New 15 May 2021 Asked by shadowstar91 33 Comments

"thekingofpho asked: Hey Mark, I requested this before, but can you make a black enchantment, with a white activated ability? Can it also include an evergreen keyword?" we have Behind the Scenes from SOI. it's a black enchantment with a white ability that grants Skulk. not evergreen but closest we have so far.

Karn's Non-artifact Classification

New 14 Feb 2021 Asked by lettuce-from-the-salad-bar 53 Comments

Why isn't Karn an Artifact Planeswalker?

Planeswalkers supersede other qualities in both types and subtypes. It’s why Ajani isn’t a Cat creature type. The behind the scenes reason is a power level one.

Defending White's Place

New 10 Jan 2020 Asked by pforpizza 73 Comments

Hi MaRo, I feel there's too much negativity about white, and I'd like to point out some facts. In Standard, it's true that W has been (by far) the worst color in the last several months, but it is a relatively recent fad. MC3 top8 last June had 6/8 decks with W, and PT Atlanta just a little over a year ago had 6 W weenie decks in top8, and only one non-W deck. In limited, it's true that in WAR, MH1 and M20 W was considered the worst color, but this isn't true for ELD, nor it was for GRN or RNA.

White does need some attention (and it is getting it behind the scenes), but yes the narrative that white is hopeless and can’t possibly be useful is a bit overblown.

Pioneer's Development

New 02 Jan 2020 Asked by 1aughing-matter-blog 33 Comments

How long has Pioneer been in the works behind the scenes? How soon will we see standard sets designed with pioneer in mind?

We’ve been aware of Pioneer for a while. Note that our knowledge of Pioneer grows the more it gets played.

White's Mechanical Pie

New 16 Dec 2019 Asked by monikermage 55 Comments

Mark, as a fan of White, it worries me when I hear about members of R&D fighting to take what little is left of White's mechanical color pie(That you seem willing to still expound upon, since heavy taxing effects and MLD have fallen out of favor since they often create un-fun gameplay) and give it to other colors(Vis a vis green getting Banisher Priest effects). Can you help assuage these concerns since I can't see everything going on behind the scenes?

Green specifically didn’t get Banisher Priest.

Hi Mark, I loved today's behind the scenes article on the Bolas arc! Looking forward to the next one.

Happy to hear you liked it.

Art Commission Strategy

New 09 Oct 2019 Asked by suigenyukiouji 28 Comments

For Seven Dwarves, could you commission one art piece to have seven dwarves in it, then crop it to only show one dwarf per card? Would that count as one new art or seven in terms of behind the scenes resource allocation?

The main issue isn’t getting seven pieces of art.

Squirrels Behind Scenes

New 10 Sep 2019 Asked by zacharyporterblr 61 Comments

Should I take the existence of mouse tokens as a sign that squirrels are on there way back? Just saying if 15 mice can kill Emrakul surely 15 squirrels could with out it being any sillier

Behind the scenes, I think we making traction on Squirrels, but Eldraine isn’t it.

Green's Squirrel Stance

New 18 Aug 2019 Asked by drsnap23 82 Comments

What does the green member of the Council of colors think about squirrels ?

Ken is pro-Squirrels. Note the strike against Squirrels isn’t “they aren’t green”, it’s a concern by the creative team that they’re a little silly for black border. And yes, as always, I’m fighting the fight behind the scenes to change that belief. I think Magic can afford to be a little lighter in tone.

Handling Feedback

New 02 Aug 2019 Asked by talos-4 58 Comments

So many people send you "I want to express my displeasure with X, people dont like X..!" asks, it's a bit tiring. Mostly because the simple and professional responce is "my dataset is non-anecdotal, people acctually do like X." My ask is twofold: could we please see fewer such asks on the blog and How donyou deal with people who think their isolated oppinion is that unflinchingly correct in the face of having no where bear your department's expertise? Your indurrance astounds me. ✌🏾

It is natural to assume that the interests of you and your playgroup are mirrored in the playerbase. I answer these types of questions so that I can share the knowledge of the data we’ve collected. People who write in (mostly) mean no ill will, they’re just surprised by some piece of information. Informing you all about how we make decisions behind the scenes is a big part of Blogatog.

Appreciation for Blog Work

New 17 Jul 2019 Asked by beowuuf 37 Comments

This is your (hopefully daily) reminder that the work you do with your blog is very much appreciated. Thank you for answering all of our questions and reading so many more unanswered ones behind the scenes!

You’re welcome. I enjoy it, I think it’s important, and it makes me better at my job. So win, win.

Planeswalking Rules

New 06 Apr 2019 Asked by celestial-uran 116 Comments

Players don't draw the lines, creative does. We were given the rules for planeswalking and Jiang Yanggu broke those rules without explanation. Nothing in MtG canon said telepathy, time magic, and transformations couldn't happen. Just some perspective.

