Ward Costs Overview

New 10 Jul 2024 Asked by theonetrueqriist 16 Comments

Regarding the hypothetical Ward costs that give opponents an upside instead of directly costing you anything, there's at least one card which does that repeatedly: Wall of Shards has an opponent of your choice gain life as a cumulative upkeep cost. This demonstrates that the game already treats benefiting your opponents as a cost.

Just because a card was printed once that does something doesn’t mean all problems with that thing were solved. Wards have to be costs and another player doing something isn’t a cost.

Request for MTGO Results Publicity

New 06 Jul 2024 Asked by myfavoriteflavorisblue 6 Comments

Hey Maro, I understand this is a bit out of your wheelhouse, but you're the one I can reach! I would hugely appreciate it if MTGO results data returned to being public. If that's not feasible, I'd happily take your best guess as to why not, if applicable. Thanks for your time.

This is a guess as it’s an area outside of my expertise. If there’s too much data, formats just get “solved” much faster and there’s less time for players to explore formats.

Mimicking Last Strike

New 11 Apr 2024 Asked by luckbuck13 25 Comments

I feel like last strike can be solved by having a creature with an activated ability that can only be used when the creature dies, and only targets a creature that dealt it combat damage. Would this work?

There are wordy ways to roughly mimic it, but that’s not quite the same.

MKM Puzzles Podcast

New 19 Mar 2024 Asked by mindsuckr 27 Comments

Any chance on getting another Drive to Work on the MKM Puzzles? Now that the 13 puzzles are fully revealed and solved, I would love a behind the scenes look at how you did it all. Art direction on cards with past Ravnica connections, red herrings you planted, things people may have missed, puzzles you thought about doing, etc. Also, we noticed that The Agency has a moto around its logo that used the same letter characters as the "wanted posters" in art. Did this have a direct translation?

I could bring Mark Gottlieb back on. I don’t know about the wanted poster.

Substance Mechanic Future

If/when: more cards with Substance?

If. Substance was created to solve a problem that we later solved better.

Solving Cases

New 28 Jan 2024 Asked by barbarian-gamer 44 Comments

I got this real nitpick of a player who insists that you have to solve Cases the turn you cast it, not on a future turn. Some BS about "The second ability doesn't check each turn, only at the end step the turn you cast it, or it would explicitly say so, like for Sagas. If the condition isn't true when the ability resolves that turn, the Case won't become solved, ever again." I told him it's like another Enchantment, you don't HAVE to say each turn. Who's right?

You are correct. You can solve cases on future turns, not just the turn you cast it.

Case Templating Feedback

New 20 Jan 2024 Asked by jozogozo 32 Comments

Some feedback: The reminder text on cases feels too vague to me. My interpretation was that they were automatically solved if you met the condition or at the beginning of your endstep, whichever came first. In my head, the flavor was you know the answer immediately (the special condition) or you spend time thinking about it (solved at endstep).

The fact that some people are confused by the Case templating has been passed along to the proper people.

Puzzle Error Check

New 17 Jan 2024 Asked by beepboopmew 23 Comments

I'm worried the bonus puzzle in today's Making Magic has an error in it. The clue in Jeremy Geist's bio should have a negative number, but even swapping the order there, I repeatedly get contradictions from the clues, and I've not seen anyone else having solved it.

I’m checking with Gottlieb. You do realize the person writing in first person in the bios is Gottlieb and not me, correct?NOTE: There are two mistakes Erik’s and Jeremy’s. They have now been fixed in the puzzle. Sorry about that.

Memory Mechanics Commentary

New 16 Jan 2024 Asked by earthunyielding 21 Comments

I would like to note that I find it strange that it's been reiterated that design avoids mechanics that rely on memory and prefer to use counters and having new mechanics like "suspect" and "solve" release that require you to remember that the creature permanently has menace and can't block or that the enchantment is permanently "solved". It's very confusing to get information that this kind of design is bad and to be avoided and then to have it show up in a premier set twice.

