon Miscommunication Issue

New 19 Jul 2024 Asked by mrmoustachemm 11 Comments

"Design blog -> designer language." - That's reasonable. What isn't reasonable is expecting every player to know your jargon. Try meeting us halfway. If someone asks about power creep, and you know they mean power churn, correct the term, but also answer the question that you know is being asked. (Same with "flip cards" when you know they mean DFCs, or other instances of jargon that players may use incorrectly.) Otherwise you come off as dismissive, or incapable of understanding our concerns.

I don’t always know what you mean. And often I’m answering questions in between living my life, so my attention is not always 100%. I tend to answer what is literally being asked. Sometimes I can catch when the asker means something different, but often I don’t. I’m not being dismissive or incapable of understanding your concerns. I’m just a busy guy multitasking. What this means is if you use other terminology sometimes I’ll catch it, but often I won’t. If you ask about flip cards, I’ll usually talk about flip cards. I’ve been doing this blog for over ten years (answering over 150,000 questions), and I’ve found this thing that makes people happiest is me getting to their question, so I try answer as many as I can. If I misunderstand you question, ask again and let me know what I misunderstood.

Batching Cards Potential?

New 16 Jul 2024 Asked by otto-von-bensmarck-blog 1 Comments

Hi Mark, could the rules batch cards that have two different spells on them? Can they mechanically group together split cards, certain MDFCs, cards with adventures?

We for sure can list it out. I don’t know if the rules can handle the description.

Hybrid Mechanic in MH3

New 07 Jul 2024 Asked by mistershinyobject 3 Comments

Why were the two-color MDFC lands in MH3 hybrid? The point of hybrid is "or" not "and," but the backside gives you that other mana anyway. What's the point of a card that says "you don't have to play mana sources of this other color" while also giving you a mana source of that color?

The point is you can play it in a deck of either color without having to support the second color in the deck.

Including Non Siege Battles

New 21 Jun 2024 Asked by aalgot 8 Comments

In ONE you should realy have included at least one non siege battle to make the fact that only sieges are defended by opponents and have two sides clear, several people including the YouTuber nikachu (who you shouldn’t check out because he does custom card reviews but is a good example of this) just don’t get it (as proven in any custom card reviews stream where he reviews any of the several non siege battles of different types made by the community)

Normally, we we introduce a new thing we limit how it gets used. For instance, we thought up MDFCs when we first put made TDFCs, but took our time putting it into a product. I believe including both in the same product would have been a mistake.

Compliments for Modern Horizons 3

I would like some compliments/high fives sent to everyone who worked on the mdfc lands in Modern Horizons 3. I love the flavor text showing little bits of lore across the planes. ALSO THEY LOOK SO PRETTY.Two of my favorites are the izzet and simic taplands. The cards look so good!

High fives shall be applied.

Technical Terms over Public Vernacular

New 19 Jun 2024 Asked by mrmoustachemm 16 Comments

"Power creep is an actual term used in game design, so I’m going by the technical definition." - I think this is a problem: you're too hyper-focused on the specific jargon you use at work, and forget that the general public uses terms more generally. (e.g. you used to have this issue when people referred to DFCs as "flip" cards, although you did eventually learn what they meant.) I suggest working at understanding how the public uses these terms vs. the jargon you use at work.

This blog was started, so I can talk about game design. I’m using the technical terms because I’m trying to give you an insight into how we make the game. Vernacular speech causes confusion, and clarity is important to me. This is how we talk at work. This is how I choose to talk on my blog. That’s the power of starting your own blog. You get to dictate the rules of how it functions. : )I do hear what people are saying. I’m not trying to deny their reality. I’m just trying to accurately label it in technical terms. Anywhere outside this blog, feel free to label things however you like. On this blog, for clarity, we’re using technical terms.

Planeswalker, Modern Horizons 3 Query

New 17 Jun 2024 Asked by jjustin1379 4 Comments

Why was there no traditional planeswalker in modern horizons 3?

Because we used the slots for the DFC cycle that players have been asking for since Magic Origins. The set only got five planeswalkers, so if we wanted a cycle, we needed them all.

Proportions of Double-Faced Cards

New 13 Jun 2024 Asked by lumideluxe 5 Comments

Do sets with double-faced cards generally want a certain proportion of cards to be DFCs?

Double-faced cards have to be on their own sheet, so the sheet math dictates their as-fan. We have some wiggle room with how many cards of each rarity we have, but the collation math steers as-fan.

