Green Recovery Limitation

New 23 Aug 2023 Asked by michel475193362 40 Comments

Why is it that green graveyard recovery effects for a while now have been relentlessly limited to permanent cards?Unrestricted graveyard recovery, as represented by 《Regrowth》 and 《Eternal Witness》, should have been Green's prerogative and traditional strength. The limitation to permanent cards is a pointless and unfair restriction on green.

Green still can get back any card, but not every regrowing card needs to get back everything.

Regrowth in Premier Sets

New 15 Aug 2022 Asked by cleverconvict 23 Comments

Do you think the original Regrowth could appear in a Premier Set these days? It was added to Modern and had zero impact, and Bala Ged Recovery at 2G suggests that the non-MDFC cost for the effect would be 1G. Is it still too good for Standard?

Not my area, but my gut is too strong for Standard.

Will do!

Giant Regrowth Printing Possibility

New 31 May 2022 Asked by mikecarlucci 31 Comments

Hi Mark. Giant Regrowth is an amazing card name. Can it be reused since it was just an alchemy card? Could it see a paper reprint without perpetually granting +3/+3 and the Alchemy version gets re-balanced? Thanks!

I don’t think we’re printing a paper copy of an alchemy card with the same name that works differently.

Misconceptions about Green's Abilities

New 24 Apr 2022 Asked by natew000 39 Comments

Considering that Regrowth is mechanically able to get card types that green usually doesn’t care about, it seems to me that without the flavor of the card Regrowth, the effect might be only allowed in multicolor that same way that Vindicate is a multicolor effect. I could imagine a world where both Regrowth and Demonic Tutor were only allowed in multicolor in modern Magic.

There seems to be this misunderstanding that green doesn’t get interact with various card types. Every color interacts with all the card types in their own way. One of those ways for green is through the graveyard. Green is the scavenging color.

Historicity of Regrowth Effects

New 24 Apr 2022 Asked by cicakemlelo 29 Comments

I had been wondering about the Demonic Tutor thing! And a related one: would regrowth effects have been green if it hadn't been for Regrowth itself?

Still green. Regrowth, as a concept, is very green.

Riveteers Charm Color Choices

New 04 Apr 2022 Asked by jambrose 39 Comments

Mark, the newly spoiled Riveteers Charm, has 3 modes, but in the green slot uses the exact same mode as the black slot on jund charm, essentially making it BRB vs BRG. Was there a reason for graveyard destruction for the green vs regrowth effect?

Multiple colors can do certain effects. There’s no requirement that every effect be limited to just one color (overall, we tend to not repeat effects within a set).

Dominaria and Spring Association

I think the plane I'd associate most with spring is Dominaria. It's all about regrowth and rebirth in the wake of tragedy and disaster. That's very spring.

Agreed.

Wrenn and Seven Card Rules

New 10 Aug 2021 Asked by fehtc 59 Comments

Hey Mark! The new Wrenn and Seven emblem grants no maximum hand size even though it's mono green and also lets you return permanents from your graveyard to your hand. Is this a bend AND a break? Since graveyard recursion is usually black and unlimited hand size is blue

Green is number one at returning any kind of card to your hand (and it goes all the way back to Regrowth in Alpha). Unlimited hand size is a bend, but this isn’t even the first time green got it.

Prospect of WU Regrowth

New 11 Jul 2021 Asked by quantext 39 Comments

If blue can recur instants/sorceries and white can recur all types of permanents, could there be a version of regrowth that costed WU?

Neither can recurse lands. As for recurring non-lands cards, it’s mechanically possible, but really needs the right flavor to feel right in white/blue.

Green's Core Weakness

New 29 May 2021 Asked by grandarbit3r 87 Comments

“It’s green pushing in an area where it can do all the component pieces” Isn’t this in the area of flash deathtouch 1/1 for 1G?