When we have a set that has punch out counters as a memory aide, we allow some stuff we don’t in sets that don’t.

Zimone's Astrophysics Trivia

New 11 Oct 2023 Asked by j-waffles 89 Comments

Fun trivia fact! In the flavor text for blue suns zenith from mystical archive, zimone is quoted as wanting to calculate the orbital mechanics of New Phyrexia and the 5 suns. This means 2 things. First, it means mirrodin is one of the only planes confirmed to have an outer space. And second, this flavor text shows that zimone has solved the n-bodies problem, making her a better astrophysicist than every astrophysicist ever in the real world. I just think that’s neat.

Time Lord Naming

New 08 Oct 2023 Asked by iamthespineofmybook 46 Comments

I keep thinking that the two word situation of the "Time Lord" creature type could have been solved by referring to them as "Gallifreyan."Gallifrey is/was the Doctor and Master's home planet, and not everyone from that world was a Time Lord or Lady.I know it's far too late to change it, but that's what I probably would have done. That being said, I just did a quick search, and it seems that canon for Doctor Who was a bit inconsistent from time to time, as it both said that "not every Gallifreyan is a Time Lord" and, numerous times, that the species name was "Time Lord."

As with any Universes Beyond product, we work with the licensee who is the expert on the property to make sure we’re using the correct terminology.

Time-Lord Typography

New 08 Oct 2023 Asked by wk-vylion 40 Comments

I feel like the "2 word creature type problem" could've been easily solved by writing it as "Time-Lord". What did stop you from just putting a dash in there joining the two words? Was being consistent with the original material that important?

Yes. Matching the source material is highly important.

Keyword Problem Magnified

Would the problem of "Investigate" be solved by giving the other two popular tokens similar keywords, or would that be worse?

That makes the problem worse, not better.

Rules for Vanilla Creatures

New 13 Apr 2023 Asked by banksyguythrowingthings 44 Comments

"Creatures with no abilities can only be blocked by creatures with flying" / "Creatures with no abilities deal combat damage as if they had trample" - There! Solved it! Next problem? 😉

Rules have to be written so not only the rules work, but also so the players can comprehend what the rules are saying. An ability that grants an ability to a Vanilla creature, but technically it doesn’t, is not a recipe for success.

Trigger Wording Discussion

New 28 Feb 2023 Asked by tqmurdock 25 Comments

Mark how much of the objection to increasing use of "once per turn" triggers and suggestions to rearrange the wording would be solved by replacing the word "only"? Is that what makes people feel like they are losing something instead of gaining something - could it be "this ability triggers if it hasn't already this turn" instead of "triggers only once"?

I’m not sure the extra words get us enough.

Regeneration Complexity

New 14 Feb 2023 Asked by nothingbutland-blog 37 Comments

Would making Regeneration a triggered ability that when this creature dies: trigger if cost is paid, remove all damage and creature stays on the battlefield tapped? Wouldn't that have solved the flavor? Then the billion removal spells that prevent Regeneration would just keep the trigger from happening.

The fix is not as simple as it seems. If it were, we would have made the change.

Draftable Releases Strategy

Yeah, I guess.

Legend Rule Issue

New 25 Dec 2022 Asked by trollmore 77 Comments

For those of us out of the loop, what’s the issue as you see it with the Legend rule? Naively, any problems it causes can be solved by making the card not legendary.

Here’s the classic problem. I design a cool build-around card. Commander wants it to be legendary because it wants it to be the commander. 4-of formats want it to not be legendary, so you can play multiples and not draw dead cards.

Meld Mechanic in Draft

New 30 Sep 2022 Asked by 4blackout 35 Comments

I was incredibly excited for Meld to return, as I felt it wasn't given a proper chance to shine back in Eldritch Moon. But hearing there are only three pairs again is very disappointing. What made it not work in draft? Couldn't the as-fan be solved by seeding each pack with one side of a Meld pair?

I swear we did try. It’s just a lot harder to make work than it might appear.
