Unleash Return Odds

How likely is for Unleash to return in a standard set?

I’d call it a 5 on the Storm Scale.

Keyword Possibilities

New 23 Jan 2024 Asked by raytyger 24 Comments

Considering more and more tokens (Mites, Fungus) and mechanics (Decayed, Suspect, if we look back Unleash) nowadays are mentioning "can't block" , has R&D discussed making it a keyword like Defender?

“Can’t block” is pretty short, so we wouldn’t save much space.

Downside of Unleash Mechanic

New 07 Jan 2022 Asked by ebonstone 21 Comments

"Technically, that’s a downside, but it’s minimal in its limitations. "I treated unleash creatures as if they could not block. After my opponent put a counter on my unleash defender to finish me off.

Yes, it was possible and it’s memorable, so the one time it happened, you remember it, but it actually happened a very small percentage of the time.

View on Unleash Mechanic

For the person asking about why people like Dash, it's not actually what I would call a downside mechanic. It's like Evoke, where you are given an option to get some value from the card, but not the full value, and in exchange you get a discount. Dash/Evoke are very much Kicker, taking after Skizzik. Paying the "kicker" of the full price of the creature removes the sacrifice/bounce clause it would otherwise have.

Opting into a downside to get an upside is different than having no option.

Opinion on Unleash Ruling

New 06 Jan 2022 Asked by ulrichvonsigwin 23 Comments

On the subject of unleash being a downside mechanic: here what the ruling say about it. A creature with unleash can't block if it has any +1/+1 counter on it, not just one put on it by the unleash ability.

Technically, that’s a downside, but it’s minimal in its limitations.

Comparing Unleash and Dash Mechanics

New 06 Jan 2022 Asked by doopboopdoop 32 Comments

Any idea why players considered unleashed a downside mechanic but not dash?

I don’t think unleash is seen as downside as you can opt out.

Legendary Monkey in RG

New 14 Dec 2021 Asked by morithealchemist 68 Comments

I feel like the biggest problem with Magic right now is that there is still no legendary Monkey in RG, so edh players can not yet unleash their full monkey power. Are you working on fixing this glaring issue?

It’s on our “Serious Issues That Must Be Addressed” List. : )

Potential Kicker Evergreen

New 04 Nov 2021 Asked by jimharbor 30 Comments

Have you ever thought of making kicker or something similar evergreen as a way to fold all the various kicker set mechanics together? So for example, Dash, Awaken, Surge, Unleash etc would all use this keyword in specific ways instead of being their own keywords.

That would just make sets feel more similar.

High Five Collection Suggestion

New 21 Mar 2020 Asked by pikachaochao-blog 50 Comments

Instead of virtual high fives may I suggest you hold them all back and unleash them all or once when you get back into the office

I don’t want to harm anyone. : )

Riot and Spectacle Origins

New 30 Dec 2018 Asked by deg99 46 Comments

Was there any point where Riot was considered for Rackdos and Spectacle was considered for Gruel? That combination would have felt reminiscent of their previous mechanics Bloodthirst and Unleash.

The precursor to Spectacle started as a Gruul mechanic. I’ll tell the whole tale in my preview columns.

Ravnica Mechanics Approach

New 21 Dec 2018 Asked by jhoald 48 Comments

We've now seen all 5 mechanics and none of them are entirely new. A Bloodthirst, Monstrous, and Unleash variant. Keywording the text on cards like doomed traveller and careful consideration (and many other cards for each of them). Ravnica had always been the plane where crazy mechanics were tried out: Cipher, Extort, Detain, Haunt, and Transmute just to name a few. What caused such a safe and familiar approach this time? It makes the set feel more like a core set than a new and exciting one.

Ravnica is more about the innovations of the guilds than of the guild mechanics. A set with five mechanics forces us to keep the mechanics simple.

Edible Ink Query

Is the vanilla mythic going to be printed with edible ink that tastes like vanilla?

Don’t eat the cards! Don’t make me unleash the lawyers.

Ravnica's Unique Appeal

New 23 Jun 2016 Asked by silpheed-tandy 53 Comments

i'm also in the camp that feels that blocks tend to feel "Set up a cool place, then unleash a threat that threatens the world". RTR and RTRTR show that the character of the environment on its own can create a much loved setting. (and for what it's worth, i really love the four Morningtide etc sets).

Ravnica has proven to be a rare thing that serves as a poor precedent for other worlds.

Ravnica Mechanics Rating

What's the storm-scale for each of the Return to Ravnica mechanics? -- Detain, Cipher, Unleash, Bloodrush, Populate, Extort, Overload, Scavenge, Battalion, and Evolve?

Bloodthirst vs Unleash

New 03 May 2016 Asked by csick3108-deactivated20201213 37 Comments

In your Storm Scale article, you said bloodthirst has large design space, while unleash only has medium design space, but both designs, you said, can go on any creature. Why the difference?

Bloodthirst is usable on more creatures. Unleash works best on small creatures because the delta of a +1/+1 counter matters more.

Opinion on Bees

Robo-Blogatog: So how do you feel about bees?

R&D would have to be hit by a bus before we unleash the bees.

Mechanics Evolution

New 26 Jun 2015 Asked by aazadan 16 Comments

Why did you guys change from mechanics like Unleash where the counter was tied to the cards status to mechanics like Monstrous and Renown where the cards status and the counter are independent of each other?

Unleash has a much narrower variance so we were able to let people affect them by putting a counter in it.

Standard Counter Balance

New 06 Apr 2015 Asked by deetsposts 33 Comments

Can we tone down the number of +1/+1 counters in standard? I know I'm in the minority, but I dislike them. After Undying, then Evolve, Unleash and Scavenge, then Heroic, and now Outlast and Megamorph, I'd really like to be able to play without always pulling out a bag of dice.

We try to ebb and flow the use of +1/+1 counters. They’re very popular and have a lot of design depth and flexibility, but we do have to be careful not to overuse them.

Hellbent or Unleash Return

What's more likely to return first? Hellbent or Unleash?

Unleash.

Dash Mechanic Origin

New 04 Jan 2015 Asked by fullfurian 40 Comments

Was dash ever considered to be the rakdos mechanic in rtr because it seems like it would be the perfect fit because rakdos being about showman ship the act enters, does their performance (attacks) then leaves sooo much more fitting than unleash

We didn’t come up with it until Dragons of Tarkir design, so no.