Normally a person can’t turn into a dragon, but magic allows one particular planeswalker to break that rule. Every rule we give in universe is “as a default, this is the rule”. Behind the scenes, we are careful when we break the rules to make sure we’re not undermining the reason for the rule existing in the first place. So where does the “only planeswalkers can planeswalk” rule come from? It’s built as a means to make our core characters special. If anyone could planeswalk then it lessens the uniqueness of planeswalkers. Early Magic had this problem and it’s one of the reasons we changed things with The Mending to shut down things like portals.Does Yanggu having his dog planeswalk with him undercut the speciality of planeswalking or does it help give him a defining trait that makes him unique? We felt the latter so we allowed him having a power that breaks the default rule.

You Make the Card

New 25 Feb 2019 Asked by lucas2099 40 Comments

If or when: you make the card.

Minor When. It’s a crazy amount of work and logistics behind the scenes, but players enjoy it, so I’d guess one day we’ll do another one.

R&D Tales Timing

New 23 Feb 2019 Asked by elmdormesdoram 19 Comments

I loved R&D Tales! But is it possible to have them a little closer to the set's release? You talked about Guilds of Ravnica, but Allegiance was just released.

I recorded the videos back in October. Weird behind the scenes shenanigans kept them for getting released for a while. Note the videos were originally streamed on Black Friday on Twitch.

R&D Tales Feedback

New 21 Feb 2019 Asked by wh00---s 43 Comments

hey mark! just wanted to say that i really enjoyed both of the r&d tales videos. i think they work much better than access magic because the person leading the discussion is more in-touch with magic design. its really cool to hear from people who are usually only behind the scenes!

The goal was to allow us to be a bit more in depth for the players that like the crunchy behind-the-scenes design talk.

Insights on Bad Cards

New 12 Jan 2019 Asked by adamacus-blog 35 Comments

I was about to ask you a question about bad cards and I stumbled upon your articles "When Cards Go Bad" and "When Cards Go Bad Revisited". Not only did they answer my question but they are a great insight into game design. I also enjoyed the Lion's Eye Diamond being used as an example of a bad card!

I’m coming up on my eighteenth year of writing “Making Magic”. There’s a lot of content there for players who are interested in game design or behind the scenes of Magic design.

Behind Scenes Mechanics

New 03 Jan 2019 Asked by thegreatmill 75 Comments

I love that you've started talking about the mechanics behind the scenes. Absolutely love it. So fascinating to follow. And I'll still appreciate the surprise when it shows up in the future, I reckon.

Let’s hope so.How do others feel? (In my article today, I shared a bunch of mechanics we didn’t use.)

Villain Variety Request

New 11 Dec 2018 Asked by gobeast37 57 Comments

May I ask for more variety in MTG villains? I had "eldrazi fatigue" after Zendikar+Innistrad. Then, I got Bolas fatigue after Kaladesh+Amonkhet+Ixalan+Ravnica. MTG has other interesting villains that I'd like to meet up with, like garruk, phyrexia, nahiri, and even Tibalt. I hope I do not come across as rude, but I've grown tired of two years of bolas.

While Bolas has been the villain behind the scenes, he’s actually appeared only twice, Hour of Devastation and very briefly at the end of Dominaria. Every set other than Hour of Devastation has had one or more villains that weren’t Bolas. If you want to argue for less connected stories (which thematically ties Bolas to other villains), that’s fine, but a lack of villains hasn’t actually been an issue.

Planeswalker Dinosaur Wishes

New 10 Sep 2018 Asked by antiquearistocrat 66 Comments

Hi Mark, Dismissing requests for a non-humanoid, non-anthropormorphized planeswalker as "wanting weird for the sake of weird" seems really disingenuous. If someone wants a planeswalking T-Rex it may not be because they want something weird or not-the-norm, they might just like t-rexes. People can like things and want to see those things just because they like them and not to appear weird or unique. Respectfully, Me

I’m not trying to dismiss anybody’s jam. I truly get the excitement for something different. One of my roles as the person behind the scenes answering questions is trying to explain that planeswalkers serve a lot of important functions in the game and why certain requests are harder to meet than others. What I’m interested in understanding is what a planeswalker dinosaur does that a legendary Dinosaur doesn’t?

Legends Design Challenge

New 19 Aug 2018 Asked by steamsteam-deactivated20180923 33 Comments

I too, as a commander player, wish for the removal of the legend baggage so that we may get a tremendous number of new legends per year. Two questions however; Will it lead to weaker legends overall And how is the battle going, behind the scenes?

At worst, minimally weaker. Most of the time, no weaker. It’s not going well behind the scenes. I do not have a lot of allies on this topic.
