Card Frames

Question on Reprinting Sets

New 19 Jul 2024 Asked by j-waffles 14 Comments

Re: “we’ve promised to not straight reprint old sets.”When you say this, do you mean that you won’t print a set with the exact same set list as an existing set? Or do you just mean that you won’t print cards that are indistinguishable from existing versions? That is to say, if you made a hypothetical “return to ravnica redux” where everything was the exact same with no changes, except all the cards had a little planeswalker stamp in the corner like the list or mystery booster, would that be fair game?

It means we won’t reprint a set with the exact same cards, frame/text upgraded or not.

Possible Return of 8ed Frame

New 17 Jul 2024 Asked by thenbnerd 4 Comments

Not sure if you're the person to ask, but

If or When - 8ed frame return in any form?

I started right before the switch to m15 frame and have been pretty bummed out seeing retro frame every couple sets, would love to see some strong cards and staples from after the switch like arcane signet, sheoldred, fatal push, etc in that frame. I'd definitely purchase any secret lair with any cards no matter how weak if they were in 8ed frame, though I'm probably in the minority there.

I’m not sure how many retro frames we can support.

Isolation of 'Level up' Keyword

New 17 Jul 2024 Asked by oooblyjooblies 3 Comments

Is it possible to use the 'Level up' keyword in isolation, without the Leveler card frame and its associated baggage? I.e. A creature with Level up that, in its rules text, attains bonuses referring to the number of Level counters it has.

I’ll say it would be unlikely.

Appreciating Artistic Touches

Shout out to the art team for the woodland showcase frame. The different foliage based on colour is a nice touch.

I’ll let them know.

Identifying Classes in Bloomburrow

New 11 Jul 2024 Asked by kothforme 5 Comments

Class is back in session for Bloomburrow. But unlike the previous classes "class" is not in the name of these cards. Was rnd not worried that without the type being found in the name that these would be mistaken for another card type at first glance?

It’s not crucial that you identify them as classes from the name. The word is on the type line and the cards have a unique frame layout.

Feedback on Full-art-only Commanders

New 10 Jul 2024 Asked by mgmegadog 4 Comments

We've had people expressing their frustrations about the full-art-only commanders, but I'd like to add my feedback that Flubs the Fool seemingly only being available in extended art is the worst offender in my opinion. Both the regular frame and as full-art would be preferable to that frame. It's genuinely my least favorite frame, and the only reason I've never complained about it is that, up until now, it's been completely avoidable.

I can pass this note along.

Supertype Instant Special Frame

New 08 Jul 2024 Asked by raytyger 9 Comments

If magic started from the begining again, do you think the supertype instant would have a special frame? Or would it be an issue with a supertype like Legendary having a special frame too?

If we started over, I think each card type would probably have its own unique frame.

Color Schemes in Character Costumes

New 08 Jul 2024 Asked by perfectcollectorduck 7 Comments

Have y'all done testing with non Magic players looking at UB characters with iconic existing color schemes in colors that clash with that scheme - Spiderman in black green to use a dramatic and probably out of pie example - and see if the frames confuse them? Do people pick up on it easily?

A character having a costume/outfit that are Magic colors doesn’t make them those colors within the game, so it doesn’t matter if some non-Magic players take time to understand it. Players grasping the color pie is an important early step in the game.

Appreciation for Bloomburrow Frame

New 08 Jul 2024 Asked by kasim18-blog 3 Comments

Can I just say how much I like the Bloomburrow Showcase frame on Hugs? It's not the same of course, but it's beautiful and reminds me of the Future Sight frame more than anything since then

I’m glad you like them.

Possibility of New Frames

New 08 Jul 2024 Asked by smrgnt-blog 31 Comments

Hi Mark,If or when: Instants/Sorceries getting their own frame like Artifacts and (nyx-bordered) enchantments do, possibly in a limited capacity to start with, as a trial run perhaps?

If, but it’s been discussed.

Enchantments Graphic Design Query

New 07 Jul 2024 Asked by oooblyjooblies 18 Comments

With Foundations making Nyx frames on Enchantments the standard, how will that combine with Enchantments that have other distinguishing frames, like Snow or Devoid? The Nyx effect is a bit different from the 'base grey' of Artifacts.

We have talented graphic design people.

Updating the Card Frames

New 06 Jul 2024 Asked by jstaal 2 Comments

In light of UB getting their own colored card frames, what do you think the likelihood is of updating the ‘textures’ of colored cards. It feels weird that basically everything else about cards have changed, but all the colors are stuck with the same pattern along their edges that they had in 2003

I don’t think constantly changing the frame is ideal. Some continuity is comforting.

Potential Return of Future Sight Frame

New 01 Jul 2024 Asked by jaqeax 6 Comments

I've seen you asked about this a lot, but do you project us ever seeing the Future Sight frame ever again? I love how unique it was and is, and I am honestly surprised MH3 didn't have a frame treatment for it, given that Modern Horizons as a concept was inspired by Time Spiral block.