Evoke and Channel Mechanics Difference

New 04 Jun 2024 Asked by gevth 19 Comments

Evoke, channel, sorceries and instants with kicker that make tokens and some MDFC are all mechanics that allow you to play a “sorcery” with a chance of making a creature if you have the mana. What are the factors between choosing one over the others?I’m specially intrigued on the reason for creating evoke when channel already existed.

Channel was probably a mistake in that it’s listing something we do all the time, something that doesn’t want an ability word. The only reason we brought it back in Neon Dynasty is we wanted returning mechanics and our choices were slim.We like having different tools available, which allows us to customize use to match the needs of the set.

Creatures or Tokens in Sagas

New 01 Jun 2024 Asked by singerofw 36 Comments

Assuming both options are equally valid in a given set, would you rather have a Saga that flips into a creature or a Saga that makes a unique token on the final chapter?

Double-faced cards (which I assume is what you meant as flip cards couldn’t possibly work on a Saga) allow more design freedom as we’re much more limited what text we can put on a token, but DFCs have larger logistical and production issues, so there will be sets where it isn’t an option, and tokens are what we would do.Basically, both are good, but have different limitations, so it depends what other things your set is doing.

Meld Cards in MH3 Design

New 29 May 2024 Asked by lordmohses 29 Comments

Hi Mark,Were meld cards ever considered for MH3?

I do believe other DFC designs were made in vision design. I’’m not sure if that included Meld. It might have.

DFC Count in March

New 29 May 2024 Asked by beechdallama 22 Comments

"25 is a decent amount, comparative to other DFC sets." There were 61 dfcs in March of the Machine

March of the Machine had two different DFC sheets, one for Battles and one for the rest, so it’s twice of a normal DFC set. Innistrad, the set that introduced DFCs had 28.

DFC Sheet Rarity Guidelines

New 28 May 2024 Asked by bassimelwakil 20 Comments

I can’t find uncut DFC sheets and I was wondering when you have DFCs (or other bonus sheets), what general principles can you give us for rarities and number of cards for our custom sets? It seems to change every time, but are their guidelines that we can understand like how many cards can be on a sheet or if multiple rarities are on a sheet, how many times a a single card of a rarity must appear on that sheet? Just so we can approximate something close to the restrictions you have. If only to breed creativity. ;)

Just pick your favorite DFC set and use those numbers. The DFC sheet numbers are all about collation and having cards show up at the right ratio, and we don’t get into collation specifics.

MH3 DFC and MDFC Variety

New 28 May 2024 Asked by rowanalpha 61 Comments

When you first previewed MH3 you made a big deal about the inclusion of DFCs. I was hoping that meant we’d get a big variety of MDFCs and TDFCs and - especially as a pauper player - some MDFCs at common. Having just the 5 flipwalkers and 20 mdfc lands is a lot less both in quantity and variety than I thought we might see.

25 is a decent amount, comparative to other DFC sets. I agree the variety is on the low side, but it did do the two most popular executions, the DFC planeswalkers and MDFC lands.

Monocolor Set Features

New 27 May 2024 Asked by zbaschtian 5 Comments

If/(foreseeable future)When: New Monocolored Matters set. I know you already did this with Morningtide/Eventide, and I don't consider Adamant or Devotion to lead to the gameplay patterns we're discussing. Most likely hybrid, colorless, cycling and/or DFC/Split Card focused to support limited.

When for sets with monocolor themes. I’m not quite sure what you want if devotion doesn’t count.

Planeswalkers DFC Symbols

New 27 May 2024 Asked by tanknspank 10 Comments

Do you know why the planeswalkers in MH3 use the generic triangle symbol for DFCs instead of the one used in Magic Origins and M19?

I think we’re moving towards all DFCs using the triangles and not making unique symbols for different flavors of DFCs.

Flip Ugin Consideration

New 25 May 2024 Asked by cle-guy 4 Comments

Was a flip Ugin ever considered for MH3?

I have no knowledge of a DFC Ugin being considered.

MDFC Design Logic

New 24 May 2024 Asked by aalgot 8 Comments

Why is one side is a MDFC arbitrarily considered the “Front”? unlike with transform cards that doesn’t seem necessary. But I may just be missing something.

The rules have to have a designated front and back. It has to specifically be something in each zone. For example, if it’s in your library, and it’s a creature on front and a land on back, you can’t tutor for the land, but you can tutor for the creature.

Land MDFC Frequency

New 24 May 2024 Asked by doopboopdoop 4 Comments

Could you see land mdfc being deciduous?

DFCs already are.
