Rampage

Rampage Rating

Where is rampage on the scale?

I’ll call it an 8. It not working on the first creature to block it is a huge flaw. Not a lot of blocking happens with two creatures.

Planes Altered by Invasion

New 06 Apr 2024 Asked by obazervazi 58 Comments

I quite like how the heavily the planes have been affected and changed by the invasion. Eldraine had an extremely fairy tale solution to the invasion with extremely fairy tale complications, Selesnya of all guilds goes on a homicidal rampage, Thunder Junction is only populated at all thanks to the Omenpaths. Planes have been changing is ways totally appropriate to each plane, but are still quite different from what they once were.

I do think the change is there. Maybe it’s not as easy to see if you only play the cards and don’t read the stories.

Why should ramapage not say “beyond the first”?

It makes it relevant. Double blocking happens so rarely.

Valkyrie Token Confusion

New 05 May 2023 Asked by forestd3w 40 Comments

Hi, I bought a Valkyrie Harbinger for one of my deck, but I'm confused for the token. Valkyrie Harbinger creates a "4/4 white Angel creature token with flying and vigilance" and I can't find such a token in Kaldheim because it seem the angel token it has is a 4/4 white Angel Warrior with flying and vigilance. Is it a misprint? Oracle doesn't have the warrior subtype. If it is, can it be errated to make the token a warrior too?

Valkyrie Harbinger and Rampage of the Valkyries both create a 4/4 white Angel token that isn’t a Warrior, so it wasn’t a misprint.

Rampage Design Space

New 19 Apr 2023 Asked by jack-os-5d 34 Comments

I really like rampage as a mechanic. It seems to me that there's a lot of unexplored design space for it, so why hasn't it ever come back?

The choice to count all blockers past the first was a mistake.

What minor miracle would be needed to bring back Rampage?

Rampage has a bunch of strikes against it, the biggest being X-1 is never great built into a mechanic.

Unlikely, but not off the table.

Errata Comparison: Phyrexian vs Legendary

New 08 Jan 2022 Asked by j-waffles 41 Comments

People have been talking about mechanical errata recently in regards to potentially changing rampage, and have been talking about the mass Errata that phyrexians got in regards to legends with that errata, so now seems like the perfect time to ask my question:You’ve said in the past that things like the mass errata to make things phyrexian is ok as functional errata because they were always phyrexian in flavor. That being the case, would legendary errata be acceptable for proper nouns from ABUR, Arabian Nights, and Antiquities, since they are from before “legendary” was even a thing? Aladdin, Ali from Cairo, King Suleiman, Bazaar of Baghdad, and Library of Alexandria are all proper nouns. 4 of those 5 reference people/places from the real world, which we know from the portal sets do constitute the “legendary” super type. You could argue that Bazaar and Library see to much play in extended formats to get such major functional errata, but the “phyrexian” errata to glistener elf and blighted agent turned infect from a fringe deck to basically unplayable in modern. I know you guys avoid mechanical errata if ever possible because it confuses new players, but I’d be willing to bet new players would be more confused hearing “Aladdin is not considered a proper noun. Nor is Baghdad” than they would be hearing “that card from 25+ years ago has been changed” especially considering many other old cards from around that time have had serious errata to their printed text that changes some of them SEVERELY. I guess my question is just: why is the mass errata of phyrexian acceptable, when it is changing things that were always phyrexians in flavor to be so mechanically, but an errata of proper nouns to be legendary from ABUR, Arabian nights, and antiquities not acceptable, when it would be changing things that were always proper nouns in flavor to be so mechanically?

Making a creature Phyrexian does impact how other cards interact with it, but it doesn’t change how the card functions in a vacuum. Adding legendary to a card does, and pretty severely in any 4-of format.

Possibility of Errataing Rampage

New 07 Jan 2022 Asked by admiralsmash-blog 51 Comments

Re: Reclaiming rampage, to remove the Cascade-Tibalt interaction WOTC recently errataed Cascade so that it no longer matches printed reminder text. Given that Rampage cards are much less played than cascade cards, the precedent is definitely there for errataing rampage into counting each blocker including the first.

A fine point.

Rampage Mechanic Insights

New 07 Jan 2022 Asked by weebos 27 Comments

Unfortunately Teeka's Dragon (and Really Long Card Name Elemental) spell out Rampage in reminder text. Most cards with Rampage don't spell it out, though there are only 17 of them (including 3 un-cards).

Thanks for doing the research.

Consideration of 'New Rampage'

New 07 Jan 2022 Asked by everethe 44 Comments

Since we're talking about rampage vs "new rampage", what would the actual impact be of reclaiming the old word "rampage" and just making it count the first blocker? When Alchemy came out, I realized you could do something like this in paper but only if there hadn't been any paper cards with reminder text for an ability. Rampage is one of those mechanics. An update to the comp rules, a new printing of something and BAM! New rampage.

Hmmm.

New Rampage Storm Scale

Where is "new rampage" (where you count all blockers and not just the ones beyond the first. ) on the storm scale?

I’ll call that a 7.

Traditional Rampage Storm Scale

Where is Rampage on the storm scale?

I’ll call it a 9. We’re much more likely to do “new rampage” where you count all blockers and not just the ones beyond the first.

The Future of Rampage

New 05 Oct 2021 Asked by jimi099 29 Comments

Would you ever bring Rampage back to mtg it was an awesome tool in green and red decks

Rampage has a bunch of issues with it, the biggest being that it boosts for every blocker beyond the first. I’m skeptical rampage as is would return, but I could see a tweaked version return one day.

Legends Mechanic Evergreen

New 26 Aug 2021 Asked by krinstranger 34 Comments

It seems like every mechanic from Legends became almost-immediately evergreen. With multicolor and legendary it seems reasonable enough, but do you know why Enchant World and Rampage were suddenly treated like a core part of the game?

I honestly don’t know. The concept of evergreen was a bit fuzzy in the early days.

Absence of Rampage Mechanic

New 26 Aug 2021 Asked by ajanicomelately 32 Comments

Hey Mark! During the "Obsoleted Things" podcast (#862) you did not mention the old Rampage mechanic. Is Rampage still being done, perhaps under a different keyword that I'm not aware of? (Shout out for Gorilla Berserkers and Wolvering Pack!)

It just wasn’t on my list. We don’t do it any more and it was evergreen for a hot second, I guess, so I should have mentioned it.

I’d call it a 9. If fixed (+1/+1 for each blocker, not beyond the first) an 8.

Green's Standing in Card Draw

New 20 Apr 2021 Asked by yourstarshipisgay-deactivated20 73 Comments

When did become Green the new color that's best at card draw? I always thought that was Blue's thing, so curious when the switch was made. And if it's not, I'm confused? Between Trosti and Great Henge and Garruks's rampage, etc, it's created-based weaknesses isn't showing through in a creature-centric game

Blue’s supposed to be number one. It’s a topic at Council of Color meetings.

Angel Warrior Tokens Oversight

New 06 Mar 2021 Asked by crazychucky 50 Comments

I just noticed that four cards in Kaldheim create Angel Warrior tokens, which are printed among the set's tokens. But two cards (rare Valkyrie Harbinger and uncommon Rampage of the Valkyries) create otherwise identical Angel tokens that aren't Warriors. That seems really easily missed. Do you know if there's a reason it was done that way?

I think it was an oversight.
