Secret Lair Interactions

How does the misspelled secret lair doom blade interact with rnds secret lair? Is it still a crime?

It is still a crime. The typo doesn’t keep the card from working.

Yes.

Misspelled Card Ruling

New 05 May 2024 Asked by zbaschtian 23 Comments

Does the misspelled Secret Lair Doom Blade count as a crime (for rules purposes, not against the English language)? "I am not targeting, I am targeeting."

It’s still a crime. All cards with the same English name has the same Oracle text.

Strength of Green in Limited

New 26 Apr 2024 Asked by two-blue-stripes 45 Comments

Can I ask you to pass on feedback to the testing teams for limited to please stop giving Green such pushed removal? Green removal is almost always "Bite" rather than "Fight" effects now, often pumps the creature (sometimes permanently), usually for three and sometimes even two mana, and often at instant speed.

The trade-off for this used to be that Green's removal was vulnerable and conditional because it was reliant on creatures, but Green's creatures are so pushed these days and limited is so creature focused that cards like Throw from the Saddle and Clear Shot play just like Doom Blade and Murder, comparable or better to what Black (the "removal colour") gets.

I worry that it distorts the roles the colour pie plays in limited magic. It certainly detracts from my enjoyment of it.

Green historically has been the weakest limited color. We’re trying to help fix that.

Green Power Spells

New 22 Feb 2024 Asked by moonsliceman 25 Comments

I've been playing Standard on Arena, and Master's Rebuke feels so much like Doom Blade it's stopped being funny. With the overall increased power numbers in green, bite spells feel very pushed, and frankly, they don't strike me as green feeling either. Could I request a return to fight spells?

The increase in bite spells comes from play design needs. From a color pie perspective, it still hits the core green necessity that green is reliant on its creatures.

Doom Blade Misinterpretation

New 30 Dec 2022 Asked by mtgstarwizard 43 Comments

Can you elaborate on why Doom Blade would be Esper? The effect seems to fit better in either Mardu (B and W destroy creatures and R has damage, which is close to destroy when it's a big ammount) or Grixis (Nonblack clause: Black + its allies)

Not Doom Blade, Doom, as in Doctor Doom, Fantastic Four villain.

Thoughts on Unholy Heat

New 05 Mar 2022 Asked by ultra-chocolatebouquetkid 23 Comments

Hi Mark, I hope you're having a good week. What are your thoughts on the card Unholy Heat? I've heard many players say it's too close to a red Doom Blade. And yes, I know there is the Delirium hoop to jump through before you get the 6 damage. But in Eternal formats like Historic and Modern, this happens incidentally. What do you think? Does this card bypass Red struggling against high toughness creatures?

6 is the upper limit for red direct damage. The hoop should matter for some portion of the game, although I get how it might be easier late game.

Casted vs Cast Discrepancy

New 21 Feb 2022 Asked by thornthallid 54 Comments

Hi Mark,I've recently heard and read a lot of Magic content in which someone uses the word "casted", e.g. "my opponent casted a Doom Blade".To the best of my knowledge, the past tense of cast is cast, so "my opponent cast a Doom Blade". I just wanted to double-check with an authority in the area though - casted, or cast?Okay, you got me, I'm not really checking, it's definitely cast. I'm just hoping your blog can help turn the tide against this egregious misuse of language!

The past form of cast is cast. Blogatog is pro-grammar.

Potential for More Mystical Archives

New 19 Apr 2021 Asked by inanimateau 40 Comments

Hi Mark, Stixhaven limited is great and I love the mystical archive. It just makes everything feel dangerous.... I’m doing so well... oh they have a Doom Blade. Do you think most sets could support something like this (I.e. selected reprints that shakeup the designed set?)

Let’s start with other before we get to most.

