Cauldron Dance Card Background

New 01 May 2024 Asked by arcanistlupus 30 Comments

Invoking the sacred rite of birthday trivia, do you have any trivia about Cauldron Dance? It's always been my favorite reanimation spell.

One of the things I enjoy is taking two effects that reflect one another on some vector. I had made Sneak Attack in Urza’s Saga and numerous one shot reanimation spells. I realized if I made the Sneak Attack effect return to hand at end of turn instead of sacrificing it, the two effects would put a creature from that zone on the battlefield with haste and then, at end of turn, return them to the zone it came from.Happy Birthday!

Perception of Urza Block Ostracization

New 17 May 2022 Asked by rekian 42 Comments

In a recent poll in Twitter listing top 4 sets in MTG history, Urza’s Saga and block as a whole received a spot in a lot of them, almost on pair with Invasion, Innistrad or Ravnica. Nonetheless, it seems WOTC still ostracizes the block. So, so many memorable cards that helped define so many decks: Carpet of Flowers, Sneak Attack, Show and Tell, Gaea’s Cradle, Serra’s Sanctum, Gilded Drake, Yawgmoth’s Will, Grim Monolith, Crop Rotation, Frantic Search, Replenish, Academy Rector, Opalescence, Yawgmoth’s Bargain, Powder Keg, Rofellos… and I could go on and on. I love that beautiful, relaxed, cartoony artwork too. Any love for Urzas Block here?

How exactly do we “ostracize” Urza’s block?

Planebound Accomplice Design

New 22 May 2019 Asked by superjesus101 27 Comments

Did you design Planebound Accomplice? He works with Doubling Season so well.

I designed the card it’s a riff on - Sneak Attack. I don’t think I designed Planebound Accomplice, but between the Hackathon and vision design, I made a lot cards, so it’s possible.

B.F.M. Ruling

New 16 Mar 2019 Asked by parc2 33 Comments

un-rules question: B.F.M., in regards to sneak attack youve said "B.F.M. Is considered one creature card, but you have to have both halves in the same zone (hand, graveyard, library, battlefield, etc.)", and in regards to show and tell, "No, because you can only choose one card and in your hand B.F.M. is still two cards". reading through rulings, you go back and forth as to B.F.M.'s state as one or two creature cards in non-battlefield zones, do you have a definitive ruling?

My Sneak Attack answer is the correct one. If a card is looking for a creature card in another zone and both halves of B.F.M. are there, the card in question can find the “creature”.

Black-Bordered Cheatyface

New 04 May 2018 Asked by gibsoncat9-blog 25 Comments

I think the asker meant would you ever make a black-bordered creature that could *only* be put into play via cards like Reanimate or Sneak Attack.

No. Cheatyface technology is as silver-bordered as it comes.

Magikal Cards Mention

New 20 Apr 2018 Asked by tanteoctopus-blog 66 Comments

The webcomic El Goonish Shive has a card game called "Magikal Cards". One story arc is focused around a duel between a mono-green ramp deck featuring not-Bird of Paradise, not-Llanowar Elves, and not-Overwhelming Stampede against an "Olde School" not-Sneak Attack deck. A later arc features a draft tournament for not-Innistrad.

BFM Mechanics Examined

New 14 Jul 2016 Asked by what-i-cant-hear-you 31 Comments

Does BFM cost [R] or [R][R] to put into play with Sneak Attack? It is 2 "creature cards", after all. If only [R], does it also work with Quicksilver Amulet?

B.F.M. Is considered one creature card, but you have to have both halves in the same zone (hand, graveyard, library, battlefield, etc.)

B.F.M and Sneak Attack

New 14 Jul 2016 Asked by trappedinasnowcone-blog 20 Comments

Hi Mark! Un-rules question: How does B.F.M work with Sneak Attack, if at all?

As long as you gave both halves in your hand, you can Sneak Attack B.F.M.

Technical Card Possibilities

New 19 Jun 2016 Asked by dace67 26 Comments

Cascade, reanimation, and put directly onto the battlefield effects (Tooth & Nail, Sneak Attack, etc) make it technically possible to have a no CMC vanilla creature don't they?

There are many cards we can technically make that I’m doubtful we ever will.

Zendikar Resurgent Origin

New 08 Jan 2016 Asked by lenkense 20 Comments

RE: Zendikar Resurgent. ".. I don’t think it’s mine." Are you sure? Remember Sneak Attack?

Sneak Attack is a good example of a card I wasn’t sure I made but then discovered I did when I went back and looked at the homework I did when designing cards for Tempest. It’s design name was Blitzkreig.

Sneak Attack's Color

New 29 Aug 2014 Asked by kerrjf 24 Comments

Is Sneak Attack still in reds portion of the color pie? Seems like it would be green today, since haste was moved to green and green is the color that most wants to play creatures for a minimal mana investment.

Nope, still red. It’s the “one and done” quality of it.

Sneak Attack Reprint Odds

What the probability on the storm scale that Sneak Attack - my favourite card ever - gets reprinted in standard? Thanks for your blog!

Low. Sneak Attack is (not a developer) too good for Standard.

Sneak Attack Power Level

Did you forget Sneak Attack in your latest Tales from the Pit?

I don’t think sneak attack is at the power level of the other four. It is probably one of red’s strongest enchantments.

Sneak Attack's Future

New 29 Jun 2012 Asked by limitedwish 2 Comments

You created my favorite card ever (Sneak Attack) what's the chance we see that, or a card like it back any time soon?

The card has proven problematic powerwise because it lets players disregard mana cost. I’m not saying you’ll never see anything like it again, but we have to be extra careful with it.