No. Green’s lack of spot creature kill with an empty board is a core weakness of the color. A regrowth effect with the added limitation that you have to cast it this turn is not undermining any weakness of green. Interesting trivia, in Urza’s Saga design, Mike Elliott and I both designed a Yawgmoth’s Will card concurrently. His was in black, mine was in green. Because Mike was the design lead, he put his version in the file. I believed then, and still believe now, he made a mistake. The card should have been green.

Inspiration in Media

New 14 Feb 2020 Asked by cursedereaper 41 Comments

Not 100% a mtg in media information because the game in the show was named different and a lot of details were beyond recognition but the show Craig of the Creek took a lot of inspiration from Mtg for a card game based episode. The plot was about a boy got older cards to the playground and someone took an ante card from him and extorted all other children. The show used the term regrowth and a card named Thornbolt which was a Bolt that used a six sided dice.

Thanks for sharing.

Green vs Black Regrowth

New 19 Dec 2019 Asked by usernamesarehard17 39 Comments

Hi Mark, I just wanted to ask why is it that green gets regrowth effects and black has raise dead? Ignoring flavour because you can justify anything with it, green is the creature centric colour so it just seems philosophy wise it should be limited to raise dead effects rather than regrowth. Is this a grandfathered choice?

That’s just a choice grandfathered in from Alpha.

Green's Power Analysis

New 04 Dec 2019 Asked by xenrac 31 Comments

Is the Pioneer banned list good evidence that Green, without color pie breaks, has been trending too strong in recent years? Because, anecdotal evidence, in my experience, the majority of green's dominance in commander comes from totally in color pie features such as card draw tied to land or creatures, land ramp, and universal regrowth effects. Sylvan Library may be a break and entirely too good, but it does not win the game by itself.

Card draw tied to land *is* a break. Green’s card draw needs to be tied to creatures.

Green Regrowth Ranking

New 02 Dec 2019 Asked by forestd3w 29 Comments

How good is green in regrowth effects? Because it feel tertiary.

Green is primary in Regrowth (that is putting any card from the graveyard to the hand). Other colors are primary in returning a certain card type. Black, for instance, is primary in regrowing creatures.

Green still has Regrowth-style cards in its color pie.

New Green Creature Abilities

New 28 Jul 2018 Asked by zanmor 31 Comments

I've noticed a few more green creature's lately like Vivien's Jaguar. I know green can get stuff back from the grave but I don't recall those abilities being on creatures like that. Is this a new thing for green or have I just missed it in the past?

Green can have Regrowth abilities on creatures. Usually one-shot.

Reanimation vs. Regrowth

New 13 Mar 2018 Asked by williamkillingly 57 Comments

Why is creature reanimation not allowed at common while creature regrowth is? Isn't creature reanimation just regrow plus a discount to cast it this turn?

If by discount, you mean the entire mana cost. : )

Equipment Tutoring

New 05 Sep 2017 Asked by sultaiascendancy-blog 36 Comments

Equipment matters, including equipment tutoring, is generally a red and/or white thing rather than blue. But now blue is allowed to do it because equipment tutoring is a subset of artifact tutoring, which blue can do. So if blue can tutor equipment now, does that mean that things like black tutoring specific card types (a subset of Demonic Tutor effects) and green recurring specific card types other than creatures/lands (a subset of Regrowth effects) are potential options in the right set?

Yes. More so green than black as black’s tutoring is being used less.

Green's Versatility Issue

New 04 Jun 2017 Asked by gophilipbowles 30 Comments

I don't feel that giving a colour something it can already do conditionally amounts to shoring up its weaknesses. I'd say it's a more general issue that green has too few weaknesses - it can kill any permanent type and too many forms of card advantage (draw, card selection, and regrowth, and 1st or 2nd best at all three). Beast Within does help in situations where a green deck has no creatures, but unless the green player's losing anyway that's rather a niche situation - not a major weakness.

If you give green enough answers that don’t require creatures, it can stop playing creatures. That is about as strong a circumventing a weakness as it comes.