Hybrid Rules Analysis

New 26 Jul 2019 Asked by 80sreckless 139 Comments

Hi Mark. Regarding the issue of hybrid in commander. I feel like the problem is misconstrued. The reason that its an and instead of an or is not about the casting but its state on the battlefield. For example if you play a golgari longlegs it doesn't matter if you pay with all green mana, your opponent can't doom blade it because its black. Unless hybrid changes in such a way that it isn't the case then the deck building rule should stay as is.

Here’s the problem. You make the decision at deck construction so it’s thought of in that regard not as a color on the battlefield issue. If I have a monoblack deck in any format other than Commander/Brawl (and I mean literally every other Magic formats - and there are a lot), you can play your black hybrid card. But let’s examine, the color on the battlefield argument. Does the Commander rules keep you from having permanents on the battlefield that are a color not in your color identity? No, it doesn’t. There are numerous cards that are additional colors or change colors. There are lots of cards that make tokens of a different color than itself. As long as those cards don’t have a mana symbol of another color, you’re free to play them. So trying to justify the hybrid rule with that doesn’t work because it’s not consistent with how the color identity rules work with cards of other colors. That’s my whole point. Rules for what a format allows want consistency (and also intuitiveness, although I’d argue that is very tied to consistency), and the hybrid rules fail badly in the consistency department. As a game designer who cares a great deal about games being consistent and intuitive, it rubs me the wrong way. The better argument path to pursue, by the way, is why it needs to be inconsistent not that it isn’t inconsistent.

Defining Doom Blade

I've been wondering this since I started playing in 2010... what exactly is a "Doom Blade"?

It’s a magical blade that if you see it coming your way spells your doom.

Hexproof Ability Potential

New 17 Jul 2018 Asked by shm128iii 104 Comments

Palladia-Mors’s hexproof for a limited time after hitting the battlefield is a pretty cool ability - it helps you avoid "feel bad" situations where you finally get this big dragon out only for your opponent to immediately Murder/Doom Blade/etc. it. Sure, it's not protected indefinitely, but it guarantees you can at least do SOMETHING with it before it gets killed. Is this something we could see on more creatures in the future? If so, what colors do you think it'd be in?

What do you all think of this restricted hexproof ability?

Rules Lawyer Interaction

If you have two Rules Lawyers on the field, can they never be removed?

State based actions aren’t required for creature destruction. You can Doom Blade one of them no problem.

It does. : ) Rules Lawyer doesn’t stop state-based effects from affecting itself. Think of it as a bit quirkier Platinum Angel.

Black's Destruction Specialty

New 15 Oct 2017 Asked by nlewin 30 Comments

Are doom blade effects ("Destroy target non-black creature") still supported in black's slice of the color pie?

Yes. Black is number one in creature destruction and it can have limitations as Walk the Plank in Ixalan demonstrates.

Standard Cards Proposal

New 13 Mar 2017 Asked by mdbryan84 30 Comments

I want to thank you for taking time to answer questions and communicate with the players. So if we can't have lightning bolt back in standard, how would you feel about the following suite of cards (one for each color) being perpetually in standard: naturalize, mana leak, doom blade, lightning strike, and celestial flare?

The cards always being in flux is a core part of the game.

Black Removal Adjustments

New 20 Feb 2017 Asked by macgyvercas-deactivated20171221 20 Comments

If you removed the Non-Black rider on Black removal, does that mean no Doom Blade reprints? Sidenote, are there any 2 mana black removal spells with no restrictions? Just "two mana, this thing is dead"?

Black still has riders on cheaper spells, but the rider is no longer nonblack by default. Note that black can still use “nonblack” if it wants to.

Power Level Adjustments

New 26 Sep 2016 Asked by shadesofpink 33 Comments

Spiritkhan is asking what you think standard/limited etc would be like if you hadn't dropped the power level of instants and sorceries (eg: no one cmc kill spells like Bolt or Path, scarce numbers of two cmc counterspells like Mana Leak or Deprive, and even fewer 2 cmc kill spells like Doom Blade etc etc etc)

I think it would be worse, which is why we did it.