I get asked about it often. We would have to find the right place to use it, but I won’t say it couldn’t happen.

Colorless Frame Usage

New 29 Jun 2024 Asked by aalgot 1 Comments

It’s something we did for the Eldrazi,Well the eldrazi are eldrich abominations, very strange templating makes sense for them. But that isn’t the case for all colorless cards. So why not just make that the eldrazi frame instead of the colorless frame?

We’ve used the colorless frame on non-Eldrazi and players seemed to like it.

Staggered Formatting Changes

New 29 Jun 2024 Asked by vedney 2 Comments

Why are these formatting changes so staggered? Enters in Bloomburrow, in Duskmourn, and the Enchantment frame in Foundations? Why not do them all together in Foundations?

It wasn’t a larger plan where we said we’re making these three changes. Each one happen organically.

Duskmourne's Aesthetic Critiques

New 29 Jun 2024 Asked by j-waffles 1 Comments

Hi mark. There were a few people who had commented on the technology and aesthetic of Duskmourne and how it feels too close to the present, referencing planes like Capenna or Neo-kamigawa as other examples of modernity in Magic’s fantasy setting. Because I am the main character and my opinion is the most important one, I thought I’d give my two cents on the topic.Although kamigawa and capenna are obviously more “modern” than a plane like innistrad, they still don’t feel like “now”. By definition, sci-fi is not modern. Although Neon kamigawa doesn’t feel like high fantasy, it doesn’t feel “modern” to me either, it’s too far in the future. In the opposite direction, Capenna feels too far in the past to feel “modern”. Yeah, arc spitter is a Tommy gun and the treasure token is a martini glass, but it still doesn’t feel like the present. My grandpa wasn’t even born until after the end of prohibition. Time period Capenna is based on was literally a century ago. Sure the aesthetic isn’t as far back in history as the aesthetic of a knight in shining armor, but it’s still far enough back that it feels like “another time”, at least to me. I think the reason those two planes pass the vibe check is because they feel different enough from modern day. TV’s have existed since the late 1920’s, so it would have been historically accurate if the plane themed around 1920s America had TVs. but that still *feeeeeels* wrong. The vibes are off. Yeah sci fi japan would probably have cell phones or something, but that just feels wrong. In other words, fantasy (to me) isn’t about looking like lord of the rings, it’s about NOT looking like everyday life. This is where Duskmourne comes in. I wasn’t alive in the 70’s or 80’s. Heck, I’m so young that my parents hadn’t even met until after homelands came out. But the 70’s and 80’s feels like modern day. Screaming nemesis and cursed recording have TVs in their art. The booster fun frame looks like it would be on a ghostbusters poster. I feel like I saw my baby cousin wearing the exact same outfit as Toby just the other day. The term “fear of missing out” is just such a modern day thing, even if that concept isn’t new. I’m withholding my judgement until I see the whole set, but based on what we’ve seen so far, I (somewhat) agree with the sentiment a lot of Duskmourne feels too “real”. I’m sure more detail will be given closer to release, but I would be really interested in learning the whole process of how y’all built this world, even more interested than I would be with any other plane.

We’re trying something new. Some people seem to like it, some don’t. Time will show whether it was overall a good idea. I will say we need time to better gauge it. There are a lot of very popular Magic things that had an initial negative opinion.

Unique Frame Treatments

New 28 Jun 2024 Asked by 1953943 11 Comments

With enchantments getting Nyx frames, any chance creatures or instants and sorceries will get unique frame treatments so every card type has its own?

No current plans, but I would have said the same thing about enchantments if you asked in the past.

Duskmourn Theme and Enchantment Frames

New 28 Jun 2024 Asked by livefromtheloam 7 Comments

Hi Mark! Two things. One, I guessed that Duskmourn would have an 80s horror movie theme and was thrilled that the preview cards look freaking sweet! Two, a huge THANK YOU to the folks responsible for giving enchantments the Nyx frame. I am very excited for Magic this year.

We did state at the Gen Con panel that announced Duskmourn that it had an 70’s and 80’s horror vibe, but I’m glad you like it. Giving enchantments the Nyx frame has been something we’ve been debating for a while. I’m glad we finally did it.I too am excited for this year. : )

Appreciation for Foundation and Duskmourn

Will do.

Frustrations Over UB Frames

New 23 Jun 2024 Asked by mois113 0 Comments

Has there been some internal debate on the UB frames yet? Because it is really frustrating to see yet another cool IP getting "wasted" because all the cards only exist in that weird metallic border, where every color looks exactly the same (literally for color blind people) and that fits maybe WH40K but not middle earth or assassins in medieval venice. I have yet to hear from someone that they think these frames were a GOOD solution.

There is internal discussion.
